Ogres take top two at the WCP GT!

original thread ↗

The Vancouver, B.C. based Warhammer club, the WCP, puts on a helluva GT each year, drawing top players from around Canada and the US. The competition is always exceptional, both in terms of opponent skill and attitude. It's certainly a step up on both counts from GW GTs!

My buddy and I both brought OK to the event, and we took home the top two spots! Mine takes more of a magic-bent, generally stalling a flank with magic while attacking the other with the tyrant. His is more smashmouth, with a BSB, warbanner rhinox, and 2x4 guts.

My build:
Tyrant with longstrider (love it!), wyrdstone, tenderiser, luck gnoblar
3 Butchers, one a caddy, one with bangstick, one with mantle
4 Bulls, 2 weapons (for looks, mostly), Lookout Standard
3 Guts, Musician
3 Guts, Musician

3 Yhetees
3 Belchers, Champ, Musician

Rhinox with HA, Fist
Gorger

Tyrant with tenderiser, kineater
BSB with wyrdstone, siegebreaker, lookout
Butcher caddy
3 Bulls, Champ, musician

Seconded!

Also, which one were you, #1 or 2? icon_wink  Nice lists both, see a couple interesting tweaks in there - 2x 3 belchers, DoW cav, low low magic in #2, yhets in all.

Congrats no matter!  Awesome work.

Thanks for the congrats! I came in at 208, my friend at 204!

I'll give a mini-report icon_smile

Game 1 was against a VC player. He took at gamble on turn 2 to try and kill 2 of my butchers, only to lose combat and lose his vamp  icon_eek He called the game and we reset to play another game for fun. This time, on turn 3 I was able to get my rhinox, bulls w/ tyrant and yhetees into his unit with vamp and rack up 25 CR! Needless to say, his big block of skellies and his vamp when poof.

Game 2 was a wood elf army with 2 large units of dryads, a large unit of dancers, an alter highborn with bow, medium magic, medium shooting, and a tree. I deployed heavily on one flank, opposite his dancers (I planned on killing them to get the VPs for the win while stalling the other flank with the dryads), and put my butchers on the other flank. Early on, the tyrant was able to drop the tree, but in doing so, he and his unit got shredded by glade guard! Luckily, my opponent seemed intent on letting me stall my weak flank while pushing my strong flank, so in the next few turns, I was able to destroy his glade guard and wardancers, with my rhinox overrunning into his dryads with branchwraith. After many rounds of grinding on dryads, he was able to get his alter highborn in on my rhinox, only to flub his attacks! The rhinox stomped the highborn, and I was able to get some belchers in to clean the rest. At this point, down by 1100 points, my opponent goaded me into charging his last unit of 12 dryads with a unit of 2 belchers with all 3 butchers in it. At +1 S, 5 S5 impact hits, 16 S5 attacks, and him having to allocate all his attacks, it seemed reasonable. I of course lost the combat and was run down icon_lol Luckily, the 700 points I surrendered wasn't enough to lose me the win icon_smile

Game 3 was another VC player, but this time he got me on the ropes quickly when I rolled up double 1s to dispel his vanhel's, twice! With a good portion of my army in route, my opponent took a gamble and locked down a bull unit with his vamp while he brought his black coach around, meanwhile raising units to keep me from charging his vamp on my turn. After the coach and vamp ran over the bulls, things were looking very bad. However, in turns 4 and 5 I was able to whittle down his black knights with butchers and then lock them down with the gorger. Meanwhile, the tyrant caught up with the coach and smashed it while the rest of my army regrouped. On turn 6, I was able to crash my rhinox and butchers into a skeleton unit while my tyrant finally caught his vamp (though the cursed book was nearby). Unfortunately, I failed to pop his skellies or his black knights, each unit having only a single model remaining (with banners, I lost ~450 points by causing one too few wounds in both combats). But the tyrant managed two wounds against the carstein vamp (who had the ring, and I hit him on 5s!), the vamp dealt only one wound in return, and died on combat res!

Game 4 was an empire player. Short version: I join the tyrant to the rhinox who then suffers bad temper, putting both in a bad position. Luckily, his knights fail their terror test, running off the board while his ogre mercenaries crash into the front of the tyrant. Unluckily, the ogres kill the tyrant before he can use his tenderiser, sending the rhinox packing, and the bad ogres into the midst of my line! At the same time, his great cannon splatters my entire bull unit, and suddenly my strong flank is crumbling. Thankfully, an ill-advised unbreakable spell on his general unit allowed me to combo-charge (without him fleeing) and then dispel his unbreakable spell during my magic phase! But then my three units all failed to catch his unit, denying me the points needed for a win. My first tie of the event!

Game 5 (the last game) was against an all beasts army cram-packed full of hammer units. With low LD and all hammers, it was my army's dream matchup (MSU ogres + 3 butchers!) Though his giant saw off my rhinox (fled 18"!), and his centigors/trolls both managed to go immune to psychology when I intended to hit them with braingobbler, I was able to panic a beast herd with bray shaman into impassible terrain, then combo-charge his general's herd with the tyrant (he hit first to rank them up) and guts in the flank. At the same time, I set up a combat with his trolls such that my tyrant would overrun into that fight, fighting a second time with his tenderiser on a multi-wound unit. The whole ordeal went as planned, and the beasts were in route. My opponent's only non-fleeing unit, a chariot, then crashed into my tyrant (who had 3 wounds left) and caused a mighty 6 wounds before saves! By this time, everyone knew I was playing for first place, so a crowd had formed. If I lost my tyrant, I'd lose the scenario bonus (which counts for battle points), and possibly the whole GT icon_smile Of 6 wounds, I saved 3, so I was still going to lose the tyrant. But I had my luck gnoblar, and in front of a big crowd, I tossed the die to determine the outcome of the event icon_smile It came up a '5', and there was much joy icon_smile
whats the US of a Rhinox?

Can a tyrant join a Rhinox? to be in the same unit?

the US of a bull rhinox is 6 - yes, tyrants can join them because they are cavalry units.

You should put up some pics of your army Humongous, it was one of my faves there.  Like the use of rackham figs too!
