>300 point ogre warband? is an effective one possible?

original thread ↗

Hey guys, I got a problem, few of my buddies and I are starting out in warhammer fantasy (I've been playing 40k but this is just a lot better) i decided to join the ogres and I noticed they don't look too good in war bands but I'm willing to try. Personally i wanted to buy a battalion and work up from their but unfortunately to many of my friends are bums and don't have any cash to buy more than a 300 point starting army. I've been around a few forums and this by far looks like the best ogre forum i can encounter if any one has any tips or strategies that could be useful it will be much appreciated. My warband list right now is 2bulls, 2bulls, 2iron guts, 15 gnoblars, 15gnoblars. works out to 296 points. Thanks in advanced for the help guys!
oh yeah my main enemies will be Dwarfs, Night elves, and wood elves
Have you got a Crusher or a Gutlord in there to act as your general?

i thought you can just declare one to be a general. I didn't think you needed to upgrade one (that would mean i need a unit of 3)
:(
You need a non-butcher character, a champion, or a maneater to lead it.
and this leads to a big problem for ogres in warband scenarios!  At 500 points we can get several very realistic and useful forces going, but at less points its just a pain!

you, you'll need 1 unit of 3 in order to get the gutlord/crusher you need for a general.  At 300 points, a maneater might just be possible, but still risky.

try

maneater (+weapon upgrade+ha)
2 bulls
2 ironguts
7 trappers

or

3 bulls+crusher
2 bulls+additional hand weapons
2 ironguts

of these 2 lists I prefer the first.  However, I strongly recommend that your mates scrape themselves up to 500 points (not that expensive to do - a lot can be achieved with upgrades to a hero!)

at 500 points we have a lot more options - my favourite (and still undefeated) version being:

1 rhinox rider (thunderlord, ha, if)
1 butcher
2 bulls + ironfists
3 bulls

good times.....

You can use a  butcher as a general in  Warbands, I suggest them against dwarves and Lizards

woo!
I'd suggest the Maneater as your general. Think about it- he's WS4, S5, T4, with 3 wounds and four attacks- that's more than enough in a game this size, especially when you consider that those stats are very comparable to your opponents generals (remember- they're weak thinlings! :P). A Maneater is more than a match for other races captains (in warbands at least) and also gives you more points for troops.

Nice lists Wildcard, they're really good!
important note:

you CANNOT use a butcher as general in a warband - you CAN in a border patrol force :)

I could swear I read on the one of the GW sites that you could use the butcher  as the army general in games of =/< 500pt matches using  the Warbands rules...

You can't have a hunter as your general either
