Real men wear yellow - Cygnar army

original thread ↗

...or so I hope. I've had a forced break in the harley army for a couple fod ays so I thought I'd take the time to knock out my warmachine battlegroup so I can finally get a game in. Full credit for this goes to Mentag the Marauder who' hordes thread was a joy to follow. I'm nowhere nearthe painter Mentag is but I hope to do something worth looking at.

Day 1
Assembly. these models are now the oldest Privateer press put out, and it's starting to show a little. Some poor planning in the casting stages means copious amounts of pinning were required even for the stock assembly bits. I did spend a good few hours converting them here and there though.

Warjacks:
The charger jack didn't get too much done to it besides having its legs cut and repositioned and it' head pinned into a differant direction. the majority of the conversion work came on the lancer. the legs head, shield and arm have all been repostioned. In additon to this, I've scupted a hand from scratch resting on the shield. It needs filing and repairing in some places but it will have to wait until it's cured tomorrow. Additionally, my box was missing one arc node component for the lancer's head so I sculpted a more streamlined one in it's place. The ironclad was another case of widening the legs and dramtically repositioning the head to more closely resemble the box art.

Coleman Stryker
I ummed and arred over a hundred differant conversions for stryker but figured since this was my first warcaster, I'd keep it nice and simple. I wantd to make him closer to the box art again, but since this would mean resculpting half of his body, I settled for just rotating the sword round to better show his head and have more of a ready stance.

Not much more to say today. Tomorrow I'll finish the lancer and begin the painting. At the moment I'm torn between a half and half blue and white colour scheme or a radically differant, imperial fist style yellow. Either way I'm planning to grime the models up a bit (not something I usually do) so hopefully I'll discover some new and interesting techniques. Any input on the colours is apreciated.

Thanks
Corai

Great to see this starting. The conversions are all natural, and I know that PP minis take a huge amount of pinning. But once it's done, you can get straight to painting.

Blue/White sounds okay, but yellow would ROCK. For weathered yellow, I suggest you check this out: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=84716&hl=

His recipe is, over white, Vallejo Deep Yellow, highlight adding white, painted in Yellow Ink, and crevices shaded with a mix of yellow/brown ink.

Wow... I'm looking forward to seeing this develop... will you be able to stay in schedule... only time will tell.

I am not too familiar with PriveteerPress miniatures, and Warmachine/Hordes games, but I like the steam punky look they have, and will keep posted on this project.

BTW, Corai, you really have lots of projects going on at the same time: eldar harlequins, the chaos army, this... and all very big and ambitious...

keep it up.

Yeah, I'm starting to realise that too! I figure if I keep switching between painting and modelling projects I'll eventualy get everything done but not get bored. that's the plan anyway! Update coming soon

Nice looking battle group there mate the conversions make it unique and are well done. I too have lots of projects on the go it helps to keep the interest up to be able to switch about.
Day 2
I've spent so long painting this evening that I haven't really got time to update! I've got a step by step of how I did everything that I'll upload tomorrow but for the time being here's the first jack with the metals done (or so I thought) and the basecoat of the primary colour down:

As it turns out, the metals looked a lot better against black. Against the yellow I think they're too bright so will hit them with another wash of tamiya smoke tomrrow to grime them up even more. The basecoat is iyanden darksun and will be worked up through golden yellow to badmoon yellow. The black areas will be where the secondary colours are going on. I haven't decided yet whether this will be black or dark blue. any sugestions?

thanks
Corai
Ashamed I didn't think of it before, I've renamed my Pet Gnoblar's Hannibal, Face, B.A., Murdock and Sam & Al Quincy, Doctor Sloan and Horatio
I like the metals...some more smoke or just Black ink could help, though. I'd wait on it and see how it looks when the yellow's done.

If you're doing it all over black, you could try my yellow recipe (as seen on the Stirland Greatsword's heraldry). Vomit brown (similar to Iyanden Darksun), Golden Yellow, 50/50 GY/Sunburst yellow, sunburst, 50/50 sunburst/bad moon, bad moon, bad moon + tad of white.

For a secondary color, I'd definitely go with Blue. Maybe not a REALLY bright blue, though. Maybe some white stripes, chevron-style?

like the yellow, so far, its different to the cyngar blue and thats good, because i hate that blue,

you and mentag have inspired me to collect a warmachine/hordes warband,id been thinking about it for a while now but id doubt id ever get to play with them as the shop that sold them/had boards and other people to play against in southampton closed down over christmas due to going bust, shame because it was where we had our unofficial GW club too. now all we got is the really really busy games night in the store...sucks. especially since if i did start warmachine id couldnt play ith them there.... that and i just got my friend out side of this forum and new member to the forum Pie Master into WHFB and i doubt he would be too happy about intorucing him into a completely new game system/rules set so soon afterwards, especially as he has no real gaming experience of fantasy as yet.

at the moment im stuck between legion of everblight and protectorate of menoth,if i ever finally set my hear on this game, not like i can do any trail games now the stockit shut down.... id like to read up on the backgrounds more but wikipedia and the privateer press websites are rubbish for it really...

inspirational work and i see what you mean about the datedness of some of the models especially the warjacks for each of the factions now ive spent the past day trawling the privateer press site and looking at the minis.

hope you can manage to get them all done in ten days and still do your chaos and harlequins and ogres and whatever else you have waiting in the wings....though i doube youll work on any of them while this projects on....

heres a challenge, see if you can beats mentags 8 days...!

syc
I totally bet that I can beat 8 days icon_biggrin

i could do it in 2 but the pictures of it all would make you go blind with their rubbishness
I'm really having second thoughts about the yellow having seen it in daylight. I know its only the basecoat but I'm realy considering changing my ind before it's too late and switching to blue adn white quartered!

Hey I missed the start of the topic... lot happens when you don't visit for a day. The yellow looks fine, quite a bold colour though. Once it gets 'grimed' or maybe battleworn it will come together.
I am glad I inspired this thread. I really hope you can hit the time limit. You get a real sense of acomplishment.

okay, enough dallying around like an indescisive gtnoblar. I've decided to paint like I've got a pair (you see what I did there icon_wink) and finish the yelow jack. I delibveratly picked this one to paint first as its the model least likely to be fielded in larger games. If it all goes horribly wrong i can scrap it and go for the safer scheme

Thanks

Good! You can always field it with a different caster in that colour. With my Warmachine I painted a 'Jack to fit with the High Reclaimer. It is black the rest are white but it still fits in.

All the models look great as usual. Also, in War Machine, what roles do infantry play, as I assume the core of an army is the jacks?
2 Pet Gnoblars! I dub them Itchy and Scratchy, for reasons that are too private to divulge.
not quite, it depends on who your warcaster is realy. Quite a few of them are very troop-centric and can work best with a lot of elite infantry and few (if any) jacks. I have to admit, I got into the game for the giant, steam powered killer-robots and tend to play jack heavy lists (even when using caine, a caster not renowned for his ability to assist his jacks). Really, infantry can fill a number of rolls. For many factions they're the only real option if you want to have any kind of effective shooting (not so for cygnar, are jacks are bristling with guns icon_wink).  Somemcombos and special rules (a lot of cyrx and menoth ones for example) rely on having a lot of infantry at your disposal.

Lovely stuff! You are painting very fast with impressive results. I will have to get some photographs but I am awaiting the mysterious orange orb to make one of it's rare appearances...

The sword knights are very nice. The fact that you used a little less yellow on them works quite well. The shields are especially nice. The second Centurion is nicer than the first. The band of blue over the head is better visually. Have you much more to do?

There does seem to be quite a few Privateer Press models on the forums lately. Are these games/miniatures proving popular in the UK? Here in Dublin the community is starting to grow but it is a slow thing. We once again have an independent retailer that will hold some tournaments so hopefully he will do so for Privateer Press and not just GW games.

Ghworg in Hordes, the sister game, Beasts are more central to the army as they provide power to the 'caster. In Warmachine the 'caster generates the power himself and provides this to the 'jacks. It is an interestin situation because as 'Jacks get killed the 'caster gets more powerful but as beasts get killed the Warlock looses power! The two games can be played against each other and work from the exact same rules set. Infantry and list construction work completely differently though!

wow, just had a great 1000 point game against Stronghold member Stonehorse. I'll post some mroe detaios tomorrow but it was a big game we didn't get to finish (about the equivolent of  3-4k fantasy game). I had a great time (and won quite convincingly to boot). The gun mages themselves gunned down a dire troll mauler, a troll axer and half a unit of trollkin kriel warriors. Needless to say they just jumped right tothe front of the painting crew icon_biggrin

The new stuff is lookin great Corai!  I am not a fan of the new cent pose as much as I am of your other conversions but the painting on him is great.  I absolutely love the layering on the THead, the surfing maniac almost looks like he is glowing!  Keep up the good work.  Which two casters did you use in your 1000 point game?  I gotta say, Cygnar versus trolls isn't exactly fair as you have some serious range on them icon_smile  Then again, they just seem to never die!
This thread is worthless without pictures
I used Darius and Caine, and aside from a handful of models, really had little to no shooting! IIRC My list was long the lines of:

Epic Caine
Darius
-Centurion
-Centurion
-Thunderhead
Journeyman Warcaster
-Lancer
Journeyman Warcaster
-Hunter
6 Sword Knights
6 Arcane Tempest Gun Mages
Alten Ashley
Gun Mage Captain Adept

okay, looking back at it there was a fair bit of shooting, I guess I just missed the maxed out units of trenchers and long gunners who didn't come along!

thanks
corai

right, photo update to come later today or tomorrow but I've had to make a hard decision to cap my yellow painting somewhere. I'm sliding towards being overwhelmed with Cygnar minis and there are other projects out there too (finish the Change Eaters ofr Grand Tournament, bring my harlequins up to 3000 points for apocalypse - can you say two titans icon_wink- and paint a small hordes army). With htis in mind I've decided to only paint the units/jacks/solos/casters that I'm actually likely to use in the near future. then if I want to use any of my other units after that I cancome back to them then. So my to paint list now looks like:
Warcasters:
-Lt Caine
-Major Markus 'Siege' Brisbaine

Warjacks
-Defender Heavy wArjack

Units
-4 Long gunners
-Long Gunner Unit Attachment
-Trencher Unit Attachment
-Trencher Grenade Porter
-Arcane Tempest Gun Mages
-2 Sword knights

Solos
-Captain Maxwell Finn
-Ogrun Bokur
-Journeyman Warcaster
-Rhupert Carvolo
-Gun Mage Captain Adept

Now lets see how quickly I an start digging through this list

Thanks
corai
Ashamed I didn't think of it before, I've renamed my Pet Gnoblar's Hannibal, Face, B.A., Murdock and Sam & Al Quincy, Doctor Sloan and Horatio
and here's the promised photo update. this week I got my a4rcane tempest gun mages painted:

I also painted up the gun mage captain adept solo to accompany them:

And when I had these guys done I decided to cap off the week of painting gun mages by painting my conversion of Lt Caine. You've already seen the epic version of caine elarier on in the blog, but I wanted to be able to field his regular version as well. Epic warcasters are more powerful/differant versions of existing warcaster (in this case Lt. Caine) that represent a change in the warcasters life (promotion to captain etc) and can only be used in larger games. As I wanted to be able to play my favourite warcaster in games under 750 points I knew I'd need to paint regular caine at some point. I really didn't like the model though so after some heavy conversion I modeified him to mimic one of the stacnes of the Grammaton Cleric's Gun Kata from the movie equilibrium:

and finally, becase everyone loves group shots, here's all the gun mages together:

thanks
Corai

These are looking great. You really have a unified and distinctive force. I guess it gets a lot of attention at tournaments? Have you played many games yet? I have played quite a lot of Warmachine (Menoth) though I am lacking game experience with Hordes. When will your new force arrive here?
