My Empire Army : The 18th Reikland Regiment

original thread ↗

Hi guys,

In this gnoblog I intend to let you follow the birth of my Empire army.
I picture them very much like a german landsknecht fighting force (which GW based the Empire on), and want to model a normal Reikland regiment.
Most models will be state troops, supported by independent knightly orders and artillery off all kinds.
The more irregular troops will play a secondary role.

So, without further ado I present to you the commander of the 1st Fahnlein of the 18th Regiment of the Reikland, Kapitän-Ritter Otto von Bärwald (Empire Captain)

and some of his troops :

the 1st Rotte Spiessträger (spearmen) under the command of Rottmeister Hans Pedersen (spearman sergeant)

Wow, thats a really great start! I like your color scheme. Thats going to be a really nice army.

lovely models. the use of the marauder head adds real dramatism to it

i love that banner, and the ice blue reall does work well, although id like to see red in place of the yellow, making the units a tiny bit more vibrant. they just seem a little...errm not drab. muted. the colours are muted. muted would be the word. very pastel. but they look great.
like that captain..
Some fire support :

This is a beautiful army. I look forward to more!

My first reaction was "Wow, this is a great army!" I like the homestyle Hellstorm, and the bases on all your artillery add a good touch.

ay nice one!
Like the models, very vibrant and clean. A great start to your armies life.

Also could you enlighen me on how you created the Helstrom, I think I prefer yours to the actual model (not to mention it's a damn sight cheaper! icon_razz)

Peace out

Touchdown!
Components for the Hellblaster : end piece of mortar, 2 wheels from direct, 2 mortar support pieces (which now hold the fuses), a balsa wood frame, several h-beams (mine are brass, but plastic would be better icon_wink ), a steering wheel from a model ship for the elevation mechanism, some plasticard as a base for the H beams and for the sides. L-profiles to smoothen the edges, a lever from a Dwarf cannon for the locking mechanism, tubing and grenade heads (from WWII artillery model) for the rockets.
The crew you'll recognize and the brazier is from bretonnian archers.....
I am not entirely sure if it was cheaper making this than buying one... but it sure was a lot more fun.......
A really nice work on the uniforms, I really likes the white, ne'er thought could be used t' good effect, but hell, it does work very nicely fer yer Reikland troops!

That Helstorm is some fine conversion and no mistake, makes me almost like the whole concept of it. Actually, yer Helstorm battery looks more in line with the techlevel of the empire than the plastic set, so it be even better in me eyes.

more things that go Boom (without hur hur hur.... )

But the hurhurhur be ye beste parte of it and no mistake. What be wrong with a good deal of bloodlust and gloating, asks I?

Hi,

Very nice army you have there, warhammerlord_soth. Dynamic and vibrant colors (very empire-like). I also like the bases for the warmachines.

How long does it take to paint a model? It looks like you often use washes?

BigD

1) How long does it take to paint a model?
2)It looks like you often use washes?
BigD

1)Too long, according to my wife... Somewhat more than a week to paint these... between work, kids and keeping the wife happy.. Not to mention fighting battles...

2)Yes, I like the uneven, random look it creates for some things. I aim to paint "realistically" as opposed to "too beautiful to be coming from this planet", which is what the real good painters achieve. Also, I don't paint figures, I paint armies. Cutting corners is what keeps you going... I must say I admire those that can paint to high level, but I run out of patience imitating that....
Awesome models mate. The rate at which people churn stuff out on this site puts me to shame.
2 Pet Gnoblars! I dub them Itchy and Scratchy, for reasons that are too private to divulge.
Could not wait till banner/trumpet were painted...
This is my unit of Reiksguard Knights, which I can field as 2 units of 5, 1 unit of 10 with full command, or anything in between....
Long live the power of magnetism... icon_biggrin

loving the reiksguard. They need basing to make them have that finished look but the colours work great together

thanks

Another exemplary unit.

Finished Reiksguard. (I think)

Individual shots of Preceptor and of SB and Mu with alternate lance arms.
A warrior priest I'm working on... needs some detailing with extra bitz and such...

The army is well painted and looks cool, but the flock all over the bases makes it look somewhat unprofesional in my eyes, but I suggest you keep it as you want.

The Warrior Priest is supreme though. Where's the head from? A bret?

Thanks

Yes, the head comes from the brettonian m@a command sprue.

the rest is from 6th ed state troops and some green stuff.

Started on a unit of swordsmen. Aiming for 30, 10 done..

Nice!

Looks of very nice units there, its almost the opposite of my empire which is the dark red and black Corraburg scheme.
I can't say enough about this army. Every unit is very impressive, love your painting style keep up the wonderful work . Look forward to seeing your next unit.

Cheers

I love the leader!! He looks cool! You are a brilliant painter.
finished warrior priest

Looking good!

Very nice looking army mate.. you need to do an updated Army view of them I think.. just to show how well these colors go together over an entire army..

Very cool indeed..

Time for an update :

Block of 30 swordsmen with 9 man Halberdier detachment and 5 men archer detachment.

I love the banner, a little napoleonic for my tastes but still lovely!

I am tempted by an Empire army myself now...

Love the whole army Soth! Great color scheme and very nice freehand work on the banners!  Shouldn't that last pic be a unit of swordsmen though and not spears icon_wink ?
Awesome units. I love the colour scheme. Is the banner freehand? 'Cos if it is, that is very impressive.

@msherman31781 : they are, aren't they ? (love the modify option..)

@Ghworg, it's freehand, yes, and thank you...
Finished a mortar :

Brilliant stuff the mortar crew on there large base looks really good, specially with the removeable crew for keeping track of wounds,
Great idea and very well exercuted.

Blu Blu.
I Fought the MAW but the MAW Won.
Really impressive work.  As a former Empire player, I had a hard time deciding how to merge the new miniatures and old miniatures.  You've done a splendid job, creating a dynamic and characterful army with impressive conversions and a splendid scheme.  A balanced Empire army, full of state troops, warmachines and cavalry, is one of the most impressive sights on any Warhammer battlefield.  Well done!
There is no escape from Chaos.  It marks us all.
The Mortar is classic! I really like the mini diorama. It is the best part of the army so far!

Thanks for the comments guys.

Now, on to some serious artillery. I wanted to make enough mortars for the 6 pie plate of Doom army, but one thing has been holding me back : I'd rarely use these models, since, really, I prefer cannons over mortars.
I looked into the Workshop article on making the barrels interchangeable, but disliked the look of the mortat barrel on the long beams...
12 magnets later, I had the solution. I liked it so much, I made two (although that also had another reason, but I'll tell you about that in due time..)

Oh, and since this is a MORtar that can be changed into a cannON, guess what I called it ?

Indeed.... a MORON...  :engel:

Oh, and about the bases : I cut them from foamcore, cut out the holes for the crews bases and the guns supports, then I glue 1mm cardboard underneath.

Second Helstorm

I know, I've shown these in another thread, bur for completeness' sake
your models are really awesome! have you been awarded with a petgnoblar for this army?
Sweet jesus....I never saw this blog before today...I am overwhelmed by all the empire goodness in here!  Brings a tear to my old Elector Count eye I tell you...

Someone commented on your basing earlier, I happen to love the all round basing myself, helps blend the models into the gaming mat more rather than strange black or green edging.

And I now fully understand why your maneaters are wearing clean crisp white linen!

And I love how the red skull knights and wizards break up the 'whiteness' of the army look.  Contrast is a beautiful thing and really gives special units and models their place in the sun as it were, ignore BigD. ;)

And ooo yeah the scratch built hellstorm, cool.  And the KF on dragon!  freaking a!

Great stuff.
awesome.
atm im going around thinking of what army to do yet, and empire have been in my mind, but but kinda didnt like the idea because it would look so borring.
but then i see this blog and wow, your empire really inspired me.
