The Brassbelly Tribe - Updated 07/07/2008 - Rhinoxen!

Greetings fellow connoisseurs!

This is to be the story of the Ironjaw Brassbelly Tribe, a band of Mercenaries currently lurking around the Grey Mountains.

Currently assisting the Dwarven Lord Loki Hammerheim in the battle for Garaj Gorge (more on this later), the Ironjaws have gotten a taste for Dwarven Ale and Greenskin Flesh - though will of course be aiding our allies in the Nemesis Crown campaign.

Been collecting for a while, though mostly it's what I've been able to scrounge up from sales and offers, plus a Battalion box - currently I have the following for my army core:

Tyrant Orgath Dragoneater (who once clubbed to death and ate a dragon - hence the name)
- Heavy Armour
- Ironfist
- Hungry Gauntlet (don't have the book on me atm so can't remember the name - the magic gauntlet with +1 to armour that eats magic items)
- In larger battles I'll also fork out for a magical weapon, some Gnoblars and maybe a Warpstone Charm

This guy has been built - requires some greenstuffing and rebasing, and then painting. Unfortunately I don't have access to a camera at the moment, so pics will have to wait. I converted him a Dragon Skull helm from the Orc bits from the Plastic Giant - the only bit of the Dragon he didn't eat, so he could wear it as a hat and be generally intimidating. Am going to take him off the current base he's on and put together a more decorative one with more height to it - currently has a little trouble ranking up.

4 Ironguts - Orgath's Smashers.
I have modified these guys with extra heavy armour (mostly from scavenged shields and gutplates) - again, need greenstuffing. Usually they'll accompany the boss.

6 Bulls (no name yet)
Slightly modified - have given them each a shoulder pad (except the champion who gets two) and backplates, in case I want to give them Light Armour. Also have Ironfists. One will get split off into my second unit of Bulls.

4 Leadbelchers
Not modified them yet, but will probably add shoulder pads like the above guys. I'll end up splitting them into smaller units no doubt.

Spot 'the Cyclops' - Slavegiant
Added a lot of bitz to the plastic giant to make this guy - he's had an eye put out and an iron plate nailed over it, a giant steel spike riveted to his forehead and is clad in assorted balls & chains and heavy weights. He's not treated well. Again, needs the greenstuff work.

Unassembled pile includes 5 Bulls, 4 Leadbelchers, and 20-odd Gnoblars (not counting the extras on the Ogre Sprues). One of the Bulls will probably be converted into a Butcher.

In terms of look of the army, I will be adding additional armour plates to most of them - they fight alongside Dwarves against Orcs a lot, so they scavenge a lot of Orcy armour plates, and hammer them into shape. In particular, unit champions will sport Orc-style Iron Gobs.

I hope to scrounge up a camera soon!

Looking forward to seeing more! I considered a Dwarf allegiance as well, I'd like to see where you're taking everything!

You may want to consider the Ironskin army list too. All the armor, plus Leadbelchers as Core would really work well since you're allied with Dwarfs.

Apologies - didn't mean to step on any toes with the Tribe name. I'm not drastically attached to it (only came up with it tonight when I realized I hadn't named my tribe yet) - I don't mind changing it a bit if you want (Steeljaw or something - I'll check taken names better this time!)

I'll certainly look into the Ironskin list, sounds like a blast - will have to see if any of the local gamers are up for trying it out.

Orgath, no need to apologize! Its a free world and free forum, and hey, it just proves to us both that its a cool name! You don't need to change a thing as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah I considered an Ironskin list too. The only thing holding me back was wanting (and not having) a bunch of Rhinox Riders. Not that it's necessary, I just wanted it that way, LOL. I may do it anyway...still thinking on that.

Yup, I was one of the people doing roleplaying games upstairs, popped downstairs around half past 8 since some of my group didn't show up. I hope to be taking part in the club Nemesis Crown stuff on Sundays (probably not this weekend though, have other plans)

The theme sounds really interesting and I look forward to seeing pics. Perhaps u should give ur Tyrant Daemon-Killer Scars to represent the terror inspired by the Dragon skull.

Well, no more progress on the army itself to report, however I did manage to get in a couple of battles today (ended up going to the games club after all)

I took a 500pt list of 4 Ironguts with Banner, 4 Bulls, and a Bruiser with Heavy Armour and Ironfist (essentially first draft of the small campaign list)

First game was against Dwarves - he had a block of Quarrellers and some Clansmen with Great Weapons, plus a Thane with great weapon.

The Ironguts and Bruiser smashed into his clansmen (lost one to crossbows first though), took down a bunch but sadly the Dwarves didn't break - setting me up for a counter charge by the Quarrellers. The combat ground on for a few turns, the Clansmen took heavy losses but eventually I was overwhelmed and my last guy broke and ran. Sadly, the Bulls spent pretty much the entire game strung out on the flank and bogged down in terrain (the Dwarves pretty much all deployed in one corner of the board)

Second game vs Goblins - opponent had some Wolf Riders (with Big Boss), Spider Riders, Arrer boyz and a level one shaman.

I spent the first turn closing with the enemy - Ironguts down the left flank, Bulls in the middle (with the Bruiser). Goblins pretty much just shuffled around a bit. Next turn, I advances the Ironguts a bit, wheeled the Bulls to stop them being outflanked, and sent the Bruiser off alone to deal with the Shaman.

Anyway, in the Goblin turn, the Wolfriders charge the Bulls, the Spider Riders try to charge my Bruiser but fail their Fear test, so onto combat (Shaman's Gaze of Gork fizzled). Between the wolves and goblins, one Bull gets torn down. Striking back, I take out 4 of the Wolfriders, but they still outnumber me and have a standard, so I lose by one. The first of my terrible break tests happen here, the bulls break and flee, then get run down.

My turn - Bruiser declares a charge versus the Shaman, who runs away like the coward he is. The Ironguts charge the Spider Riders, who fail their fear test but stay put since they outnumber me. The Ironguts then go on to miss with pretty much all of their attacks, and the Spider Riders win combat. Again, I fail the break test and get run down.

Anyway, the rest of the game is spent with the Spiders and Wolves chasing the Bruiser around, he takes a few out but ultimately fails his break test and is run down.

Lessons Learned:

1. I need a lot more practice with Ogres

2. I suck at break tests.

3. Me Grimlock need new strategy.

4. I need to get my Gnoblars assembled so I can use them in small games!

In other news, the summer campaign at the club is starting next week - it's a map based campaign with territories and stuff - I wound up with my starting territories being 3 Villages, a Field and 2 Swamps, which isn't too bad. I got permission from the co-ordinator to use the Ironskin list for my guys.

Starting lists for the campaign have to be 500 points, have a single hero to lead it (Bruiser for me...), no Magic Items or Spellcasters, and only Core troops (Special and Rare can be recruited later using gold accrued from territories).

Since I'm using the Ironskins list, am thinking of the mandatory unit of Bulls and a couple of minimum size Leadbelchers (BOOM! Hur Hur) - with my territories, I can easily expand to bring back the Ironguts and some Gnoblars in the first couple of campaign turns.

OK, a bit of progress - I tidied up the minis a bit, getting rid of Mould lines etc, and got some greenstuffing done. Mostly gap filling, but I also added some straps for the shoulder pads on my Bulls and a bit of detail on my Tyrant, who is now off his base ready for a better one. I have also removed the hammer in his right hand - will pin it later, leaving it removable for easier storage and transport.

I also have a few pictures now - nothing too great so far (took me a while before I figured out the flash and some of them are a bit blurry - will take better ones once I start painting)

Showing off the armoured shoulders and back shield of my Irongut Champion - may add some greenstuff straps and chains to it, although maybe they just nailed the plates into their skin. Shoulders made from spare Gutplates with spikes from the Orc regiment.


Spot. my 'Cyclops' - not a great shot, but just about shows off the horn nailed to his skull, and the scarred over left eye. Also shows his 'driver'. I haven't greenstuffed this guy yet, am going to build up a metal plate over the scarred eye and add some more wounds etc.

I still need to add Iron Gobs to my unit leaders - am trying to work out a way which will look good with the 'beardy' Bull. The Ironguts champ will probably have it added to his helmet, and the Leadbelchers most likely wont have champions.

I have this week off work, so I should get some painting progress done on my initial forces for the weekend campaign (although I will spend a lot of the time packing as I move house at the weekend).

wow, great looking conversions. I love the dragon skull helmet, and the use of extra gutplates as shoulder guards is fantastic

Everything looks great, I too love the gutplates as shoulder pads, ever since I did one of my Ogres like that I loved how it looked!

Conversions are coming along very nicely.  Can't wait to see some of the final builds.

Been working on painting the Bulls today - settled on a skin tone I liked (Never really likes GW's grey-green colour skin, so am going with a more traditional 'big human' look) - GW's Foundation Paint 'Tallarn Flesh' as the base, highlighted up to P3 'Midlund Flesh'

Tried to take some pictures, but the lighting's not too good at the moment (very overcast) and the shots came out blurry and not accurate colour wise - will try again when the weather's a bit nicer outside.

Also, am thinking of changing the name of the Tribe. As was noted earlier, Ironjaw is very similar to the already existing Iron Maw tribe - I'm also having trouble marking this on the minis, I experimented with Orky Iron Gobs but ended up looking a bit silly.

As I intend on using P3's 'Brass Balls' colour for metal details anyway, I thought of the 'Brassbelly Tribe' - they'd have heavy brass gutplates, having learnt a bit about smelting from regular contact with the Dwarves in Garaj Gorge.

Should get the Bulls mostly done today, and will finish off the details and hopefully get some pics tomorrow.

The fleshtone's looking pretty good. I think it could possibley benefit from some slightly darker areas in some of the deepest crevices and some definition given ot the nipples. Brass Belly sounds pretty cool for a tribe name, looking forward to seeing these finished

Almost finished the unit now - just a few more details and tidying up to do. I accentuated the nipples as per Corai's suggestion - bit of shading then a Dwarf Flesh highlight - also highlighted the lips in Dwarf Flesh to pinken them up a bit.

Took a few more pics, most turned out quite bad - I need to get hold of a tripod or something!


It's hard to tell from the pic, but the hair is actually dark brown (black highlighted to Scorched Brown)


Unit standard - was aiming for a dirty red look, as if it's a scrap of cloth been dragged through a bunch of muddy fields and barely washed. I need to add an icon (still deciding on what) and to paint the Gnoblar's chicken leg.


'Lucky', the Bellower's pet Gnoblar in sack. Called that because he's lucky he hasn't been eaten yet.

They're really coming along. the standard looks particularly good. You might want to consider trying a red/chestnut/flesh wash to tie the highlights together

Uve done a great job on these guys.

Wow, it's been a long time since I last updated (2 months to the day!) and I haven't gotten a whole lot done (though to be fair, I have moved house since then)

Anyway, managed to snap a few pics! I am painting more of these guys for the 'Tale of Fantasy Painters' on Warseer (in case you hadn't guessed I'm Zark the Damned over there)

I've mostly ben assembling stuff for my campaign army at my gaming club on Sundays, but have managed to base up my Bulls and paint my Ironguts - pics attached.

I also received my new toys from Forgeworld! 6 Bull Rhinox Riders With the spare bits from the Leadbelchers and Ironguts I can easily make 12 Ogres out of the spare sprues.

New Toys! Since this pic (taken a while ago but I only just got the lead for the camera) I have cleaned them all up, stuck em to bases and assembled three of them fully (bar a bit of tidying up)


The based up Bulls - I think this is a better shot than the last one. Still not decided on a symbol for my banners yet though...


The Ironguts - so far in battles these guys have served quite well as a bodyguard for my general - they hardly ever run away screaming like little girls!


Ironguts from the back - they're so dead 'ard they've nailed shields onto their spine for extra armour - again, symbols to add when I work out what I want it to be.


My Battle Standard Bearer in progress - the banner is made from an old weekrider Bus Pass, 'cause it is laminated and fairly stiff, and I didn't have the patience to go and get better materials


BSB from the back - cloak is made from a plastic banner, from the generic command set for goblins, skaven and skelletons (iirc) - am quite happy with this!

Also in the pipeline, I have some Maneater conversions, a Butcher, the rest of the Rhinoxen, and a Truthsayer. Hopefully I'll keep this updated more often from now on.

Gee - I hope you don't mind, but that back shot of your BSB has just answered what I need to make my Tyrant pop. A cape and shoulder plates.

And Jimmy, the Rhinox Riders from FW aren't too bad (£26 each) so long as you stay away from the FW Thunderlord - I converted my own. Each of them comes with two Bulls as well (FW advertise it as one, cause they only give you one base and you need another set of arms - say, from Ironguts or Leadbelchers).

Been doing some converting recently - got my first Maneater built, but the camera died before I could take a pic. He's the first of my unit representing various different WHFB armies - I will use a mix of Greatweapons and Handgunners in the unit. The first one is a 'Black Orc' Maneater with Greatweapon - I have plans so far for a 'Brettonian Knight', a 'Chaos Warrior' and a 'Dwarf Thunderer' - plus I'll probably add a 'Handgunner' and some more besides (I aim to have around 5 or 6 total, and swap them around between games - also will use in my DOW army)

Anyway, what I did get pics of were:


My first Butcher (I say first, I will eventually convert up some more). I was going for a Grand Vizier type Arabian look with this one, hence the beturbaned head (from the Maneater mini), flying carpet (although in his case it barely hovers) and the Harem (Tooth Gnoblars mayhaps ) - the other reason for the carpet is it make him look taller than my other Ogres. I also followed gORCUS' tutorial to put him in a standing position. I need to GS him some more - the head arrived this morning and I need to tidy up the neck join, and maybe give him a bigger 'tache.


The second one is my Truthsayer - I have been using a Truthsayer fairly successfully in games recently (Gift of Life is awesome with Ogres) and so I decided to model one up as 'going native', having picked up some unsavory customs from his normal companions. He gets a 'height' Gnoblar to ferry him around, and a big cleaver (can't really see it in the pic, it's in his left hand). I have some GS work to do on him - am planning on giving him a mustache similar to the Ogre ones, and a bit of a gut.

Following suggestions on the Warseer painting group I am also rebasing my Ironguts - still need to highlight the base and add rocks n static grass. Will hopefully have pics at the weekend when the camera's charged again.

Been doing some work on converting my next Maneater, the 'Dwarf'-

This is an early WIP - I will be adding a chainmail shirt, a helmet and a large beard, plus some Handguns on his belt.

I've created the first batch of gaming tokens -

Skulls are wounds, skull and crossbones are two-wounds, the Leadbelcher weapons are to show which units are loaded, and the little hills are to place banners in when my Ogres inevitably break and flee - I use a pin to attach all my banners so they are removable for transport.

I have been busy painting the first unit of Leadbelchers -

They are almost done now, just have to do the details and base them.

Everything is looking great so far. The truthsayer 'height gnoblar' is awesome. You've got a real knack for armoring up ogres, something I have trouble making look good. Get a new picture of your tyrant, that first teaser won't do when I can sort of see the final product in the army shot.

I really like the beer-swilling Ogre.

Has been a wee bit mad lately here, but I have a bit of progress to report (finally). I managed to set up a rest for the camera this time so the pics are a tad better - I need to sort out a decent backing board or something though.

Firstly, I have finished the rebasing on my Ironguts and Bulls - also, I have finally settled on an icon for the tribe and added this to the Bulls' banner and the backplates of the Ironguts. I may still go back and add a few small rocks and patches of static grass to the bases though, but I kinda like the plain-ness of the bases.



I also finished off my Leadbelchers-



I have done more work on my Maneaters, these three are finished modeling-wise (I may add more later). A BIG thankyou to ogrebane and son, without your chainmail tutorial I probably would've never bothered with the 'Dwarf' Maneater.

Awesome. All your conversions are great. They're really full of character, and an excellent example of what can be done with kit-bashing.

First up - Maneaters are mostly done, just need a few details touching up and basing


Secondly, I have gotten some work done on Orgath Himself! Again, needs basing and detailing, plus I need to paint his Gnoblars


Finally, I have added more detail to my existing bases - basically added patches of flock. I'll probably get hold of some small stones too, maybe a few clumps of static grass.


I have undercoated most of the rest of my assembled minis, I still have some GS work to do on the second lot of Rhinox riders. I have started assembling more Ironguts (doing a new standard and bellower, and stealing one of the existing unit, essentially turning it into 2x3 'guts). I won't necessarily pay the points for the command groups in game, but to me units don't look right without the command...

Also I need to work out conversions for a second Butcher, possibly a Hunter, and some Gorgers For the Latter I am thinking of basing them on the plastic Rat Ogres, de-furred and 'Ogred-Up' with different heads etc.

What a great collection. The army is really coming together now. I love some of the conversions in there, and the basing is really pulling the force together. I wasn't sure about the skin colour to start with, but now I have seen them in the group shot, I can see how effective it is on a large scale. I look forward to seeing more.

I love the dragon helmet on the tyrant and the different man-eaters.  Keep up the great work.

The overall pic of your army looks good. I'm always a fan of a consistent army with a unifying colors. The red and brass complement each other nicely. I also love the dwarf maneater drinking beer.

Wow, I realized it's been a long time since I updated this blog!

Anyway, since last I posted, I finished off my Tyrant, Butcher and Maneaters. I also got some Gorgers converted and painted, my Truthsayer almost done (needs basing) and started on my first unit of Rhinox Riders (2 of them are painted, last one needs painting then I will base the lot) and put together a few gut magic markers (which need painting)

I realised I never posted the painted Tyrant or Maneaters in this log, so here they are:



I had a bit of camera failure recently - still hasn't been repaired so I had to borrow another one which was less good. Managed to get the following shots though -

First up, my butcher, Guld the Greedy - did a stint with some Maneaters over in Araby once, and became somewhat accustomed to their traditions. Even stole a small harem and a magic flying carpet, but under his weight it's more of a hovering carpet.


Also, converted and painted a couple of Gorgers. They get sent into the mountain tunnels around Karak Garaj quite often and end up eating lots of Skaven raiding party, and the warpstone has started to take it's toll on the rightmost on, hence the spikes (barely visible on his spine in this pic) and furry patches.


One of my New Years Resolutions is to keep this thing updated more often, so hopefully I will have more soon! I have inherited a ton of Ogres from one of the local gamers so I have plenty to be on with (once I find a decent stripping fluid that wont melt them!)

They are from http://www.hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/ - a nifty little indy mini producer, makes lots of good sci-fi/fantasy stuff.

As mentioned in Corai's log, myself, him and Wildcard all wound up at the Leeds heat for the Yorkshire open tournament. Despite me having relatively no experience of playing competitively, I still wound up qualifying for the Finals

Overall, I got a Draw (55pts to me) versus Corai's forces in a 'battle of the biggest bellies', which was an awesome game and well played - I am sure that had Corai's luck not been terrible he'd have thrashed me.

Second one was a minor loss versus a Vampire Counts player who effectively did nothing but sit in his deployment zone adding more to his units (and taking a long time over doing this) - he basically only won due to two of my butchers miscasting and exploding! (that game had a lot of miscasts - 5 in three turns! Of course, one of his just had to be the one that dispelled all my buffs automatically...)

Third game was a solid victory over high elves - it looked grim at the start with his Silverhelms slaughtering all my Bulls, but I eventually turned it around and battered him to death with my Ironguts. The Trappers actually made themselves useful this game, giving me a quarter, and my Gorgers enjoyed snacking on his Archers (about the only useful thing they did all day...).

And better still, I managed to blag best sportsman award for the tourney, which was a very pleasant surprise! Cheers to all who turned up to the tourney, it was a good deal of fun.

Of course, the 'fun' part of getting my army ready was painting up the majority of it in less than a week - it was Monday when I relented to the pestering of friends and decided to enter! Tuesday was spent sticking guys together and undercoating, Thursday saw me neatening up the undercoat and getting the first unit done, Friday was another unit and the rest was done Saturday!

Overall this week I have painted:
9 Ironguts (3 units of 3)
2 Butchers (including conversion work)
9 Gnoblar Trappers
2 Bulls (to add to another bull from previous unit)

Hopefully I will get some shots of the new guys soon, and some overall stuff. Unfortunately the camera I normally use is knackered, and the replacement has no cable so I need to wait for my housemate to get back from Cardiff so I can borrow his card reader!

If I read more often instead of just looking at pretty pictures I would have realised sooner where I had seen these oggies before.  I guess with all the frantic tournie painting you are set for Warseer's ToFP for a few months now!

k, this might be a bumb question but how much bigger is the FW rhinox to the standard GW one? because i have been looking to convert and ironskin army and need 2 of the bull rhinoxen.

it's about twice the size. The GW one fists on a 50mm base where as the bull rhinoxen take up a full chariot base

Huzzah - at long last, another update!

This time round, I have finished off my first unit of Rhinox Riders:


These guys were fun to assemble and paint. The horn-gnoblar (oo er missus) represents the Musician.

I'm not 100% happy with the bases, so may go back and do a bit more work. Basically due to lack of foresight I left some of the flash on the feet of the Rhinoxen, thinking the basing would cover it up. Alas, I was wrong... however, it's not that noticeable on the table top so isn't a high priority for me.

I still have plenty more to do with them, including the Slave Giant, a bunch more Maneaters to convert, more Bulls, Belchers and Ironguts, and a ton of Gnoblars!

However, they will be going on the back burner for a while. I still have loads of work on a High Elf army to do, and have signed up to the next TOFP on Warseer with my Dogs of War. Gonna be a busy year...

Awesome looking big guys, Orgath. If the flash on the rhinoxen feet is bugging you, have you considered using some clump foliage around the feet to cover up the bump? (I could give you a small packet of it if you wanna give it a try)

I was also thinking of maybe getting a few small rocks for the base - there's a bunch of loose gravel chippings next to the road outside I could jyoink (though the trouble is not looking like an idiot while I do it )

Reg - The map they are standing on is from Keep on the Shadowfells, basically the DnD 4th ed introductory module (which is pretty cool). We had it still out from the weekend and it made a better surface than the table, and beat going into the garage for a battlemat

I have greatly enjoyed 4th ed so far. The combat is very tactical, everyone serves a role and it's very much about the party working together, instead of like in previous editions where the Wizard dominated. All in all, a very good edition
