On Tuesday night I played one of my friends in the semi final of our local Games Workshops Winter Wars tournament.
I used -
Tyrant - Tenderiser, Daemon Killer Scars and Wallcrusher
Hunter- 2 Sabretusks, Skullplucker and x1 Magic Resistance
Butcher- Bangstick and Halfling cookbook
7 Ogre Bulls - everything except Champion (Butcher went in this unit)
4 Ironguts - fully tooled up unit (Tyrant went in this unit)
30 Gnoblar Fighters - champion
9 Gnoblar Trappers - champion
4 Leadbelchers - musician
4 Leadbelchers - musician
1 Gorger
I can't exactly remember my opponents list but it was something like -
1 Orc Warboss - tooled up and on a boar
2 lvl 1 Goblin Shamans - some magic items
1 Goblin Big Boss - on a wolf in the wolf rider unit
3 units of 30 Goblins with spears and 2 fanatics each
3 units of 25 Orcs (1 Big Un's unit)
1 unit of 9 Goblin Wolf Riders
1 unit of 20 Black Orcs
Giant
Here were the main points of the battle -
Turn 1 - He moved his wolf riders round the side of the terrain but I turned my Leadbelchers and shot them killing 6 and making the unit run off the table
Turn 2 - He advanced forward his Goblin units and I put forward my Ogres the Fanatics escaped and killed 2 of the Tyrants Irongut unit and 2 Leadbelchers.
Turn 3 - I charged a unit of Leadbelchers into one of the Goblin units and over ran it and the Fanatics preceded to kill another Irongut and 3 Bulls
Turn 4 - My Bull unit charged the Black Orcs and got slaughtered while my Ironguts and Leadbelchers made a second unit of goblins flee. The Hunter and Gnoblar Trappers took out a unit of Orcs with shooting. He used the Orc Lord on a boar to overrun my Bulls and ran into my Gnoblar Fighters.
Turn 5 - Gorger finally comes on the board and he turns his Black Orcs to face it getting them flanked by the Tyrant and his remaining Irongut which destroyed the unit. The highlight of the game happens when he rolls 4 ones and 1 two to hit my Gnoblars with the Black Orc Warboss on a Boar and then has to take a leadership test at -4 which he fails then gets a total of 4 with his three dice to run away. I then overrun him and my Gnoblars run into the Giant.
Turn 6 - The Gorger charges the giant and get's it down to two wounds with help from the Gnoblars. My Leadbelcher unit misfires all of it's shots and kills itself.
What I had left -
Tyrant
Hunter and sabretusks
1 Irongut
26 Gnoblar Fighters
9 Gnoblar Trappers
2 Leadbelchers
What he had left -
23 Orc Big Un's
30 Night Goblins
1 Goblin Shaman
Giant (less than half strength)
I ended up winning by around 430 Victory Points due to capturing standards and killing his general along with the points I was up on. Overall it was a very fun and evenly matched game, he only really made one tactical mistakes which was leaving open the flank of his Black Orcs. The Gnoblars killing his general was hilarious though it proves they really are useful. Those Fanatics are really annoying though.
I play either Dwarves or Bretonnia in the final and the winner gets a poster and £25 to spend in the shop. Me and the Orcs guy are also in the doubles tournament as well.
