Welcome all!

In this Gnoblog I'll be taking you through my eldar army from scratch.  I've just recently decided to get into 40K and have chosen the Eldar for my army base purely and simply on a handful of the models - namely, the new Harelquins!!

I love these guys and I really respect the painting challenge they represent.

I'm going to be sharing my propsed army list and walking you through the creation of each unit in terms of its construction, conversion, painting and basing - and maybe some playing when we're ready!

I'm really looking forward to this project (so much so I'm at risk of letting other things slip....I gotta be more disciplined!) and I'm sure that it'll be a fun journey!

OK, let's start from the top then.

I know nothing about 40K

not the fluff, not the rules, not the armies or the matchups.

mind you - I was in the same place when I started with ogres

Like my ogres, I have chosen my 40K army for one simple reason - the look of one bunch of models.

I love the new Harlequin models.  I think that they are dynamic and offer a lot of opportunities for painting that I haven't had before - and they certainly can have a much different look to the solid blocks of colour that populate many 40K armies that I have seen.

Maxing out on the Harlequins is my goal.  That meant 3 squads of 10, with as many upgrades as possilbe.  That was the easy part of deciding what to play.  I bought the BBB and the eldar codex and used the latter to examine what else I needed.

I was going to make a 1500 point army list, and just buy the models required to build it - so I needed to make sure I was getting the right stuff before I stuck my hand in my pocket.

I soon found out that a HQ choice and 2 troop units were required - so hit the internet looking for interesting and exciting ideas.  Another model soon popped out - the Eldar Rangers!  These looked great - I loved the individuality of the memebers of the squad.  

I checked the codex and liked the fluff as well - and decided that pathfinders were a must!  Their solitary wandering nature seemed to fit with the Harlequin's movement between craftworlds, and rang bells with their detatchment from the rest of the eldar race.  Initially I wanted 2 units of 5, but realized that I might be taking some centre-stage away from the 'Quins by doing so - so I dialled it back to a single unit.

Needing another troop choice, I began to ask some questions in forums and started to research the history of the eldar and the harlequins on the Internet.

I soon found images of the old Harlequin jetbikes with the canopy in the shape of the laughing god - they looked awesome and you can check out some pics of them here

these were converted out with dark eldar models, but the ideas really inspired me.  Looking in the codex, jetbikes were a cheap and samll unit to form, so I decided on 2 units of 3 of them, giving them the cannon as an upgrade.  I then ordered the harlequin jetbike canopies from GW (£2.50 each plus postage) - having been informed by their staff that they would fit the normal eldar jetbike model.

This left we with about 430 poitns left of my list and a need to get a HQ choice.

The HQ was giving me real problems - I was drawn to the avatar, but didn't really like the model or the fluff (not really harlequin-esque).  An Autarch was suggested, and I could give him a jetbike too - but not knowing how to play with them really didn't encourage me to go this route, despite it being suggested by many people.  A farseer sounded good, but looked fragile too....

....so leaving that for thr moment, I moved onto looking at heavy support for my troops.  I'm not a big fan of vehicles - it seems too much like playing with airfix kits to me, but I knew that any battles I was going to be in would be going up against big nasty stuff coming the other way, and I'd need a way to stop it.

enter the wraithlords!

the new plastic kit for the wraithlord, and the fluff behind them seemed great - and theyed defiantly be able to hut some tanks if I needed them to.  Speaking with other convinced me that they'd be attracting a lot of firepower too, and that didn't sound too bad if it meant keeping said nastiness away from my 'Quins

2 of them entered the list - each armed with a brightlance for the tanks and a pair of flamers for closer work on troops - and a wraithsword for close combat.

so with 155 points left I was down to the HQ choice again...

avatar or fully-loaded autarch??  both had their advantages in the game, but neither model appealed.  It was then that 2 things happened:

1) I learned that the harlequins had a craftworld of their own hidden in the webway - known as the Black Library - and a harlequin craftworld led to the possibility of an avatar residing in it - but perhaps one of the laughing god rather than khaine - and I also saw a converison in the back of the BBB.  The conversion was of a character called Sanguinus and was based on a Necron C'Tan Nightbringer model.  For those of you who have the BBB, its on page 263, top right corner.

I thought to myself, why not take the same model (another one I always liked) and convert it out into a harlequin avatar of teh laughing god - but sue teh same game rules as the avatar of khaine - after all, all it needs to have is a big-ass melee weapon!

this conversion will be the centrepiece of the army and I'll be painting it as per my harlequins.

I started Eldar too ( as I have mentioned a few times) but my painting skills will not do them justice.

I'm using the big blocks of paint as you mentioned, but that's better for my models ( I like to think)

I've assembled all 30 harlequins, the 5 rangers and a wraithlord now - and I'll be talking about them all in future posts

The Harlequins

30 Harlequins is quite an investement - no matter which angle you look at it from (points, cash or time).

These guys need to look good and I need plenty of variety on the table.  Having metal models does mean that the Harlequins are robust and well detailed, but it also means that poses can be limited.

I started by buying the box of harlequins, a deathjester, a shadowseer and a blister pack of 2 harlequins with the harelquin kiss weapon for each squad.  This gave me the 10 harlequins each troupe needed at a more reasonable cost.  Then, having learned that I needed to model all my harlequins with the exact weaponary they were listed as using, I found I needed to give 2 models in each troupe an extra harlequins kiss.

rather than buy more models, I'm opting for conversions on the shadowseer model and on one of the fusion-pistol 'quins from the main box.  I chose these two as they were the models who's wrists could accomodate a kiss conversion without it hampering existing detail on the model, and on which it wouldn't look too silly.

For the conversion I'll be using Green stuff for the bracelet and housing and a chopped up piece of cocktail stick for the kiss itself.  Fortunatly I have the other models so that getting the size right shouldn't be difficult.

Assembling Harlequins:

Most of the 'quins are 2 piece models, the pieces seperate at the waist.  I've got to start by saying - HOW MUCH FLUTING AND FLASH??!!??!?!?  The amount of trimming I had to do on each model was HUGE!  I figure that with all the bits of metal I had to snip off and file down I'd have been able to cast 2 more harlequins!

The pieces actually fit together quite well and you can move the bodies/legs around between models pretty much without worry.  The only really fiddly model from the main box is the troupe master himself.

This model has parts that connect by only the smallest of surfaces, and is also too small to pin easily.  This makes them a real pain to glue together.  They do look great once they work, but I can see the paitence is already needed with the harlequins.

the death jester only needs his weapon adding and I found this to be a really good fit - so good that on the first one I assembled I almost doubted the need for glue at all - it was that good!  (I glued it anyway - I'm not that trusting)

these went together fast.

the shadowseer needs a little more work, and the hand with the staff in another case of a small joint that can't be pinned easily - but it was in no way as hard as the troupe master.

It took me approx 2-3 hours for each unit to be cleaned, trimmed, assembled and based ready for undercoating. 

I still need to to the kiss conversions on 6 models and then I face teh choice of undercoating in black - as I usually do - or in white for the first time, and hope to get some really bright colours out.  I'm still not decided on this one.

The Rangers

(side note - whenever I try and write the word rangers, I actually write the word trappers and have to delete it   You know you've been playing ogres for too long when.....)

I had a spare 10-15 minutes yesterday while waiting for a meeting to start - so I quickly grabbed by snips, glue and my box of rangers and decided to get them ready

These models rock.  I'd always liked the pics, but seeing them IRL made them much, much better.  Each of the 5 rangers is defintaly an individual and you can see the little quirks in each figure.  The models themselves were pretty-much flash-free, requiring only a little work with each one.  Also, with only their backpacks to attatch, assembly and basing time were pretty much nil.

I'm not intending on converting the trappers (grr....done it again!  RANGERS! I mean RANGERS!) at all - the models jsut don't need it.  My task now becomes to consider different paint jobs for them to make them fit a theme of guardians of the black library.

I'm not going to try and paint them up as harelquins with cloaks - that would not feel right - but I need to feel a background colour running through my army - even if only as accents on each unit.  It'll unite the force that will look pretty disparate otherwise.

I'll have to think on what to use - but a dark colour might well be a part of that.

a possibility with the pathfinders is to convert them into having featureless masks. This could tie them into the harlequins  without changing the overall look of the miniatures. Love the idea for the avatar. Have you considered using some the original harlequins? could be a what to add some more variety to your squads and many of them have harlequins kisses on them. They are a bit more rooted then the new ones but a little wire and greenstuff should get them off the ground.

I'm not into 40k, so can't help you with that.
But painted models are always fun to look at

I have considered the older models for the harlequins - but that would now involve spending more money, and my budget has been pretty much strianed recently

doing a delicate conversion on a non-ogre model will be good practice for me anyway

The faceless masks were actually something I considered - but a lot of the character to the rangers is in their face, so I'll consider it - but I'll not make any decision just yet.

ive got a load of badly painted old school harlequins you could have, including 5 harlie jetbike conversions and an unfinshed jain zar i was converting into a great harlequin. ill even strip them for you if you wanted them,  PM me if ud like them

I must confess I too have recently caved and indulged in my Harlequin habit. I'll be startong a (much less in depth and well thought out) blog in the not too distant future. I was advised by some people in the know (wink, wink) to hold off on my chaos based fallen angels until Autumn when the new codex comes out. Apparently some of my coversions/sculpts etc may be made obsolete by the new chaos 'dex!

You Black Librariens sound really. I'm planning a much more slow progress build so I'm hoping your gnoblog will hep me out with some inspiration;)

This blog is very interesting Wildcard, and I'm glad for once that u appear to be going about this methodically (I'm just a bit anal about that sort of thing!). Anyway, about the Pathfinders, and masks. If their expressive faces makes you a bit worried about full-face masks, make sure the masks only hide part of their face, like the right or left half. This and their blankness could represent that these are outcast Harlequins who are not part of any troop, but still follow the Laughing God, and defend the Black Library. If even covering half the face fazes u, perhaps u could make it so they carry featureless, blank masks around their necks, or on their belts, thus symbolising their Harlequin alleigiance but also that they are not part of a troop.

speaking of progress - I got home tonight to find my harelquin jetbike canopies had been delviered   I'll be getting them built up tonight.

I must say, I'm getting quite hyper about this army now, its almost scary!  They are totally eclipsing my poor skaven at the moment - and I'll have to stay on track with them for the end of the month.

Corai: to be honest I always had a sneaking suspision you'd be falling for the Harelquins - it was just meant to be!

I'll have to get deeper into the harlequin fluff - especially before I start painting up the avatar.  I'm hoping to pick up the Nightbringer and the second wraithlord this weekend.

now THAT is one fun kit to work with!  I assembled mine this morning.  I'll give that it's own entry in the gnoblog in a minute.  I will say though that my movie-watching is going to influence my painting once again though, and that the wraithlords might just be the place to start....

Oh, I meant to say before, try looking at the necron deciever for a lighing god avatar. The deciever and the laughing god have sometimes been rumoured to be one in the same (supported in some fluff, disproved in others) and he certainly looks very harlequinesque.

Wraithlord

For the first of my two wraithlords I've gone for a pose with some motion to it, but with a general sense of a  battle about to begin. I was looking through my DVD collection for some inspiration (I have about as much willpower as Corai), and quickly found what I was after.

I wanted a distinctive colour scheme, some that I could use to accent the rest of my force, including the harlequins.  Something that, on a wraithlord, would look great when it walked into a mass melee with its wraithsword - and hopefully walked out again while its enemies lay bleeding or dead.

The yellow and black contrast reminds me of wasps - and I can see a lot of the wasp in the way that the eldar models are sculpted and in the way they seem to play out - fragile looking with a hell of a sting!

My first wraithlord then is going to be painted up in the style of The Bride.  The yellow and black colour scheme will be picked up on the rangers and jetbikes - and I'll use it in small patches on the harlequins and avatar to tie them all together

The first wraithlord is going to have a pose as if stalking forwards to sweep with its sword - the second I'll do diferently, but I've not yet decided how.  The pose should be very distinctive from the first, and I'll probably use more cloth effects (I've gone with armour on the first one) - maybe the bride from kill bill vol.2 - but with the colours from the orignial worked in a different way...

to work with, a wraithlord plastic kit is a blast!  fewer parts then I was expecting, plenty of options and, even without taking a knife to it, easy to get different poses with.  also, love the base!

GRRRR....anger at GW!!

I got the harlequin bike canopies, having been inforemd by store staff and staff online that they fitted the new eldar jetbikes

THEY DO NOT

not even close  

The harelquin canopies are shorter and, more importantly, underneath they have 3 metal "struts" that lead to a central "hole"  The standard canopy joins the bike at the front of the canopy using a long-ish slot.

In order to mesh the 2 I'll have to either take out the struts from the underside of the metal harlequin canopy - or seriously trim down the join at the front of the plastic jetbike and them work out a way for the 2 pieces to mesh. (probably a lot of glue required).

The harelquin canopies will make the bike not look as sleek as their counterparts, but I think I can live with that.

hmm, it's been a good few years now but I don't remember having many problems fitting the harlequin canopies to the jetbikes. Maybe I did a bit of trimming. Ig you're cutting off struts, it might be worth pinning the canopies in place as the metal from will unbalance the model and you don't want them to fall over and break apart!

pinning might be mu only option - the bike will get a little front heavy unless I'm careful.  I'll be trying out options tonight, but I kinda need to make a decision before I cut into anything.

If I get a chance at lunchtime I'll try it then

I have been looking into the history of harlequins IRL in an effort to see if ay colour/pattern schemes suggested themselves.  I like to see what inspiration I can find from non-gaming sources - here are some examples of what I found.

I find that looking for inspiration can really help me. I did the same with my normal ogre tribe when I first started warhammer.

I finalkly managed to get the time to undercoat 8 harelquins last night - all of a squad except the shadowseer and a trouper that will be converted to have kisses tonight. 

I hope to make a start on the painting tonight, but I'm giving a presentation on child online safety at my school so I'm not sure how much I'll have time for.  I must say though that seeing Corai's progress is really spurring me on

seriously, this project of mine has been neglected for far too long and its time I got back into it!

I'll be getting this army done as my top priority over the next few months.  I don't think I'll be able to turn it around as fast as my tomb kings/crons army, but I'll see what I can do

updates within a day or too - time to start assembly!

last night was quite busy, but I managed to build all 6 jetbikes with teh harelquin canopies, the second wraithlord and the avatar - as well as work repairs on some of the other models that needed it after getting bumped around in cardboard boxes for the last few months.

I now ahve an assembled army and will, hopefully, be giving them a trial run (my first ever 40k game) tonight.

undercoating will take place this weekend (whole army) and then the painting can begin

How could I have missed this gnoblog... and it was created more then 6 months ago... Well, I'll be looking forward to following your work, WC, as I am also building my Eldar army, these days. As soon as I finish off the titan, the Vampire hunter, and the Scorpion Type II, I can comence the assembly of the wind rider host box (i.e. autarch on jetbike, 9 jetbikes, 2 vypers) and 2 wraithlords.

I should follow the Saim-Han color scheme, with black-red heavies.

right, I've had my first game of 40k now - and yes, its very different from fantasy - it seems more about the dice and less about the people if that makes any sense?

anyway, I was up against an imperial guard army fielding:

3 hellhound tanks
1 medusa tank (with some kind of seige gun)
1 basilisk (with a very big gun)

3 setinal walkers
5 units of 10 troops with las guns, but with plasma weapons and missile launchers too
1 guardsman leader

The game?

I got first turn and ran forward, he nuked my avatar while I concentrated on his tanks with my wraithlords and sent my harlequins in where needed.  exploding tanks and walkers killed several harlequins.  The 'quins finally hit the troops and ripped them apart while the jetbikes gave some support on flanks.

by the end of the game I'd wiped him out. both my wraithlords were still standing and 2 squads of harlequins were still on half strength - I'd lost everything else.

I found out that the hit and run rule was really good and I'll be using it as much as possible in future.

woah! i'm surprised enough of your models got across the table! and that you got rid of his tanks. congrats!

everything is built, but only 1 squad of harlequins is undercoated, and nothing is painted yet - it might by a while before pics are availiable.

However, I have decided to paint this army in the order I have to deploy them on the table - so I'll be starting with the wraithlords   I'll see what I can get done this week.

right - I've just undercoated my pair of wraithlords and will start painting them tonight.

(for those keeping track, I've just undercoated my 4 scraplauncher conversions too!)

right!

I've become overwhelmed lately will little bits of lots of different projects going on (sound familiar anyone?) but I managed to get 2 games of 40k in today at my local store

the first was vs. space marines and the harelquins wiped the board in 3 turns - my opponent conceded after losing all of his vehicles and all but about 3 or 4 marines who were surrounded.  I lost 1 quin and 3 jetbikes doing it.

the second was vs. the sisters of battle and, in the first turn I'd taken out all of his tanks as well and, due to some nice fleet rolls teh quins had also got into his troops and ripped most of them to pieces too for the loss of 3 rangers and 3 jetbikes - my opponent quit at that point too as he was going to get himself perished fast.  Funniest bit was 2 units of quins convering on a land raider (I think - big nasty tank anyway) and rending it to pieces

this has rekindled my interest in getting my quins army finished and so I'm going to knuckle down and get on with them.

my first job is to do another wraithlord.  I hate the pose I did with my first one - it's just too boring - so I'm going to do a new one.

I've decided to replicate the patterns of the harelquin frog on quins themselves.  Luckily this particular frog comes in more than one colour

some are yellow and black
some are green and black
some are red and black

so I'll be able to use all 3 colours on my squads so that I can tell who belongs with who during games

my wratihlords are going yellow and black (a reverse of the quins) and following a pattern reminicent of the "bride" from kill bill

my bikes - I'm less decided on these at the moment...

my rangers will be a muted scheme folowing the rest of the army, but toned down

my avatar (I'm using the c'tan deceiver) will be a mix of red, yellow, green and black and painted as a more traditional harelquin style costume.

For the Bikes how about the Red and Black as I think they will suit the bikes nature (at least I think) but it's up to you, things you should ask yourself are what colours will suit the bikes and what colours will you like on the bikes. Well I'm glad I know the colour scheme and good luck.

as for being lucky - no, I don't think that.  My dice and his dice weren't doing anything special in any of the 3 games, and in my latest 2 games my opponent went first too (something I'm told is a big advantage in 40k - even more than fantasy).  One of my opponents was alright, the other 2 were 40k GT players.

Well, whatever it may be, it seems you're doing a mighty fine job, so keep it up.

I am still new in the whole Eldar world (and 40K) but what I 've learned about Eldar, after reading the book 100 times, and discussing the list over and over with friends and Eldar players (and getting some games on the table too) is that:
-writhlords need a psyker near by, otherwise, they risk of doing nothing for a whole turn;
-the Avatar is awsome, and we all know this, but alone he won't do much;
-both these problems can be solved with Eldard, who can twinlink the save of two monstrous creatures, for a whole turn;

The list is quite slow and static, apart the jetbikes, which, by experiance, are not very strong but have nothing more than a supporting role. Instead of a third WL, you can get a Falcon; or get a wave serpent for one of the Harley units.

The wraithsword is quite useless: the usual config for the WLords is Blance and Starcannon which can work great both against tanks and infantry.

The typical list I have seen, at least here in Italy, is the so called Onion list. It is called Onion for 2 reasons: it has multilayer and it makes the opponent cry (it is one of the strongest list among all the WH40K tournament circus):

2x10 guardians with weapon platform
5-6 fire dragons on waveserpent
1 wraithlord
2 falcons

if there are other points, they are used for more aspect wariors.

my list isn't static or slow - it jsut looks that way

harlequins will move, fleet and then assualt upto 18" - and the shadowseers are psykers so can ensure my wraithlords are kept moving with a little careful placement.  They then hit and run upto another 18" too!  With 3 units I've found I can just about be anywhere I want on a board quite fast - especailly as 'quins ignore terrain penalties (as do the jetbikes and monsterous creatures - and the rangers too!)

For my wraithlords, I've found that my twin flamers work well enough on infantry, and that the wraithsword (as well as looking great on the model) has allowed me to make hits that would otherwise have missed (generally when I have him hitting vehicles that have moved so you'd normally only hit them on 6's - with the wraithsword you should on an average roll get a hit in).

who's eldard??  I've not found him in my codex.

Eldard is this dude:


he is a special character: he is a farseer that costs 210 pts. He has all the psychic powers and can even repeat one in the same turn. He can make d3+1 units re-deploy at the begining of a game, after the opponend has deployed; he is a bane in Close Combat and has super dooper powers...
Combined with the inspiring ability of the Avatar, the two make a very solid block with the guardians (I use dire avengers instead) and the wratihlords.

He is, in the book, just before the pheonix lord and Yriel, I think.

Right - a little more progress here

I've built my next wraithlord tonight and gone for a dramatic pose with it rushing forwards getting ready to bring its wraithsword round in a vicious arc!

pics as soon as I can.

I got to play another game vs. the sisters of battle tonight.  I lost my rangers and a squad of harlequins (flamers are nasty!)  but wiped him off the board and grabbed all table quarters while I was at it

I've been learning more about how hit and run works, but the most confusing bit right now is how tey engae mutliple units and pile in to them....just seems messy to me

right well, with the albion fantasy campaign this weekend I've not had much time to do anythign with them - but I plan on undercoating everything tonight, and building my autarch on a jetbike too.  I'll be  bit miffed that he won't have the harlequin canopy for his bike, but I'll have to come up with a paint scheme that drags him into the army theme anyway...

one thing - while at warhammer world this weekend I succumed to temptation and ordered a elder revenant titan (with pulsars) from forgeworld - it'll take some time to get it too me, but I'm looking forward toworking on a superheavy too - going harelquin with it as well of course, I'm even going to try and pose it like a harelquin

I've just undercoated the force tonight - although I'm still autach-less as I haven't had the time to build him yet.

I'll be trying to paint my wraithlords tomorrow (at least getting one of them finished).

well, no such luck on getting things painted - time seems to be really scare at the moment, but I have had another great addition to my force arrive

My forgeworld revenant titan (with pulsars) has arrived!  The kit itself fits in a suprisingly small box, and I was overawed by the cost of the model - but once you get to look at the parts you realize just how gorgeous a model it is and the thought of the expense goes right out of your head.

needles to say I'll be taking my time over this one...

Nice. I am, however, short some hands on the single 28mm model I ordered from FW on the same day and am now looking at 2+ weeks to get a single hand!

Sorry about it, Jo, but, for symmetry reasons, I had to second Dan's post (luckly, I already posted my Titan, so nobody can say that to me ).

You say you have an extra head... so you have 3? 'cause, IIRC, Revenants shoudl come with 2 heads.

Sounds like juicy terrain/objective marker/basing fodder.

In fact an ejected open cockpit with a plastic guardian/harlequin climbing out would make a nice bit of detail for your titan's base (assuming it is going to have one )
