Greetings, In my campagin army, my Bruiser General, who already has the Mawseeker Big Name, now has the option to gain either +1 Strength or +1 Toughness (there are a few other options as well, but these are the most interesting ones).
So, which to choose? Strength 5 and Toughness 7, or Strength 6 and Toughness 6

Strength 6 so you can wound T4 on 2+
taladryel07 Feb 2006
What's his equipment?
Doesn't matter - you can always raise his strength with a GW, but you ordinarily can't raise his T or armour save. [And I bet he'll be the prime target for all those S7 Jaguar-charm Lizard characters...]
T7. Hands down. No contest.

What's his equipment?
So far it's been GW, HA & Jade Lion, but upping his S to 6 gives me more options, for example to take an ironfist or a longsword. T7 is naturally tempting, since it makes him compltely imune to S3 and means that even S5 attacks only wound him on a 6.
For the record, his other options are: 1) Killing blow - The character gains the Killing blow ability when using a mundane close-combat weapon. 2) Master Strike - Models hit by the character suffer an additional –2 to their armour saves (-3 if they have less WS than the character). 3) Mighty blow - The character may choose at the start of each Combat phase any number of attacks to give up. Each attack given up gives him +1 S for that phase. 4) Strongman - When using a weapon that would normally make him strike last, the character strikes at Initiative 3.

I voted To7. Strength can be improved, in a way or another, but To no, and having 7 means he won't be hit very easily, yet being able to deal some serious damage. cheers

As someone else said, S can be increased any number of ways. T7 makes you immune to all S3 attacks. That is pretty big, IMO. You can run him around alone in front of generic archers all you like.

Ah, unfortunately it only works against non-magical close combat attacks, so it's not actually +1 T, just the next best thing.

I would take master strike in those options. Negating armor saves is huge.

+ 1T, if you give him a GW he has s7 and t7!!
Wargut07 Feb 2006
Toughness pwns strength nearly every time. If you take a strength feat other then this one go with the masterstrike ability. AN ogre club with -5 to as is insane
Avian07 Feb 2006
I'm not so sure about that. If I should take Master strike, I'd like to have +1 Strength first, since I'd then wound T4 critters on 2+ as well.

T7. Give him a GW for S7 - which is strong enough to ignore anything less than 2+ armor saves.

Hmm, I actually ended up voting for S6 and T6. The +1 Toughness is pretty huge, but he does only get it against close combat mundane attacks. I've discovered that the only people my bruisers or tyrants usually have problems with are monsterous creatures and other characters in combat (other than shooting of course). Most characters are packing some sort of magical weapon, and that would totally negate the +1T bonus. If the +1 S doesn't have any downside to that, I would pick that. Use that, plus a Cathyan Longsword or a Sword of Striking and he can kill an awful lot of stuff.
taladryel07 Feb 2006
Actually, a majority of the best fighty characters in the game (Saurus, Vampires, Chaos) tend to run around with GWs as this allows them to blow their points on other stuff.
Additionally, the only consistently high-strength magical attacks from characters will come up when you're facing Ogres or Daemons.
So. Now, the HW/IF option at S6 is interesting, though I'd be tempted to give him a Sword of Striking at that level. However, my philosophy is that my character will always whiff, which makes T7 a precious commodity.

Hey, your tyrant must be related to my tyrant. Actually, that isn't true. But I think your tyrant must be the father of all my iron guts, cuz "whiff" is their middle name. And their first name. And their last.

Personally, I'd go for T7 and use a GW for S7, T7.

I would go for T7, it might not matter to a lord or hero in a challenge but like other said against core troops of S3 they won't be able to touch you.
Harlequin08 Feb 2006
As the others have said strength can be bumped, toughness will give you a huge advantage.
