The Harvesters of Khorne

original thread ↗

Hi all! This is my second Gnoblog, this one will be based mainly on my Beasts of Chaos army. Why include the Maw in their name? Because they will have close ties with the Iron Maw Tribe, in fact so close that some of the beasts in the army will actually begin to worship the Great Maw! This simple name is given to the mass of beasts that emerge from the forests to swarm over any villages in the way. They hit in the dead of winter, when supplies are already low for townsfolk, just to inflict that much more suffering  icon_twisted.

The basis of this union is that I have a large OK army, and a huge BoC army, and I want to use them both! But for background purposes, what will happen is Blugh the Iron Maw will ally with the leaders of my beast herds. They currently are Undivided, and of course worship all of Chaos. Blugh's incessant preaching actually reaches some of the beasts, and convince them to worship the Maw. In the meantime, the Bray Shaman's of my herds try to convince the beast leaders to stay away from Blugh and his Ogres. However, they cannot deny the awesome prowess the Ogres bring to the battlefield...

I hope this is an interesting twist on the idea of Chaos Ogres. Blugh's devotion to the Maw is so deep and powerful, he begins to sway even non-Ogres around him, gathering allies and making new enemies among the followers of Chaos.

For my actual army composition, I will focus on all Beasts, with the exception that I will use some Chaos Knights as well for Specials. Following PsychosisPC's examples, I made "Knightgors". Those models (along with just about everything else of his) really inspired me. The regular Centigor is one of my favorite models, so I made the Knightgors to fit with them and my all beast theme. I am working on making my own Gorthor the Beastlord model, because

A: I don't like the current model

B: I don't see a place for chariots in an army based in the woods.

So what I am doing is making a "Centaur Lord" of sorts. I got Archaon's horse, did some massive cutting and sanding, and added a Dragon Ogre torso/head to it, to make something I hope is unique! I will use Gorthors full rules, but base this model on a chariot base in order to comply with all the rules. So the fact that he is a Centaur is for my own wishes, and to help explain the high movement/hitting power of the chariot/Bagrar/Tuskgors.

For my Doombull (which I am using simply because I like them!) I used the Ogre Tyrant body, with a GW minotaur head, extra sculpted details with GS and Sculpey, and we'll see what else! It is not done yet, but I hope to have some WIP pics up soon! What I figured is, if I ever do use a Tyrant, the mino head can be explained as a trophy taken in battle against The Reaping during their first meeting. It's just large enough to look like a big helmet if necessary.

Here are some pics of the WIP Doombull:

cool, good to see another gnoblog from you Blugh (and a chaos one at that icon_smile) The Doombull conversion looks pretty cool, but I really want to see it painted to get the full ffect! The conversion for Gorthor also sounds like a great idea. I'm doing something similar for scrag, anything suitably impressive on a chriot base can make a geat 'counts as chariot' and you giant centigor sounds like it will be awesome. Have you seen the old wood elf centaur thing that was amde form archaons horse and orion's upper body?

Thanks

Thank you! Yes I hope to work on it more this weekend, both models actually. Some of the time may be taken up with ANOTHER project of mine...Might get a third Gnoblog, LOL.

No I've never seen that, do you know where that could be found??

I plan to make some house rules for an actual Centaur Lord, I think that could be awesome. My model will be removable from the chariot base for this purpose!

Yes it came together so quickly, I didn't even plan for all this, but through two large trades, here I am! I absolutely LOVE BoC, only played a few games with them but I'm a sucker for armies with mad options, and Chaos has it!

I'm also a huge fan of making sure I can get multiple uses out of my models, so that explains some of the units I have listed. For example, my "Bloodletters" are old plastic Beastmen (which surprisingly rock), but of course they can sub in as regular Gors if necessary. My Pestigors can double as Plaguebearers...etc.

Following your lead Ghworg, I may craft my own Chaos list using BoC and OK together more than just using Ogres as Special choices...but thats a bit off from now. Just gotta get on my themes and get crackin'!

SUNDAY APRIL 29TH: MORE WIP PICS

Here are some pics of various units. The Doombull you've seen, I added a Minotaur weapon and old Chaos shield for forearm armor. I could've gone with the huge axe...but I love the sheer brutality of a huge @$$ cleaver!

The Beastlord is one of, I don't know, 7 that I've built, LOL. I seem to have this problem with building too many leaders (same as with my Space Wolves, but there its necessary!). I bought the Beastlord with two axes on Friday, I've always liked that model. However because of the Centigor conversion I'm doing I had leftover Archaon bits, so I built a second Wargor/Beastlord.

The Centigor will serve many purposes for me. As I said earlier he will count as Gorthor, a Chaos Lord on Steed, and as a Centigor Lord character I'm planning...

To tie in with the Centigor is a "Drunkeness Counter" I made for my Centigor unit. I saw the idea on the Herdstone, and I loved the simplicity!

And finally, I don't have pics ATM, but I also converted a Chaos Lord using the Archaon on foot model. I actually used this originally for a Doombull, and had some fluff going that this was a human Chaos Warrior that was such a bad mutha, he ended up in control of a Beastherd, with insane combat skills. So he actually counted as a Doombull, but he was a human. This was done to b*tch-slap a friend of mine with limited imagination, who tried to tell me that humans look down on beasts. I too read that in the army books, but didn't care! I explained it that this guy was so crazy and awesome, no one stepped to him, EVER! Oh well, I like doing things differently sometimes, my personal rule is, as long as you have a cool theme, with clear explanations that don't break the rules, you're good to go  icon_cool

Here you go! The pics are links to larger images:

I know excatly what you mean about converting too many characters. something about chaos makes me want to just keep making more! I love your centigor conversion, it looks realy amazing. did you say the body came from a dragon ogre? And I'm assuming the head is from the steed which forms the body? This guy is really amazing. I can't wait to see him get some paint! The Beastlord from archaon at the bottom is also really dramtic and great. However, I think the plastic legs look a little weedy compared with the metal torso. Maybe a loincloth or some armour plates/chainmail etc could help with this.

Thanks

@ Corai: Thank you! Yes the body of the Centigor is Archaon's horse, with a Dragon Ogre torso, and the horse's head is on there as well. I tried a few different ideas, but nothing seemed right. This horse looks evil and more importantly, pissed off! I agree on the legs of the Beastlord, I was thinking of adding armor plates and some chainmail. It was just getting late, LOL. Yeah I have I think 4 Bray Shamans in the works, and I know I have at least two other Beastlord/Wargors, plus the new one PLUS this one. I can't help myself.

TUESDAY, MAY 1ST: QUICK UPDATE

No pics today, but I added armor and a loincloth to my Beastlord last night. I also sculpted a bracer for the Doombull's right arm. I started sculpting muscle onto the Centigor Lord, the more I looked at it the more I realized the horse head is just slightly too big for the Dragon Ogre body. So using the body as my armature, I started to bulk out the Centigor. I hope to get some pics up tonight!

@ Corai: Thank you! I did some more sculpting to the Centigor, as well as removing the gut plate from my Doombull. I just didn't like it round. It looked too similar to an Ogre Gut Plate. Not that there's anything wrong with the gut plates of course, I was just thinking for something different!

BTW, does anyone out there know the official name for that kind of armor? I'd like to see some styles, but I don't know what its called in real life.

Ok, here are some little updates, I added some armor to Beastlord and Centigor Lord, and I changed the gut armor of the Doombull slightly.

The right shoulder pad of the Centigor chipped on me...but I think I will use it like this. I was going to damage it anyway, LOL.

Doombull:

Centigor Lord, with shot of spear:

Beastlord. I put one leg pad on, figuring much like the Spartans his shield will protect his left side.

The doombul's really coming along, but the large armoured gut plate looks a little bare at the moment. that can, of course change with painting but I'd consider adding some device or detail to it. The centigor lord still looks fantastic, more so with every update. And the beast lord's really come along. the additions to the legs realy balance the model out, it's going to look awesome

OK two more small pics. One highlights the shield I built for the Centigor, the other his spear. If you recall, I'm using the rules for Gorthor the Beastlord to represent this model, so I built the spear, Impaler (set with barbed rings, causes more damage) and I worked the Skull of (cant remember the name) into the model as a shield. The Skull gives Gorthor protection against any hit higher than S5, so to show that I made a shield using a Bull Standard skull sans horns, and some other races shields. I cut the horns off awhile ago, and decided it may still work (Gorthor b*tch-slapped the horns off the guy, stuck his head on his shield to be uber bad-@$$!).

I'm not sure if I want to keep that skull on without horns or not...what does everyone think?

The last definite item I need is a cloak of some sort, to represent the Cloak Gorthor wears (gives ward save equal to strength of attack). I will probably make it a huge flowing ordeal, LOL.

For the skull, I'd take the horns all the way off and round over the edges. At the moment it does look a little like they've just beein snipped off. Alternatively you could bore tham out (horns are hollow IIRC).

Loving the model, but I'd be wary of a cape. the back of the centigor and horse flow realy well and it would be a shame to coverthis up with a cloack, but it would look very nice if it was flowing off the model somehow

You could make the cape very short so it only covers the, uhm, upper body.
Or if you're making it longer, it could fall next to the lower (horse) body.

The work to the horns sounds like a good idea. I think if they looked like they were ripped off, that would get the effect across better. Come to think of it, I actually think most horns are solid, or mostly solid. I'll check into that though, thanks for the idea Corai.

I'm not 100% sold on the shield either...still thinking about that one.

As for the cloak, I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do. If I do one, I think I would prefer it flow around him somehow, maybe similar to Archaon's, however I wouldn't want to directly copy it. I will test it out with Sculpey, it won't harden unless I bake it so I can experiment. I'll try and get some pics up tomorrow night.

I loved the Doombull when I first saw it, and now it looks even better. The minotaur head fits really well on the Tyrant body, eh? The maw symbol looks great, it really resembles some fearsome mouth. I liked the plain version as well, especially for freehand opportunities, but it looks great.

@ Vincenti: Thanks! I think I'm going to go with a gut plate of sorts on the Centigor Lord. Besides flailing hooves, I think it would be best to have an armored front so the body can "Bull Charge" so to speak. Yeah I like the Minotaur head better than the Doombull, plus it was a nice fit! I'm not using a Tyrant for my Ogres anyway, but if I do this model can stand in (fluff-wise for me) as a Doombull, or as a Tyrant who wears a Minotaur's head for a helmet, LOL.

Yeah I considered adding horns, or even the entire Tyrant gut plate, to the Centigor. Only real problem there is the legs are right there, and theres not a lot of room. Kind of a situation where it would look awesome, and yet be too much, you know?

Yeah the Minotaur head i just added a big blob of GS, then went around it with sculpey to bulk out the neck/shoulders area and make him a little bigger.

QUICK UPDATE:

I received 10 Centigors from a trade, and assembled them last night. I will be adding armor and things to them, bits, etc.

Interesting note though, my Centigor Lord should be pretty convincing....don't know why I didn't think of this before, but I placed him next to a Centigor, and holy crap he's enormous! Truly heroic proportions! So that should work nicely as a leader, or if I use him as Gorthor (stated earlier in blog for those of you joining late!)

I have off until Tuesday, but we;re really busy doing things so hopefully I can get a game in and maybe get some work done. I should be playing my nephew''s Orcs and Goblins tomorrow, 2500 points. I'll try to post the list and some highlights!

A huge block of Chosen Knights of Khorne  icon_evil I like to try out different things, things people don't always use, such as my 5 man LB DoW unit...I've always had good luck with LB's, and I wanted some kind of wildcard. It can decimate Goblin hordes, or thin out Skeletons next week (I hope).

The Centigors will flank, and have throwing axes just in case theyre charged first, or if I can throw them first, either way is good. The Dragon Ogres can flank one of the SuperHerds, with the LB's on the other Herds flank. I think the Knights will charge straight down the center  icon_evil

And here's a pic of my entire army, except for two shameful models...a Mage Knight Giant (which I of course would use as a Giant) and a Mage Knight Dragon with a Slaanesh Chaos Lord on it. I don't normally mix models like that, but I like the Dragon enough to not pay for a GW one. As for the Giant, I probably won't use one anyway, much as I like the new model, so this will do for now.

"i dont do small armies"

@ Khorgoth: First off, I LOVE your screen name. I gotta start thinking for names for my characters. And yes I have a full list of everything I can play, some things would be proxies but I have quite a bit. The list is posted on the first page I think. I eventually want to do an all-Mortal Chaos army, so I will be adding more...

So I played my nephew this morning. I'm going to give you the abbreviated report, because, well, he gave up at the end of the second turn! He's not childish or anything about it, he really and truly was screwed, LOL.

First Turn:
My army went first. Everything marched full speed ahead. His first turn saw some units moving forward, some shooting left a few Ungors and a few Warhounds dead but otherwise I was unscathed. Particularly nice was his Rock Lobba hitting but missing some of my Chosen of Khorne.

Second Turn:
I brought the hate. I got charges off all over the place. Dragon Ogres, Warhounds on both sides, two units of Centigors (others went stupid), LB's fired and did nothing (a first for me! Still love them) Chosen Knights STUPIDLY charged a Giant...lesson learned for me, only charge a Giant with something I don't care about. I thought the Knights could plow him over, but his Yell and Bawl sent them running...damn. Every unit that charged did some serious killing. Both Centigor units caught fleeing Goblins and ran them down, hitting other units. The Knights did do three wounds, but of course not quite enough. The Dragon Ogres charged a Shaman riding a Wyvern, and DESTROYED IT. And then my Ambushing units arrived, right behind the rest of his army. After he finished his part of the turn, he looked with despair as I had his entire army surrounded. We discussed options (we're always friendly in our games!) and he decided that he was screwed. He truly was, I almost felt bad...but then Khorne assured me I did the right thing by bringing smite to my own nephew.

End result? Massive massacre for me.

This was my first huge victory, the entire army worked just as I had hoped, I learned some lessons, and I'm make just a few tweaks for my battle against VC next week!

Wow, that sounds like a damn hard army to beat. Be interesting to see what opponents come up with to beat it.
2 Pet Gnoblars! I dub them Itchy and Scratchy, for reasons that are too private to divulge.
Yeah I'm pretty happy with it. I think it's pretty balanced, I don't have anything thats insane, except maybe the Khorne Chosen. Against the VC player though I will have one glaring weakness, magic. I have no offense, but thats fine, I will need some more dispel dice. I'm going to work on those details this week, hopefully later tonight. I think I'm going to add a Bull Rhinox Rider, to hit on a flank and cause some terror. I'll also need some magic weapons to take care of Banshees I know he will play, plus some other Ethereal things. I may put some Bray Shamans in the herds, with the Lore of Fire, to Ambush and cast some fiery doom up some Skeleton ass, LOL.

Does anyone know, does fire attacks harm magic creatures? Can't remember!

Yeah the base is 100x100, you can have that size base with I think Tomb Kings Chariots, but regardless normal GD models are on 50x50, so if anything you can still line up against it easily in combat.

However I am sticking to my guns, Khorne will dominate all!

Thanks Ghworg! Yeah I will be ok. The job was hard enough, but then some things happened in my marriage that caused us to separate about 3 weeks after I was fired. So this has been a bad couple of weeks for me.

Now I have to sell my house and look to a new future. Fortunately I just today accepted a job that should prove very fruitful for me, and some other things are starting to look up elsewhere.

So in my spare time my army should receive some Khornate love, LOL.

"i dont do small armies"

I'm back! Here is the opening of the story of my army, the Harvesters of Khorne! Let me know what you think!

Pain gripped Gorgaroth as he struggled to rise. His muscles were torn, battered and bruised. New stabs of agony ripped through his left arm and wouldn't support his weight. A shaft of light peering through a moldy crack lanced into his one good eye; How many days had it been since he had seen sunlight? Sinking to the floor without a sound Gorgaroth cursed himself for a fool. The enemy had swarmed him, tens, maybe hundreds had come to stop him. All had fallen beneath his axe blades. Heaping mangled corspes about him, Gorgaroth made a human wall of the dead, their bodies cast aside as children's rag dolls. He fought bravely, he fought as one blessed. Still the enemy came, still they fell. Stalking amidst the howling masses was a lone wizard, his eyes and hands aglow with a faint, blue tinge. Gorgaroth hurled an axe dropped by one of his victims full force at the skulking wizard. And no mortal could've dodged the missle, for in truth Gorgaroth was an expert in fighting with all manner of weaponry. He favored the axe of course, but this cast of his weapon saw itself buried in an unfortunate fool, blundering in the path between wizard and warrior. The wizard was unmoved, a faint smile twisting his cruel lips. He called out, words long forgotten to most civilizations, and pointed a bony finger at Gorgaroth. For all his gesturing, the wizard's spell was invisible, but those in attendance would later say that the bloodied fighter fell as though struck dumb. Those around Gorgaroth leapt on their chance, pummeling the now-helpless man into the bloodsoaked earth. He awoke, shackled and beaten. Rage swelled deep inside him, rage and fury at having been beaten on the battlefield. His warrior's honor was stained, although he knew fate to be a fickle mistress he raged against the luck that cast that knave into the path of his axe. Had he struck his intended target...Gorgaroth felt a deep growl growing in his chest. He sounded his battlecry, his rasping voice going hoarse at the strain.

"Eh! Quiet yerself back there! We'll have ye on the choppin' block soon enough!" A heavy footfall clambered down the dank hallway to Gorgaroth's cell. The chamber itself was unique, for it was larger than the rest of the cells. Chains held Gorgaroth so that his hands and feet were manacled together to the center of the chamber. Hefting both of his massive arms, Gorgaroth tried in vain to snap the thick iron links. "Ye won't break those my boy, not 'a one of the hundreds who've been in these cesspits has ever broken those bonds. Ye won't be different than the rest, ya lout!" The jailer leered through the bars at Gorgaroth, baiting him in his rage.

"Take a step into this cage, peasant, and I'll leave you here to rot."

The huge jailer was stupid, and trusted to his girth and the iron bars of his jail to protect him. "I'll send ye to hell before I take that guff from any the likes of you!" With a groan the cell door flung open. The jailer had to turn sideways to squeeze his considerable bulk through the rusted doorway. Standing at his full height, the jailer was indeed an imposing figure. His enormous gut was covered in muscle over prodigious fat. Flexing trunk-like arms he stood in Gorgaroth's face, being sure to stay just outside of his reach. "Care to repeat yerself, swine?" Pungent breath, reeking of garlic and cheap ale blasted into Gorgaroth's face. Gorgaroth lowered his head, so low that his eyes could not be seen. Leaning in closer the jailer laughed, spittle covering Gorgaroth's head. "I thought not, ye dog! No one talks to me in here without my say-so, and let me--"

Gorgaroth's voice croaked out a quiet noise, just loud enough for the jailer to hear. "What was that? What did you say?" The jailer didn't wait for an answer before slamming a sledge-like fist into the side of Gorgaroth's head. For all his power, the jailer barely moved the stoic prisoner. Enraged at this display of defiance, the jailer rocketed another punch at Gorgaroth, thudding into the other side of Gorgaroth's head. Gorgaroth barely registered the hit, murmuring yet another thing beneath his breath. The jailer leaned ever so slightly closer, opening his mouth to speak. As a cobra strikes, Gorgaroth launched upward, slamming the crown of his head into the open jaw of the jailer. The jailer was easily three times the size of Gorgaroth, but for all his bulk he could not save himself against Gorgaroth's desperate move. Rocking back on his heels, the jailer reeled. Gorgaroth moved panther-like, swinging the short chains around the flabby neck of his tormentor. A fat tongue lolled out of the jailer's mouth, thick fingers clawing desperately to pull Gorgaroth away. Gorgaroth wrenched the heavy chains with inhuman strength and the jailer's neck snapped like rotted branches. For the first time in many long months Gorgaroth smiled, a savage and daemonic grin. With a volcanic twist Gorgaroth tightened the rusted chains and ripped in opposite directions. As easily as a child pulls the petals of a flower Gorgaroth tore the heavily-jowled head from its shoulders. Blood spurted thickly onto Gorgaroth and the floor around him. Ignoring the slumping form of the beheaded jailer Gorgaroth took up the gory prize and held it aloft, dark crimson dripping from the ragged head. "For you my Lord, let this be a sacrifice in your name, and let your power fill my limbs!"

QUICK UPDATE:

Having settled into my new apartment, I began setting up my War Room. I have a walk in closet, with plenty of space in it for all my WH stuff. In fact, its funny how things work out because I needed room for all of this stuff and this closet is perfect!

I began setting my entire army out on some shelving. I separated everything into units and grouped together by Core, Special, etc. This will make for quick inventory, and also be easy to see at a glance what is done and what needs done. Now I can work on things unit by unit, everything is at hand and I'm very happy!

Plus unfortunately I'm not playing much at the moment, so having my entire army spread out is nto really an issue. A bonus to this is that I can easily pick and choose my units should I get a game in, placing them in my case as needed!

I just finished the Beast Core choices, next up tonight is Mortal Core, than the rest.

So far I have:
seven 20-man Beast Herds, with FC
seven 10-man Beast Herds, with FC
one 23-man Bestigor unit
one 25-daemon Bloodletter unit

plus I have 30 extra Gors, to use as I see fit. I'm thinking I may make an entire Mortal army, made of Beasts! In other words, I want to be able to use all my Mortal units as Mortal units, but I love Beasts so much that I want to have them double as Mortal units when I feel like playing Mortal armies. Make sense?

So I will have a "Mortal" army led by a Centigor (lord on horse) with "Knights" (my converted Beast Knights) and "Marauder Horsemen" (centigors)...etc...

And so on. I have a lot of work ahead of me!

I have decided to base the entire army as though they were in a snowy, bleak forest, so lots of snow and dead branches and mud! I will be painting the entire army in "natural" colors, although of course they are dedicated to Khorne. Instead of using a ton of red, I will instead use blood to help convey the theme. I want it to look "tasteful" if that makes sense, not just red splashed everywhere! I'll see what I can do.

Lastly I'm going to try to use tattoos to mark out each unit for easy recognition, and on the bases I'm going to use red stripes to denote where each model is from.

Thats it for now!
