How to deal with Dragons?

original thread ↗

You are correct JC, but he didn't want anything to do with a 75 pt model potentially killing his 300 pt lord.  Also, with Gorgers being unbreakable, there is the slight potential that he would get locked up for one turn and countercharged.  Why would he want to risk it, which he didn't have to, but I would of welcomed the chance.  It's about as likely as any of the other scenarios.

Actually tying something up with your gorger(s?) may be one of the better ways, if you can get them into combat.  Good advice, I'll have to remember it.

Thanks,
JC

And if not tying up, if you bring in a couple of gorgers behind your lines, you can at lrast keep the dragon from buring yuor backside all night. If they realy want to avoid the gorgers' combined charge arcs they will have to head in front of your ogres.

I like it.  It reminds me of how my uncle taught me to play chess when I was a kid.  He told me that you wanted to allow your pieces to "dominate" as many spaces on the board as possible and then allow your opponent to make a mistake!

all strategic games apply to all other strategic games - you can learn warhammer lessons playing risk, chess, backgammon, magic:the gathering, etc.  If you really want to improve your skills, give GO a try - its possibly the "best" game invented for encouraging your strategic skills to develop.

@Wildcard,
I've got it :).

I find this thread highly amusing, as in my fluff, my tribe are Dragon hunters by trade (ala Reign of Fire...to hell with you, I watch too many movies and I don't care).

As a general rule of thumb, ignoring it is a fairly reasonable idea. Just keep out of it's way, block it's line of sight with terrain where possible, throw a Gnoblar unit or two at it.

No one has mentioned Giants though. I take a DoW Giant in my Tribe, purely because without Stubborn the Giant cannot perform the main task I delegate for it - holding up units and bashing big Terror causers. A Giant is well capable of killing a Dragon if you roll right, and even if you only get Yell and Bawl you still win by two. A Dragon will be able to tear the ass off a giant in a round or two if it gets to hit first, but that's a turn or two it's not rampaging through your lines eating everything, which leaves the rest of your force to deal with the now severely underequipped army left in the absence of their general and mightiest monster. Sucks to be them.
We're oft to blame in this, 'tis too much proved that with devotion's visage and pious action we do sugar o'er the devil himself...

Ogres can't take a DoW Giant IIRC. We're stuck with the stubbornless slavegiant if you want a (even bigger) big guy.

Corai is right Hades Heartstrings, we're stuck with our own slave.

Sorry to drag this back up, but hopefully we can re-kindle this discussion.

I play my ogres in a campaign, and the other alpha-male dominating the board with me is a dark elf. Now, barring a dragon, there is little he can do against me - unfortunately he knows that, too, and so does bring a dragon.
After my tyrant (which I thought was my one weapon against the beast) nearly died in the first turn thanks to the Cauldron, I had to reconsider.

Now, to me the only feasable option left seems to be a slave giant, and not, like descirbed above, target the dragon, but the weedy elf on top. He'd receive D6 S6 or even 2D S6 hits, be picked up (fairly good chance to stuff him if he has say a lance) or loose combat by 2.
I guess taking care of the lord is only half the problem, but I guess unridden the dragon would be slightly easier to handel, no? Plus the danger to the lord would make him slightly wary - which is good if otherwise it's just ME who has to be wary. :)
Plus, giants are manoevrable (sp?) enough that I can keep him/them in the backfield as a counter-threat to the dragon ...
Any comments on that Great Strategic Plan? :)

Cheers, Mutter

It could work, but I would still be tempted to go a couple gorgers to tie the dragon down and then get off a charge against it with my tyrant or some guts.  Maybe you don't want to concentrate on what one unit or model could do, but rather what combination of units and models would be most effective against the dragon.  Let me know if you have tried something like this and why it did or did not work.

Thanks,
JC
Why?
I don't think my DE opponent would his dragon ever be caught by one, let alone two gorgers - they are unreliable as to when they show up, they come on at the table-edge (where the dragon is unlikely to be), and he can easily outmanouevre (sp?) them and still target his preffered 'victims' ...

I'll update this when I tried the one-two-giant-approach ... :)

Cheers, Mutter
@ Mutter

Use something else then that will tie the dragon up, maybe the slave giant as you suggested.  I was thinking a gorger because of its cheaper points and its ability to stick around in combat for a long time.  While not always coming on when you want, they do come in at a table's edge, which could give you an advantage as I would guess the dragon will try to take you down a flank or get behind you and then work its havoc.  However if your opponent takes his dragon straight up the middle then I agree that gorgers would not do much good.

I guess my main point is that it may take two or three units/models to completly tie down that dragon.  If you think giants then go with them or two groups of guts to go dragon hunitng.  Or maybe a unit of guts with a tyrant who has longstrider?  Not sure, but a combined approach is how I would go.

Thanks,
JC

J.C., I think his point is that a gorger cannot charge on the turn it arrives, and as the dragon has a 20" movement, even if it was running down the lfank it can rapidly redeploy and not be anywhere near the gorger

thanks

Too true :(.   I got his point, but I would still take the risk anyways.  Although I would go for his giant idea first, probably.
