Hey there, just got myself the batallion box, the army book and a hunter. After some reading in the book and looking at pictures I tought of a tribe which is tracking itself. I've some cool Ideas for a story and ready for converting some models. Altough I'm not really sure how to convert them yet, I am sure that I want to make them unique.
Instead of making the 24 gnoblars which would come with the box according to the back I just cutted out all of them and made like 40.
With this new army I want to learn 3 new things. 2 of them come together and are blending and NMM. The 3th thing is converting with greenstuff.
I already painted my first bull but I'm not really happy with it. My techniques need some more work, but most of all I don't like it because it is to plain/normal. The pictures are a bit dark, this is because of an anti-lighting thing, which prevents that my pictures from becoming to light
I'll be working on my story, I hope you got some inspiration or tips for me for what I can do with this unknown tracking.

Hey I got a pet Gnoblar! mmmmmm Gnoblar...

Forgot to post the close up of the banner yesterday.
Working on the NMM ironfist of the second ogre, got some problems with doing the lower parts.
When I get frustrated, I unleash my frustrations on my gnoblars (less painting quality). Want to give them a more snowy look too tough, have to think about that too.
Also made a little list of how I think the army should look like. Lords: Tyrant, 321 -The Tenderiser -Gut Maw -Wyrdstone Necklace -Heavy armour - 2 sword gnoblars, 1 luck gnoblar it could also be that I make a special character
And a WIP of the story: My name is Vargh Gnobsplatter. I'm the Tyrant of the Unknown Tracking Tribe. My story starts long ago when I was just a young bull in the Son of the Mountains Tribe back then. The Hunter of that tribe found some tracks of a group of other invading ogres. They had been plundering our territory for a while. So the Tyrant walked up to the Hunter "Follow 'em, find out whot's Walk'n here. Dunt come back 'till you know what it is" he said. So the Hunter took some of us bulls, and his little group of trappers. There we started following the tracks. In the late afternoons we stopped and builded small encampments to stay over for the night. Also we played games, often at the cost of some gnoblars. During this games I beated up my Crusher, making me the new leader of the bulls.

They must have something to bicker for and most of all, I don't want to spend to much effort in them (40 small annoying thingies, which can't even fight proper )
Very nice paintjob, and the background is intriguing.
Sorry, I'm dutch and don't know what intriguing means, I translated it to dutch with a dictionary but don't know the dutch word neither... It is something like impressive right ?

I think you've really got the blending thing down. The gnoblar skin, ogre pants and ogre skin are all blended very well. the only thing I'm not sold on is the highlights on the ogres man boobs. Are they warpaint for an extremem highlight. If the l;atter something seems a bit off about them,. I like the NMM on the gutplate but it looks like it could sue some more layers/feathering in the future or a wash to bring the layers together a bit more as the differant colours are a little visible right now. Likewise the iroinfist is really coming along but not quite working. Have you seen Vincenti's NMM gnoblog for his Empire Greatswords? They're a great example of NMM silver/steel and I'm sure he'll be willing to give you a few pointers
Thanks Corai

The white stripes on the boobs are warpaint indeed, he also has stripes on his upper arms and one on his head. I gave the second model more like a picture instead of stripes so you won't get confused
I saw Vincenti's greatswords yesterday, the NMM is impresive. I've read a lot (think all of them) of tutorials on the net, but still I'm doing something wrong. And the blending needs some work yes, but I'm getting better *points at the ironfist*.
Will update the story this evening.

Quickly took some foto's before the sun had set, but when you take foto's at sunset they'll get an orange glow. Not really happy with the pictures, but I don't want to keep them from you. It's still WIP, and looks nicer IRL IMO. I'll make new pictures tomorrow with full sunlight. Sorry but no new story part, I painted instead. And btw, I don't paint this fast but I was already started before I started this gnoblog.

That bloke looks brilliant. How did u do the High Elf style armour?
2 Pet Gnoblars! I dub them Itchy and Scratchy, for reasons that are too private to divulge.
Vargh Gnobsplatter03 May 2007
I started out with making a rough triangle shape of greenstuff, and putted that on the ogre. Then I flattened it (some more at the top to make it look likes it goes under the belt). Then I made to sharp cuts to make the final triangle shape and to get rid of the excess greenstuff. After that I pressed the edges down a little bit for the cloth underneath the scale mail. I made the scale mail by following the chaos dwarf video tutorial. Tough next time I'm going to try and make better vertical layers.
Started painting his trousers today. Decided to give it some more layers then the normal ones since it has to win a competition.
Tyrant of the Unknown Tracking Tribe
Vargh Gnobsplatter05 May 2007
Here are some pictures of the trousers which are almost finished. And the skin has had a dwarf flesh basecoat, next step will be a 3:1 , elf flesh : scorched brown mix. (just like the other 2) I was thinking of adding some red to the mix for the shades at the skin, will it look good or should I stick to the brown shades ?
Tyrant of the Unknown Tracking Tribe
Corai05 May 2007
The blending on the pants looks awesome. I'd think some red added to the skin shade would work nicely with the blue pants colour. But I'd keep it quite minimal, more of a ruddy brown/terracotta
Thanks Corai

basecoat storm blue, layer of regel blue, ultramarines blue at the top, mix those 50:50 and paint it between the layers, then 25:75 and do the same. It not that hard if you know how to do it

Painted the scalemail, and the cloth underneath it. I'm rather happy with the NMM of the mail, could be better, but looks good for my standards. funny thing is that the cloth under the mail is painted with spacewolfs grey, but looks like white IRL.

Corai08 May 2007
the scale mail certinaly looksg reat. Possibley your best NMM so far. The SENMM works really well with regimented detail like mail and you've done a great job.
I'm curious, was the skin painted that colour before you stted or do you apply rough, block base colours before giving the model detail?

Me and a friend of mine went to our hobby store. And got ourself a new hobby called Confrontation. But not to much about that, I got some really cool wolfen models and was thinking that they would also make very cool gorgers. http://www.rackham-store.com/boutique/images_produits/FRWFBO01_2.jpg
The tree thingy creature is as high as an ogre, so the wolves are just a bit bigger. I'll make some pictures tomorrow to show the size difference. The bases are only 2mm smaller then the GW bases and I'm not planning on joining tournaments. So what do you guys think ?

(forgot to say, the wolfen are not painted by me. They're painted by profesional painters from Rackham.)
I've a high elf army done in metalic. Then I saw NMM on the internet and tought it looked pretty cool. So I decided to do my next army in NMM aswel, and that turned out to be my ogres
And yes, I'm going to do more mail on my ogres. It is not that hard to make and paint. And really looks great, plus it gives a bit of an elven look to it

Finished the leather parts, and with that the lower body of the crusher (not a really big update). So now there's no excuse left to start with the skin
And here's the pictures of the Wolfes next to my crusher as I promised. They're slightly bigger then ogres. So I think they'll make perfect gorgers, or even yhetees.

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.
And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

Painting my fourth bull, it feels like it's going to bore me (he has nothing special). But it's good to freshen my skill. Going on a holiday tomorrow evening, the stories say that there's a good hobby store in the city near the bungalow so I might get some new paints there (and maybe some brushes).
I'm planning on building a unit filler for my gnoblars, those creatures are irritating. At the moment I use them to unleash my frustration on. Imagine yourself mixing paint, painting a layer, mixing, painting, mixing, painting, mixing, painting, make a mistake, fixing, mixing, painting, etc. After a while it's so nice to pick up a gnoblar, a big brush and just rush the little fellow.
I saw some bretton gnoblars in another log, can't recall whose log it was. But I'm going to steal the idea and get some gnoblars which I'm going to give HE stuff from my bit box.
and an image taken with my cellphone and edited with paint(shame on me x2), so you have something to look at

Weekly issue #1 26-08-08
First of all, I decided to make a major post every week to highlight the things I've done that week. And to show the total progress of my tribe.
As I stated earlier in my log, I went on a holiday last week. And this week was not without thinking of warhammer. In a matter of fact I did some great work. To start, I bought 7 new paints and 3 brushes for just 14 euros!
My holiday was in the middle of a forest, and as I was looking around I found some great scenery stuff around me just waiting for me to pick them up. I got myself some seeds from an unknown tree which make great miniature leaves. I'm going to use these to make bases with an autumn feeling/look. And I found some grass which looks just like miniature trees! young trees though, but still. (I think they will do great on an ogre base).
After looking at this pictures I realized I should stop making pictures with my cell phone and get a decent camera to get you up to date in style. With pictures who are worth the miniature. But until then I'll leave you with this crappy quality, and this wip picture of my upcoming bull. (working on the skin atm)
Tyrant of the Unknown Tracking Tribe
Reg0626 Aug 2008
Great looking bulls- I love your style. While the faux leaves look great, and should work perfectly I'm not too sure about the grass. I imagine it will dry up and break off, or become gross somehow.

Well no posts this week
I did made some progress on my 4th bull though. After going wild when painting the skin of my ogre (I've always hated it) I decided it to *beep* it and went dry brushing (I'm not keen on the look of it). But it turned out pretty cool, and with some warpaint added I can live with the effect. Although I've to stay sharp and not loosen my painting skills on this army.
I tried to make some pictures, and was successful, but the camera saves the pictures on a xd card, and I've only got a sd slot in my laptop. My girlfriend said we would have a cable laying around but I couldn't find it anywhere. Therefore I can not post any pictures of my bull for you guys.
Oh, before I forget to mention. I did a part of the ironfist, and I think the NMM effect is astonishing!
Tomorrow I'm starting a 3 day communication course, and after the 7th my own painting contest is starting. Giving me a hard time finishing this last bull.

Well, it sure seems that my weekly issues didn't work out.
Anyhow, here's an update. Nearly got my first 6 ogre bulls from the battalion box done. (Got it like 2 years ago). Just one to go in the painting contest, and finish 2 off and I'll be done
I've puzzling over a 500pts HE/Ogre list for some quick fun games. I'm not yet sure though if I take an unpimped mage or a commander with 25pts of items.
15 x HE Spearmen 165pts
10 x HE Archers 120pts
3 x Ogre Bulls 105pts 3 x Ironfists 15pts
1 x HE commander 70pts 25pts items 25pts OR 1 x HE mage 95pts ------------------------------- Total 500pts
So what do you think?
