Ortac's Purple Moons

Hi there,

I'm new to Ogres, and thought i'd use this great site to document the building of my army. I've been looking around for a couple of weeks, and have enjoyed reading some of the other blogs.

I haven't got much as yet, but with almost every army I make, I buy too much and then painting it becomes too daunting. So i've set myself a limit on not buying much until I've painted what I already have. I don't know if it'll work, but it's worth a shot.

But anyway, as the name implies the current name for my army is the 'Purple Moons.' I don't know if I like it, but that's their symbol, so it works for now.

I've got a few ideas for background, but I haven't put any of it down yet. The main thing is that they have purple tattoos, are lead by a former Maneater, and they have Night Goblins allies instead of Gnoblars. I really don't like the Gnoblar models, so i'm just using Night Goblins as 'counts as' Gnoblars.

So here's my first unit of bulls. They are an absolute joy to paint, i've haven't enjoyed painting something like this for a while. I did use a lot of drybrushing on the skin, but I think it suits Ogres, as I can't imagine them having silky baby soft skin. It's also really quick and painless.



Comments and criticism are appreciated. I'm planning to tackle my GoblarTrappers next, they're going to be made from Night Goblin netters and archers.

Very nice. The skin and metals look nice and the purple warpaint provides a nice contrast to the skin. Nice bases as well. Good job.

I've just painted them white for now, but intend to but some snow flock on them. I've tried messing around with home-made snow, but have found it to be way too hard.

I've got another pic of the bulls, so you can see the tatts and bases properly.



I've started working on the Goblar Trappers today, though i'm not sure what to do with their paint scheme. I'm going to do the regular (gnoblar fighters) Night Gobs in dark purple robes, but i need my trappers to stand out. I'm thinking of dark grey or white robes, but i'm not sure. Any ideas?

They look great, I think the purple warpaint/tatoos are fantastic. they've been highlighted in just the right way to make them seem like part of the skin/model rather than just put on top, the colour also compliments your earthy palette very well. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this gnoblog. For the fighter/trapper divide, why not save Night Goblin netters for the trappers (they're certainly armed right!).

Those are some awesome ogres and a cool idea.  I agree that the name needs work but the theme is sweet, Id love to see a butcher done up like a night gobbo shaman

maybe some giant cave squigs kept like regular night gobbos keep regular (if there is such a thing) squigs. You could esasily use some giant squigs as yhetees and , dare I say it, some even more gargantuan ones as rhinox riders! I like the name as it is, simple and to the point, just like ogres!

Those are some cool looking ogres§ I love the drybrushed ogre skin and the purple tattoos/warpaint look great. Nice idea to use night goblins as gnoblars.


I would suggest to paint your trappers the same way as you would paint your fighters. Just paint their robes purple. I think a consistent use of colors unify the army, making it look cooler on tabletop. By using netters, you already have them standing out from normal night gobbos. If you want to use another color to make them stand out from regular goblins, I´d suggest to keep it subtle.

By the way, you could use some squigs as hunting dogs for the trappers.

Hey guys, thanks for the positive feedback. i am really pleased how the purple warpaint has turned out, I was a bit worried at first because i thought it might be tough to paint, but it was actually pretty easy. Gotta love Vallejo!

Thanks for the ideas, I really like the squig idea with the trappers, I might try that. And I also decided to paint my trappers like i'll paint my normal fighters, see below. You only get 3 netters in a box, but I think the guy with a club, a guy with a sickle and 3 guys with bows gives the idea of scouts or hunters.





I'm quite happy with these guys, though they look a little like a bunch of Green Goblin (from Spider-man) wannabes. But that's ok.

I'm also making my butcher a little more wizard-like, I'm giving him a pointy hat, and his bangstick is like a wizard's staff. But now I think of it, it might be cool to put a little moon on the end of it.

Giant squigs as yetis is also a nice idea, as this army will be based in the World's Edge mountains, and I don't see how yetis would get all the way over there. But the idea of sculpting them all is a little scary...

I've also thought about putting some robes on Ogres, but I don't want to do it on a large scale. I may try it with my second Butcher, as I'm planning to convert him from a basic bull. I had a thought of doing a Maneater, but i'm not likely to use maneaters in my army.

Love the 'trappers'. They do have a strong green gobbo vibe but I like it, and the models you've collected definatley look like they would fill the role of trappers. Looking forward to seeing your wizardy butcher

I just saw the new Giant Squig today (this guy). I'm not hugely impressed with it, but it's ok. I'm actually thinking of using it as a Gorger. I had thought of using them as Yhetees, but I don't think they'd be unique enough to have a unit of three. What do you guys reckon? It'll be purple, of course...

I'm also tossing up other ideas for Yhetees, i've thought of using the new trolls, for instance. I'm not a huge fan of the official models, and they'll fit my fluff a lot better. Are there any other existing models that you can think of that would fit the bill?

Anyway, still working on my Ironguts, and i've just picked up some NG bosses and some squig hunters. I'm going to use a couple of squigs with my trappers, and the spare one will go with my Ironguts standard bearer, as a stand-in for the lookout Gnoblar.

I'm going to put a NG boss n my tyrant's base. He'll act as a sword Gnoblar, but it'll show that the leadership of the army is somewhat influenced by the Gobs. I'm also using the Paymaster maneater as my Tyrant, I have to work on removing the abacus Gnob from his shoulder, and give him the giant hammer from the Ironguts.

Hopefully I'll have some new pics soon.

I think you're right that the new trolls could make great yheti models. The great cave squig could find a use as a gorger, but I agree that it's not exactly a great model. Maybe combine it with gobbla and a few other squigs on a 40mm base to make a squig swarm for a gorger?

mmmm... my OG army is going to have some of them trolls(not so sure about the warboss on squig mind) Why not have a butcher with a big cauldron full of fungus beer? Night gobbos drink it before every battle, making the paranoid but with faster reflexes. (so they dodge arrows, but run away if they fink dere sumat behind dat pebble, reddy to eat us all up...)

I love the Bulls and Trappers: u are an exemplary painter.

Perhaps as a really advanced modelling challenge, u could make a unit of Ogre Fanatics counting as Ironguts.

Thanks guys, the positive feedback is very motivating. I had thought of doing something like a fanatic, but i'm not really sure what yet. And yes, a whole unit would be very challenging.

I might wait and see what the giant squig looks like in person before I get one. Sometimes a bad paint job can make a model look worse. And I do really like those new trolls, they might make good Yhettees.

I'm about halfway through my ironguts, but I thought I'd add some pics of my heroes so far.

Here is my tyrant, who is obviously a maneater. I spent a great deal of time modifying parts of him and ripping them off again, as I couldn't get anything to look good. So aside from getting rid of the gnoblar and rebuilding the collar, he's au naturalle. I could give him a hood, but it's such a great mini as it is I don't want to ruin it. I had to build his base up a little so the Gobbo would have room. He'll count as two sword gnoblars. The height I feel also makes him a bit more grand and leadery.



And here's my butcher. He's got a wizard-NG hat (or, a smurf hat) and he's got a little cape that i haven't really perfected, but I think i'm going to leave it. He's also got a wizard's staff that he uses as a bangstick. The idea is that he got the staff, and he started to think of himself as a wizard, so he got a hat and a cape to look the part. I plan on topping this staff with an actual gemstone. A bit tacky, but it's all good fun.

Yeah, the Gobbo-Paymaster combo rocks. The Butcher is good too apart from the cape. One idea, that kinda reinforces the jokiness about the model, is that u give the Butcher a ridiculously small cape. The Butcher thinks he needs a cape to be a Wizard, but only having Goblins to nick from he couldn't find one the right size.

I've finally finished my Ironguts. To tell the truth, I didn't enjoy painting these as much as the Bulls or Gobs, I think there is too much metal on them. Perhaps I'll try a different approach on my second unit, maybe i'll forego the helmets, as the faces are my favourite part of the regular Ogres, and Either the helmets or the arms tend to obscure this. They came out looking alright, but I think I could do better. I definitely rushed them toward the end just so they'd be over and done with, and I probably should go back and neaten them after I've done something else. I'm quite happy with the purple pants though.

I photographed the banner separately as he's too tall for a group shot!



And here's a shot of everything together. I'm very happy with how the purple is really tieing them all together, I had doubts about the Gobs and Ogres looking too different, but I think it works.

And thanks for the suggestion about the butcher, Ghworg, I think the cape does need some work. And i'm looking forward to painting the tyrant, I just rigged up a system to paint the two guys separately, so I might get onto these two next.

I really like the purple.  You are right.  Vallejo rules.   I 'm using their oranges for my Burning Maws and they are great.

The use of the Night Goblin moon on the Irongut banner was a great idea too.

I'm really glad the purple worked out like it did, and thanks for your support! I chose it because it's the only colour I haven't tackled on a large scale (I only bought some late last year) and I wanted to see if I could get it to work. And it seems I've passed.
And there's actually a fluff reason behind the frequency of purple too, but i'll explain that in the background story i'm writing. It has a lot to do with why there are so many uneaten Goblins in my army, and no Gnoblars.

Related to that, I think i'll stick to "Purple Moons" (thanks for the vote of support, Corai!). It's simple and self-explanatory, but that's what Ogres are all about. I can imagine them going "Wot are we called? Check out our tats and banner, numbbum!" It's also worked out quite well that Night Gobbos have so many spare moons on their sprues, it's made it very easy to pilfer them and put them on my Ogres.

I've started assembling my second unit of bulls, and I got some Leadbelchers today. Though on that, are you supposed to get two of the sprues with the standard on it, and no "command sprue" with the bellower arm and the different heads? I know you can't use the bellower arm, but all the rest of the stuff is good. Like most of you, I now have many, many banner that will go unused--maybe i'll make some objective counters out of them or something.  Anyway, I liked that you got more than 4 Leadbelcher heads, some of the ones without tapers are going to find homes amongst my bulls. They've got a lot of character, and I really like that one that is a variation of the standard bellower head, the one with his tongue poking out. i think he'll be the bellower in one of my bull units. I'm a little peeved, though, that I have to carve a Gnoblar off a shoulder, but thems the breaks.

Anyway, i'm still working on my Tyrant, and if I can get enough done, i'll get my first 1000 point game in next Tuesday.

Love the army! Purple is one of my favourite colours and you have pulled it off perfectly!

I had an idea you may want to use for Yhettes. If you got some spider riders from BfSP (you could get them off Battle Wagon Bitz) you could put a few onto Ogre bases and count them as Yhettes.

My reasoning behind this is that they are spiders so can climb walls and move quickly and they project sticky webs making them harder to hit

I also think a Squig herd as a gorger is a great idea, or maybe just a giant one, a la Avian.

The painting has slowed down a bit, I was on holidays up until two days ago and it's harder to find time at night to paint. I somehow need to make up a portable paint desk that I can move into the living room. I've been doing lots of assembling though, as that's easy enough to do in the living room whilst keeping an eye on my daughter.

I have successfully gotten rid of that Gnoblar on the leadbelcher's shoulder, though. It was much easier than getting the gnoblar off my Maneater, I can tell you that much...

Thanks for the spider idea (I have some, so it's a possibility), though i'm not sure that it will cut it in a tourney... i'm going to look at the Wendigo models from Crocodile games for now I think. I'd also thought of some weird spider-drawn warmachine that could double as a Scrappalauncher.

In other news, i've been planning to take these guys to a GT in August (i'll get thumped, but it'll be fun), though i've come up against some resistance regarding the use of the 'counts as' rule. I've emailed GW Australia, and hope that I can at least use my Night gobs as Gnoblars in units. If not, i'll have to drop them for the GT. But i'm quite adamant at using them in non-GW tournaments and in friendly games, most of the other TOs around here are a lot more relaxed, and I know they'll allow the Wendigo models too.

I'm not sure about what to do with the gorger, but I think i'll get a GW one just so I can use it in tournies, but i'll look at the giant squig when it comes out.

Yep, that's the idea. But I don't know if I like the Giant Squig yet. I think having a Squiglauncher would be good but it should be drawn by a Squig: its the best equivalent for a Rhinox in temperament.

Also, the Ironguts are looking fabulous, as is the whole of ur army. Keep it up!

Something interesting I saw on the Warhammer Forum which may be of use to you is the Epic Scale Forge World Gargantuan Squiggoth. It looksjust like the 40K scale one but is only 70mm long. Perfect size to mount an ogre on for someu unique rhinox riders or scrap launchers

Thanks guys, i really appreciate the ideas. I might have a go at a squig-pulled squig launcher. I imagine it could be a very zany model.

In the meantime, I painted the Goblin boss for my tyrant's base. I've started the Tyrant, and i think it probably won't take as long as this guy did... and all for a 10 point piece of wargear!
His name is Krezik, and he's the boss of my Night Goblins. He has a fair bit to say about what the group does in general, as he's become an expert at manipulating my Tyrant. But unfortunately they can tend to argue, so I'm thinking of taking the Mawseeker big name to reflect this, with the stupidity reflecting the bickering and the toughness reflecting that you are fighting two people. He'll count as two sword gnoblars too.


He's obviously not stuck on his own base yet, I thought it would be much easier to paint him separately. Hopefully I'll get my tyrant (Ortac) finished soon. C&C welcome.

Edit: looking at the robes on the photo, I think i need to neaten up those highlights a little.

Cool paintwork and nice fluff. Also a nice idea to reflect the piece of fluff (night gobbo boss arguing with tyrant) in game terms (mawseeker bigname).

Nice fluffy use of wargear. It's something we can't ofte ndo with ogres limited selection of kit! I love the gobbo, the painting is really specvtactualr, the purple and pale green work great together and I can't wait to see him beside your tyrant

Well, it's saying something when the Sword Gobbo is taking more time than the Tyrant.

How foolish I was. 

I took me longer to get the skin tone right than it took me to paint that entire Goblin! This is the first metal Ogre I've painted, and he's a very different beast to the plastic ones. The creases in the skin are a lot shallower, so you have to be a lot more subtle with the shading and highlighting. I also got a new Bleached Bone which has been causing problems--I had a citadel one before and it was very dried out, so i always watered it down heaps. But then i got a Vallejo one, and for some reason i thought it would need to be watered down just as much. But no, it didn't. It took me a suprisingly long time to figure that out!  But i'm happy with it now, and have done all the skin and rust, and have gone back over the black where I was messy with the other paint. So hopefully the next bit won't take too long, I really want to see these two guys together.

lol, yes there is a bit of a difference with the metal ogres when you come to painting them (that being said I really enjoy the metal ones as they bring out the best in me, needing to really owrk to get the skin right). I'm looking forward to seing your two guys together!

Something interesting I saw on the Warhammer Forum which may be of use to you is the Epic Scale Forge World Gargantuan Squiggoth. It looksjust like the 40K scale one but is only 70mm long. Perfect size to mount an ogre on for someu unique rhinox riders or scrap launchers

Thanks guys, i really appreciate the ideas. I might have a go at a squig-pulled squig launcher. I imagine it could be a very zany model.

In the meantime, I painted the Goblin boss for my tyrant's base. I've started the Tyrant, and i think it probably won't take as long as this guy did... and all for a 10 point piece of wargear!
His name is Krezik, and he's the boss of my Night Goblins. He has a fair bit to say about what the group does in general, as he's become an expert at manipulating my Tyrant. But unfortunately they can tend to argue, so I'm thinking of taking the Mawseeker big name to reflect this, with the stupidity reflecting the bickering and the toughness reflecting that you are fighting two people. He'll count as two sword gnoblars too.


He's obviously not stuck on his own base yet, I thought it would be much easier to paint him separately. Hopefully I'll get my tyrant (Ortac) finished soon. C&C welcome.

Edit: looking at the robes on the photo, I think i need to neaten up those highlights a little.

Cool paintwork and nice fluff. Also a nice idea to reflect the piece of fluff (night gobbo boss arguing with tyrant) in game terms (mawseeker bigname).

Nice fluffy use of wargear. It's something we can't ofte ndo with ogres limited selection of kit! I love the gobbo, the painting is really specvtactualr, the purple and pale green work great together and I can't wait to see him beside your tyrant

How foolish I was. 

I took me longer to get the skin tone right than it took me to paint that entire Goblin! This is the first metal Ogre I've painted, and he's a very different beast to the plastic ones. The creases in the skin are a lot shallower, so you have to be a lot more subtle with the shading and highlighting. I also got a new Bleached Bone which has been causing problems--I had a citadel one before and it was very dried out, so i always watered it down heaps. But then i got a Vallejo one, and for some reason i thought it would need to be watered down just as much. But no, it didn't. It took me a suprisingly long time to figure that out!  But i'm happy with it now, and have done all the skin and rust, and have gone back over the black where I was messy with the other paint. So hopefully the next bit won't take too long, I really want to see these two guys together.

lol, yes there is a bit of a difference with the metal ogres when you come to painting them (that being said I really enjoy the metal ones as they bring out the best in me, needing to really owrk to get the skin right). I'm looking forward to seing your two guys together!

Well, I had another crack at my Tyrant and the second part was nowhere near as hard. I kinda rushed through the amulet, though, and I think it needs some more work. What do people think of the green? I did that in case I wanted to take the Jade Lion, but I don't know that it fits. I was thinking of maybe doing orange.


Also, does anyone have much experience with varnish? I want to protect this guy's paint job (and all my metal minis) as the paint does wear away with use. I've tried paint on matt varnish before, but i've not had much luck with it. Does anyone have any good product that they've used?

wow, he looks amazing I agree that the green (whilst well done) doesn't realy sit with the colour of the rest of the model. could you maybe add some bluei n and make it a more turquoise or jade like colour to tie it in more with the cold skin and purples? The metals look great as well.

For varnishing, I beleieve the best method is to spray on some gloss varnish to seal the model and protect it best, then hit this with a couple of coats of matt varnish, again from an aerosol can (I believe Testors dullcote comes highly reccommended) to kill all the shine

The tyrant looks great, and that maneater, besides being the best of the sculpts, has a really nice head!  Never realized it til painted ... and I still dig that goblin hero like crazy.  Also, I like the green amulet myself, but I would have to say it does get a little lost in the darkness of the rest of the model ...

If you wanted to change the amulet but keep it a a jade colour maybe do it like your gobbos skin? This would tie the two models together too.

Well, I had my first game tonight, and it went like a first game between two people playing their first games with new armies!

We forgot rules and misinterpreted everywhere, but it was still fun and we both learned a lot.

My opponent had:
A hero with +1 to hit and +1 strength, and his unit had the oathstone and couldn't move. I knew that, but he didn't, so that messed him around when i pointed it out!
A slayer hero with double strength against T5 or higher and 'always strikes first'
A unit of 15 warriors with FC
a unit of 10 miners with FC and a steam drill
a unit of 10 handgunners with FC
a cannon with an engineer

It's not much of a story to tell, it was a bit ramshackle, but here's what I learned:

*Don't charge a unit of miners with your Bruiser by himself. All it took were a couple of misses, and then he had -4 combat resolution on me, so I got run down.
*This happened because I was 5 wide with my ironguts, and charged him out because i didn't want to charge two units simultaneously (the miners were right next to the oathstone unit, which i didn't want to touch because it wasn't a threat--good old immobile units!). Keep these units 3 wide in this sort of situation!
*Combining charges is great, though it doesn't work as well against the stupid oathstone. And it's also hard to do and requires some careful planning.
*Keep your butcher out of units once most of the shooting is neutralised. I kept on charging him into things when I could have been enhancing my own units, and he's not that flash in combat.
*Avoid slayer characters with your giant. Although i didn't have a lot of choice here, as he would have caught up with me sooner or later. I can see the value of having at least one unit of leadbelchers to keep lone characters from being a big threat. Yes, the slayer absolutely caned my giant. Frosty took four wounds, yelled and bawled, then got killed in the next turn.
*Butchers are great when your opponent can't dispel to save his life! The bangstick went off every time, and along with a bonesmasher spell (or whatever it's called), took care of the nasty slayer.
*Trappers are great for simply hiding behind enemy lines and waiting for enemies to flee through them. I got rid of the handgunners this way!
*Remember the 'autobreak when outnumbered by a fear-causing opponent' rule. I didn't until half way through the game, but when I did, it was a godsend against all that high Dwarven leadership.
*Trappers have bicker. I completely forgot about it, and didn't test for it once. I always remembered stupidity checks for my tyrant, but I passed all three of them before he ran away.

So yes, it was a fun game but very messy. In the end I had one unit of bulls, the trappers and my unharmed butcher, and he had his lord and about 4 dwarves. So we just called it a draw. I look forward to having another game, I quite enjoy 1000 point games. I'll try and get my Leadbelchers in action, though, as I don't think the Giant was very helpful, and maybe give my tyrant something more dangerous than a great weapon.

It's been a bit slow of late, I blame my four-week-old daughter mainly.

She's having a bad week, so i'm spending a lot of time looking after her and my wife. But that's all good, she's been a lot more settled over the last couple of days so I was able to do what I've been meaning to do for a long time... and clean up my hobby room. It took an entire afternoon, but now everything is sorted out and labelled, and my main hobby desk is clear. I also got a new painting desk that has wheels, and I have permission to wheel it next to the living room so I can paint and still be part of the family. I received a lot of dirty looks whenever I used to duck off to the hobby room (our garage), but i'll only need to go in their for conversion work now, so hopefully i'll get a bit more done.

But I took the opportunity to do a little converting on my nice clean desk. I've given my NG trappers furry collars so they all stand out a bit, and this will hopefully make them different enough so I can use them at the GT. I'm still waiting for the green stuff to dry, but I should paint one and get a pic tomorrow. I also made a new trapper out of one of the squig herders, and made a 'Groinbiter' out of the second bigboss i got with Krezik the sword goblar.

I also got a gorger, and went about fixing his head. The main thing that bugged me was that the lower jaw reminded me too much of the old Ogres, and didn't really fit in with the new Ogres, so I fixed it up a bit. I'll get some pics once he's painted.

So until then!

All sounds good. Looking forward to seeing the modified gorger head, and how you've gone about adapting yet more of the excellant new gobbo range to your ogres cause!

I'm quite happy with how the collars turned out, the other three didn't paint up as well but i'm going to have another go at them. But note to all: it's much easier converting stuff *before* you paint it.

And here's my gorger undercoated:



As you may or may not be able to see, I simply cut his jaw off directly below his top teeth, cut out the middle section above his bottom teeth, and glued them back together with some GS to fill the gaps. Again, i'm quite happy with it, and I'll hopefully have him painted soon.

The Trappers are superb Ortac, and I like the simple effectiveness of ur conversion on the Gorger: makes the brute look like he's on the way to get monumentally furious.

The Trappers are great, the collars came out very well.

I agree, those trappers are excellant and the fur collars look as though they should ahve always been there! The gorger conversion looks really good too. Closing the mouth definatley improves the model (although I'm still not sold on the pose ) I look forward to seeing it painted. Is the gorger going to get purple warpaint too?

I had another game tonight against a Night Goblin army--must be a neighbouring rival tribe.

I subbed out my giant and trappers and replaced him with 2 Leadbelchers and a Gorger, which was a much better selection of units.

But basically, I got owned. He outnumbered me 145 to 15, and had twice as many units. This wasn't a huge problem in theory, as half of the units didn't charge me (good old fear) or I managed to deplete them or slow them down with magic (go braingobbler!), shooting and the Gorger, but the one that did get close utterly raped me. I couldn't do enough damage to the 40-odd gobbos that made it (I did have some bad rolling), and I got killed on ranks and outnumber. One unit basically trounced through all three of my Ogre units, one after the other. It was still a great, whacky game, and I had a ball.

This just proved more than anything that i really need a flank charge. It's like causing 4 wounds without rolling a dice! (though I'm sure you all know this, but it's new to me!). So really I need to figure out how to set up to get this to work.

But on the plus side, my Gorger stopped an entire unit of 40 spearmen from doing anything from turn 2 onward, and my butcher took a unit of spider riders, a unit of squig hoppers and another unit of 40 gobbos completely out of the game with one thing or another. I can see how they're both extremely valuable units. My Butcher was also on fire with dispelling, the only thing that my opponent got off was his bound spell. I'm not sure if the trappers would have helped in this game, but I didn't have anything to drop to add them in. They'll definitely be in at 1500 points, though.

I'm starting to see the value of the Jade lion, though, I failed my lousy stupidity twice. I don't think it would have saved the game, but it did make it much harder when him and his bulls couldn't do anything for two turns.

Anyway, complete thrashings are great to receive, as I feel like I learn more from them than when I win. Every mistake burns home so much more, but you tend to gloss over them a bit when you manage to get a draw or win.

I need to do some painting now, i'm not buying any more till i've painted this lot! Well, at least half of them.

I'm wondering if u use Yhetees? 'cos if u do, they would a good solution to ur flanking woes.

That's a good idea actually, the problem is that the Yhetee models are so lame. I picked up one of the Yhetees yesterday, i'm going to see what I can do. I'd like to get some of those Wendigo models for friendly games, but I want to use this army in tournaments so if I want to use Yhetess, i'll need the official models as well.

Interesting trivia: In Germany, Ogre Kingdoms are called "Ogerreiche." I prefer that name, it sounds cool.

Anyway...

I've finished painting my second unit of bulls, so I'm going to get to work on my leadbelchers next.

Here's my second unit of Bulls. These guys were a bit elusive to photograph, it seems i'm better off taking pics in the morning than in the afternoon. But this is the best one:



I really like the Bellower's head from the Leadbelcher's sprue, and it seemed a waste to use such a cool head on a unit that already has enough cool heads (so to speak). Also, i'd like to keep my Bulls as unique as possible, though i'm going to have to repeat some heads on my third unit. I just don't like a couple of the bearded heads, or the Bellower's head from the Bull sprue. I also tried a weapon swap, using one of the left-handed clubs on the right hand.

Cheers Ghworg! It's been bugging me that all these guys have been languishing for so long, so it's great to do some more work on them. I'm not too far off finishing my leadbelchers at the moment, and i've done all the converting on my Yhetees and have built my second unit of Ironguts.

I had completely forgotten how to paint Ogre flesh, though, so that took a bit of experimenting. I think i've got it right now, though my 3rd leadbelcher is going to be a bit darker than the others. The thing that annoys me is a sent a PM to someone describing in detail how I do it, but I didn't save it!

I've been playing around with a list, and i'm having trouble filling up the last 100 points or so. The main problem is I don't really want to buy any more models yet! I only have to buy two giant squigs (for my gorgers) and de-naff those (big job!), and make my second butcher (and buy a NG shaman), but other than that i've got nothing else to make or buy. So that's a reasonable amount of stuff to paint before the end of September.

I'm thinking of giving my second butcher a Tenderizer for a bit of a laugh, and to fill up the points. Nobody expects the butcher to have a tenderiser!

OK, for some reason I hadn't gotten around to reading this log, but now I have I can safely say that these guys are awesome! I really like the way you've done the purples, very vibrant. The use of Night Gobbos instead of Gnoblars is working out very well too.

Great to have you back Ortac, the Moons are one of my favorite ogre armies I've seen.  The giant squigs sound great, and I love the tenderizing butcher, that's just brutal

For the leadbelchers, I bet when you have snowed the bases to match the rest of the army, you will find the colours instantly get more definition, and they will look brighter without any more work required.

Well, I've decided to have a crack at my 3rd Butcher, and would like to hear some ideas from you guys.

Basically I want to make a Troll Butcher. I'd give him the Halfling Cookbook to represent his greater intestinal fortitude, but i'm struggling with how to change him a bit, and to explain his presence. One idea I had was something like a crown of sorcery, like that Ork character had, and that was around I think 4th/5th ed, to explain magic powers and greater intelligence. Or some kind of blessing of the maw. But i'm not really sure, and would like some feedback on the idea, or any ideas to make him more Butcher-y

Maybe you could do a half-troll half-ogre. Trollish reproduction hasn't been touched on yet (for which I am thankful), so you have free reign. It'll explain the ogre qualities (gut magic, gut) well, and explain why he doesn't have regen or MR.

How about a Troll that got caught up in a magical backlash from a headbanging Night Goblin Shaman, the mind of the shaman displacing that of the Troll. Having found out he's unable to access the waagh, he took to worshiping the Maw instead (like your other Night Gobbo Butcher). Unfortunately due to the amount of crap he ingests to do his spells, it overloads the Troll's own regeneration system as it struggles to cope with his gorging - being a Troll, he has to do a lot more than an Ogre to appease the Maw.

Or it could be just a really ugly Ogre Butcher, who has eaten so many Trolls that he started to look like them

Oh yeah Reg06, it's only Stone Trolls that have MR - 'normal' Trolls don't - so that's no problem

Hmmm, I don't know about the 'troll as butcher'-idea. If you plan on using the troll, you could give it a gut or perhaps you could make a troll with some goblin handlers. But still...maybe it's my limited imagination, but I just don't see a troll doing something intelligent as using magic.

But remember, Trolls and the like are creatures warped by Chaos already. They would be most in tune with the flow of Chaos naturally, so maybe its not too much of a stretch to think of a half troll/half ogre, or something equally repugnant, LOL, that could have enough semi-intelligence to throw some magic around.

Well, if it's a greenskin (which is probably is) it reproduces via spores. And with all the chaos energy going around the spores could infect a ogre/young ogre/fetus and make the ogre grow trollish.

Thanks for the input guys, current situation is that I have the Troll I want and I've come up with the idea that a Trollguts spell went horribly awry, and the Maw backlash resulted in a literal version of 'you are what you eat.' I hope to get cracking on this guy soon!

And in other news, my game club had a fundraiser painting comp recently, where you brought along models for whatever GW system you liked, paid a small fee per model, and everyone there on the night voted for their favourite. I didn't get time to do anything new, so I took along an old marine as well as Ortac and Krezik, my tyrant and his goblin boss, mainly just to support the event and my club. But Ortac and Krezik came through for the win! They're a great team.

The guy who does the Avatars of War minis has done some GW work in the past (IIRC), and now does GW compatible (not official in any way) minis. He does very nice versions of GW models.

Ortac- That fat gobbo is a beautiful mini. Use it. If I had a reason to get one, I would in a heartbeat.

Very nice army, I suggest however that you add a bit of yellow to the color schemes.
In an army with purple as a principle color, adding some yellow will make your troops come out.

This technique is useful for showing of your characters.

For example, in a clan pestiliens that I'm planning to create in the far future, the slaves are white,
the core is green, and the leaders are red.

These models are all great! And I'd love to see that AoW goblin kind as the butcher carried by an ogre - it would just fit a bit better in my mind.
