BigD´s Angry Fists & The gnoblar revolution

Hi all,

I´ve been playing an undead army for quite some years and although I thoroughly enjoy gaming with them, it was time for a new army. But which army? Much soulsearching followed and I was lured towards the putrid powers of nurgle, but in the end I realised the answer was slapping me in the face...OGRES. Of course. An army with cool ogre models, completely different from undead, great fluff, funny gnoblar models. It all became clear, my second warhammer army would be ogres.

Now all I had to do now was to find a theme for my army. This site proved to be a valuable source of inspiration, I was toying with the idea of starting a nurgle ogre warband, but when I read the White Dwarf article about the gnoblar armylist, I knew my theme had to be gnoblars. My tribe of dog-of-war ogres want to save their strength to bash heads for their paymasters. In order to save their strength, they rely on their gnoblar servants (just an excuse for my ogres to act like lazy gits), so they are less likely to smash a gnoblar when they feel like it. When my army grows I´ll flesh out the fluff.

I´ve been painting a test model (not very neatly, hence the small, blurry pic) to try out some color schemes.

After some experimenting, I chose regal blue as my main color. I firmly believe in a limited palette to unify the army, so all my models will include some blue. The skin of my ogres will be grey to complement the blue.

Here´s the humble beginnings of my all conquering tribe of ogres. I´m quite happy with the way it turned out, because it´s the first time I´ve painted such a large area of skin

@ Blu Blu: I´m planning to paint all the whole army to the same standard. It might take a while though, the bull took around 6 hours.

@Kyte: Not a bad idea at all. I might have a Reuben Kyte on a base with a bruiser or maneater (this should, of course, be Thrug the Deaf, the maneater who accompanied Kyte on his journey down Ivory Road in White Dwarf 302). The Angry Fist tribe appealed to me because the army book said that the tribe is the most sophisticated tribe of ogres. It offers nice conversion options for Ogre-style imperial technology.


I should have finished a whole bull unit at the end of coming week. Nothing fancy, just a unit of bulls with iron fists with full command and, to keep in fluff, some gnobs on the bases. To give some more character to this unit, I´ll have an old ogre veteran with wooden leg as the crusher.

Although I'd debate your choice of full command in bulls units, the mdoel looks really good. The skin tone is very nice and I couldn't agree more about the idea of having a unifying colour scheme to make the army look complete. I'll be following the gnoblog with interest, are we going to see some gnobbos before long then?

Thanks for the compliment on the skintone. I´m happy with the way the skintone turned out. I know that a full command of bulls isn´t the best thing to do, pointwise. I especially believe a crusher isn´t worth its points. I take a full command for aesthetic reasons; it just looks cool to have a full command in a unit.

After the bulls, I´ll start on a unit of gnobs (but to stay in fluff, I´ll also have some gnoblar servants on the bases of the bulls as well...so more gnobs will be featured on this page soon)

 I've finished some bulls last week:



and here's the crusher of the unit: Ol' Brog Headtaker. Fluffwise, he's an old ogre, veteran of many battles (he misses an eye and leg), who has gained quite reputation in the old world. The empire even put a price on his head. Needless to say, this makes Brog immensly proud. He even has a boast-gnoblar walking around with his wanted-posters (I have no idea what the proper english description for this is...but you get the idea)!

@Corai: I´m glad you mentioned the green of the gnoblars as opposed to the natural tones. This was exactly the contrast I was looking for. I´m happy to see that someone else noticed it as well

Because I forgot to take a frontal pic of Brog, I´ll post one now. I also finished the standard bearer. I´m not entirely happy with the fist. I might repaint it slightly to make it look more like a primitive cave-drawing. Maybe someone has a good suggestions for that?


Next in the pipeline is a unit of gnoblar fighters, to stay in fluff with my gnob+theme. I´m playing with the idea of using a unit filler for this as well. Maybe use the halfling hotpot manned by gnoblars, or a couple of gnoblars trying to operate an imperial handgun. I´m not sure yet.

I agree, the freehand o nthe fist looks amazing. I'd be warey of tryng to make a primitive looking banner, as inevitabley, primitive/tribal freehand just winds up looking like bad freehand and you're clearly not bad at it!

Oke then, Corai and Gorg. I might leave the fist that way than. I guess I´ll try some practice runs of a primitive fist on a scrap of paper then and see how it looks, before even thinking of altering the banner. Thanks for the tip, Corai, it sounds like a good argument not to make the fist look more primitive.

Sorry Jimmy, I posted my previous post, without finishing my answer on how I painted the skin. Here´s the rest. After the basecoat, I start shading down the model. First I do the light shades (simply adding a bit of black to the basecoat) and gradually add more black for the deeper recesses. Then I add some skull white to the basecoat to do a highlight on the raised area´s of the skin and add some more white to the first highlight color to give the the facial area an extra highlight.

U are an awesome painter. I especially love that Boasting-Gnoblar.

Unfortunately, I have to slow down my postings on this blog. I moved to a new place, so I´m still keeping myself busy with painting, but of a whole other kind 

Tomorrow, I´ll try to post some pics of the gnoblars and markers I´ve been working on the past few days.
About the markers, since I always forget about the number of wounds, spells in play or magic items, I decided to make everything in this army either WYSIWYG or make markers for it. At the moment, I´m working on wound markers.

I´ve also decided on my first 500 points to collect and paint:
- 1 bruiser with iron fist and light armour
- 3 bulls with iron fists (including bellower and a standard bearer with lookout gnob)
- 20 gnoblar fighters (including groin biter)
- 8 trappers (including snarefinger)
- 2 leadbelchers
So I have already finished the bulls and will use the crusher as a bruiser untill I´ve painted all of the above models.

You wont enjoy painting the Gnoblars.

I don´t mind painting the gnobs, they don´t take me that long to paint. Besides, the theme for my army is that they have a lot of gnoblars to serve them, so the ogres can focus their energy on cracking skulls as dogs of war! I plan to keep up my interest in painting gnoblars by converting some of them and to make unit-fillers. At the moment, I´m toying with an idea of using the halfling hotpot as unit filler (with gnoblars instead of halflings, ofcourse). Does anyone have a good suggestion of what I can use as a filler in my gnoblar units?

A wip of a model I might use as a groinbiter. The story behind this little fellow is that some gnoblars saw a bretonnian knight defeating an ogre singlehandedly. This made quite an impact on the greenskins, so every now and then an enterprising individual will loot a knight´s gear and bully a small gnoblar into being his steed. In battle, this wannabe knight charges in the thick of battle and every now and then even manages to actually defeat a foe.


In my last post, I talked about using markers for everything from gut magic to wounds. This is what I made in a spare hour; a one-wound marker and a two-wounds marker. When the gnoblar fighters unit is finished, I´ll start on a bicker marker.

minor update on my army:

Between painting my new house, I still managed to find some time to put together and start painting the next batch of 4 gnoblars and the groinbiter I showed in my last post. I should be able to post some pics soon.

(this post is a way for me to create a deadline, forcing me to put more time into painting models, instead of walls...let's see if I fall for this little trick  )

After a month of living without warhammer (I was busy with moving to another place), I finally had some time to continue painting my ogres the last two weeks.

In one of my previous posts I showed a pic of a knight gnoblar. I´m currently busy converting more gnoblars to make them look like they are mimicking warriors of other races. It inspired me to have a go at my first little story.

Snug scanned the the battlefield for something interesting to look at. His ladz got bogged down, because Grubbucket and Dungnoze found 2 beetles. He could hear the high pitch of gnoblar shouts and cheers. "Them boyz Grubbucket and Dungnoze have beetle race", thought Snug. He couldn´t care less about it and was more interested to set his pointy little teeth in some groins, but he had to wait for one of the gnoblar fighters got bored of the race and decided to squish the beetles. In the meantime, an interesting scene caugth his eyes. A lone grail knight readied his lance and spurred his warhorse to charge a band of 4 of ogres. "Phah, canned pinkskin will be good lunch for Thrug and his mates." Snug sat down on a helmet lying on the battefield and eagerly anticipated a nice little show where the Bretonnian would die horribly and end up in one or more Ogre stomachs. The knight quickly approached the ogres and than, the unthinkable happened, Snug almost fell of his helmet. The knigth pierced the upper body of Thrug while he smashed into another ogre. The knight fell to the ground, but so did Thrug, a piece of shattered lance sticking out of his chest. Although the remaining 3 ogres dispatched the unsaddled human with ease, the Bretonnian still made an impression on Snug while he sat to ponder the thing the just witnessed.

At the corpse harvest, after battle, Snug approached Thrug and the dead human. From the knight, he took both the helmet and shield. Afther that, he climbed on Thrug and pulled the lance out of his dead body. "If humie can kill them big ogres, with pointy stick and shiny bits, I can kill them humies."[/font]

I also managed to finish 2 leadbelchers.

Thanks for the positive criticism, guys. And Blu Blu, it´s good to be back. The period that I didn´t have time to spend on Ogres was waaay to long for my taste.

As for the my (slowly) growing tribe, coming week, I plan to assemble a unit of 8 gnoblar trappers so I can start to play 500 point games with this army list:
- Bruiser with heavy armour and iron fist
- 3 bulls with iron fists, light armour, bellower upgrade, standard upgrade and lookout gnoblar
- 20 gnoblar fighters
- 8 gnoblar trappers
- 2 leadbelchers
(which makes 499 points).

So next week I hope to post the news of my first glorious victory

Two days ago, I had my first battle with my Ogre army. I played a 500 points battle with a friend who used my vampire count army. I had 3 bulls (iron fists, bellower, standard, light armour, lookout gnoblar), 20 gnoblar fighters, 8 trappers, 2 leadbelchers and a bruiser (heavy armour, iron fist), while my opponent had 20 skeletons (with full command), 2 units of 8 ghouls, one unit of 5 dire wolves (one of which was a doomwolf) and a level 2 necromancer. I´m too lazy to write a battle report, but the short version is that I won. Hurray, my first victory! It wasn´t really evenly matched though. My opponent usually plays empire. He is used to playing a defensive army with lots of missle troops and cannons, so he didn´t really know what to do with undead...but still, it´s a victory 

I also did some painting, but not as much as I want to. I got delayed with the paint- and converting work on my gnoblar fighters. Three hours of work on a 2 points model...still, I´m happy with the results. I want my fighters to look like they are with a tribe of ogres who work as dogs of war in the old world, so my gnoblars look like they have scavenged equipment from various races. In a couple of days, I hope I´ve finished the whole unit of 20 fighters, so I can start working on the trappers. In the mean time, some pics of a couple of fighters.

I think I want to have at least 2000 points, preferably 1000 more...but now I don´t even have 500 yet, so still a long way to go.

I saw the open painting competion thread in the Butcher´s Cauldron, and I decided to enter for the fun of it. I was working on a groinbiter, and I´m curious to see how much votes it will get. I don´t expect to win with the entry, but I´m hoping for at least a couple of votes. So without further ado...my entry:



Oh yeah, I also suffered a massacre at the hands of 500 points of empire handgunners and a cannon..grrr. The ogres were shot to bits and when the pitiful remnants (read: gnoblars) of my battalion reached the empire lines, they were swiftly dispatched by a unit of swordsmen. My opponent had a nice hill to deploy his missle troops on. Still, I had a good time playing Ogres. Besides, they are not dead, just wounded and well motivated to have some empire soldiers for lunch.

The Groinbitter is magic I love the pose, he really looks like he is the boss Gnoblar.

It takes me about 6 or 7 hours to paint an ogre. This, however, is an estimate, because I don´t really keep track of time when painting.

@Blu Blu: Thanks for the compliments. I try to get some variety in my gnoblars, because I just love the little critters. They´re cool looking models, easy to paint and are always good for a laugh.

I´ll try to have pics of a fully finished gnoblar unit (with some more conversions) tomorrow or saturday.

I already did some conversions. I used the 4 metal trapper models I liked best and made 4 trappers out of plastic fighter models (and converted them to look trapper-esque).

After the trappers, I´ll begin working on a mean-looking bruiser model (with some sword- and luck gnoblars, I just can´t escape from the little blighters  )

Right, it has been a while since my last post. I've been wrapped up in work, going out and helping my parents break down their kitchen (a very Ogre-like affair...smashing tiles etc) in order to get a new one in.

I managed to get some painting done as well and finished an eight gnob-strong trapper unit. The pics are a bit dark, unfortunately (does anyone has some tips on taking better pictures?):

Sure thing. I always think of it as a compliment to be copied by others. What idea  are you planning to "steal"?

Did some more painting and modelling last week. I'm currently working on my bruiser/tyrant but I also managed to finish some counters. I always forget certain things, or pick up 'wound dice' to throw with in the heat of battle, so I decided to make counters for everything. Below, you can see wound markers (2 of which I've already shown in one of my first posts) for 1, 2 and three wound, 2 flee markers, a marker to remind me of the one shot a leadbelcher unit has, and (the one I'm really happy with) a bicker marker (a sleeping gnoblar).

A small update this week. I started painting my bruiser/tyrant. I used the regular model and converted it to have an iron fist and a big hammer. I also stuck 2 sword gnoblars on his base and a luck gnoblar on his shoulder. I should have some pics of him next time.

I finished my bruiser/tyrant model (in small games, he will be a bruiser, in larger games a tyrant) this morning. As a brain aid, I stuck the sword gnoblars and luck gnoblar on the model. The model changed a little after taking the pictures. I dropped it and I had to replace the damaged spike on his helmet. All in all, the model proved to be surprisingly resilient (I dropped it on a concrete floor). I, on the other hand, am not as resilient...I almost got a heart attack when I dropped it

I´m currently working on a 3 strong bull unit with a second hand weapon, including some with some gnoblar conversions.

That got me thinking about future additions to the army. I now have a 5 strong bull unit with iron fists which, will be joined by a character. I´ve been playing with the idea of making it a unit of 7 bulls (again, joined by a character), but I can´t make up my mind; do I enlarge it to a unit of 8, or keep it the way it is now? If I make it a unit of 8, I have a lot of points tied in one unit (a unit of this size will only be used in games of more than 1000 points), but I think a unit of this size can hold its ground against fully ranked units.

Does anyone have some sagely advice?

It has been a while since I had an update, my excuse being my holiday.

I managed to finish some models though. I painted a unit of 3 bulls with a second hand weapon, and almost finished a second unit of leadbelchers.

Yep, the tyrants hand is from a bellowers arm. I bought the battalion boxed set, which left me with a lot of spare parts, so that got me thinking about alternative uses for these parts. And I really enjoy converting gnoblars. I'm not good with greenstuff or indeed sculpting with any other kind of material and I admire people who know their way around with it. Because converting ogres without the use of greenstuff isn't really an option, I needed something else to make my army stand out from other ogre armies. In my opinion, converting gnoblars is a good way of making my army standing out; as you said, nobody else is crazy enough to put effort in a 2 to 6 points model. 

I so need to get back to my tribe but I have hit a brick wall, thou seeing this has got me itching to paint again cheers.

How many points have you got painted so far it must be nearly the 500pts or is it more now? Despite the time it takes for you to paint i wouldnt start to speed up, the end result of all the work on this gnoblog is awesome!

P.S love the marker ideas have you considerd making a turn counter? I would love to see that. A rotating ogre with a pointing arm to the diffrent numbers, i saw one of these done with a dark elf corsair and with your considerable skill i can see it coming ot bette...

But seriously, I have 500 points army (a group picture will follow soon, by the way), consisting of more than 80 individual gnoblar and snotling models. To have a 2000 points army means that I'll have to paint 240 more  . I'm not sure if I'll ever do that much. But at the moment I enjoy painting them and I still have plenty of inspiration to do more of them.

Also, please start making Manbiters soon: mercenary Gnoblars would fit your theme so well, and knowing you, you would make them look amazing.

I was planning to put all the 'mimicing' gnoblars I have so far in one unit (so the gnoblars posing as knights / chaos warriors / dwarf slayers / etcetera of which I have 10 right now) and make it into a 20 strong unit with command group.

I have some pics of the full 500 point gnoblar army, consisting of:
- 1 unit of 20 fighters with a musician and standard (the snotling slaves);
- 1 unit of 20 fighters with full command;
- 2 units of 12 trappers including a snarefinger;
- 1 scraplauncher;
- Slygit (battle standard bearer);
- Gnobizzar da Wize (general).

Yesterday, I finished a template for the scaplauncher and built a gnoblar hotpot (in my ogre army, it wil use the halfling hotpot rules, in the gnoblar army, it will use the doomdiver rules).

Also, I'm trying to figure out what kind of markers to make for the 'Lucky Little Gits' rule (a reroll of any single D6 result). Each gnoblar army gets D6 rerolls. Since I always forget the number of wounds, who's fleeing etc, I made markers for everything (I have turn-, wound-, magic-, fleeing-, fear-, bicker-, luck gnoblar- and tooth gnoblar markers), so I want to make markers for that as well. I'm planning to use the luck gnoblar markers for it, but I have only 1 of those so far (a gnoblar rolling double sixes on 2 dice). I want to use one of the greasus gnoblars with golden pot and I'm thinking of using an idea from fantasy freak (although I'm not sure it was him, I have to check that) of using a card playing gnoblar. So that leaves me with 3 more ideas I need for the Lucky Little Gits markers. Does anybody have a good idea?

You are 'The Marker King'!, the Scrappy one looks very good, although it might be slightly hard to see exactly what's underneath it when playing, because it's not clear, thats the only thing that stopped me making one.
Nevertheless it's still a nice addition the army, I don't think a plastic one would have fit in your army anyway

Maybe a Gnoblar holding up a "lucky foot" of some kind? This is normally a rabbit sure, but it could easily be a Snotling being dangled upside down with the Gnoblar rubbing his foot for good luck!

Maybe a gnoblar doing something lucky, like a Matrix dodge?
Great models BigD. I've never enjoyed trying to use templates that weren't clear, but that one looks awesome and if it works fine for you more power to you.

Ideas:
a gnoblar throwing a horse shoe backwards (of course hitting another gnoblar in the proces)
a gnoblar shooting arrows blindfolded at another gnoblar standing in front of a piece of wood (of course not being hit)
Both ideas give you enough space to lay a dice on with the amount of rerolls.

Just thought of some ideas for the luck Gnobs;

A gnob sitting on a large horse shoe.

A Gnob holding a needle typed thing next to some hay (finding needle in a haystack)

Gnob holding winning lottery/raffle ticket.

Gnoblar dressed as an leprachaun(sp)

Gnob with a Genie's lamp

Gnoblar holding a sheild to guard his face with an arrow or sword through it, just stopping short of his face

Thanks, I really like them! I think I want to use the idea of a goblin dressed as leprechaun, a gnoblar with genie lamp (perhaps with a snotling posing as genie coming out of it) and either a gnoblar throwing a horseshoe an hittng another one or a gnoblar dodging something or not getting hit by arrows.

I'm currently working on the hot-pot, but when that's finished, I think I'll start with some luck markers.

Oh my god. I've just discovered this gnoblog, and have just spent a few minutes reading back through the whole thing.  It's awesome. Granted i am a little bit stoned, but seriously, it's amazing.

All your stuff if great, but i'm particularly stunned by the scrap template and bicker marker, and all those other little touches that make the whole army stand out.

I don't really have any update. I've started modelling some gnoblars for the revolution. The most interesting thing is that I'm planning to build a paymaster gnoblar for the unit of manbiters. I'm still undecided if I'll use it as unit filler or as unit champion. Oh yeah, I also started working on the luck markers. Progress is slow however due to "real-life" stuff interfering in my modelling- and painting efforts.

I can imagine that you can't really see it. They do look a bit weird from those angles. The one with his arms in the air is shouting because he dropped a horseshoe on his foot (the iron thingie on his left foot is a horseshoe. I know it's a bit unclear, you'll just have to take my word for it . The one next to the flattened gnob is holding a fox tail.

An update without pics this time. Because I'm participating in the current painting contest of the Stronghold, I've started modelling my entries and want to start the painting somewhere in the coming week.

I've decided I want to do some human models, but I want them to fit in my ogre and gnoblar armies as well. So I've decided to make objective markers featuring humans. One will be Ruben Kyte and another one will be a cornered empire captain. Pics will be shown arter the competition.

Here's my entries for the painting competetion in the Stronghold I'm currently participating in! I'll use these models as markers (capture/hold markers or messenger markers).







These pics will probably be the last ones for a while. Every now and then I loose my motivation to paint, only to re-emerge later. So I'll be taking a break from painting...but I'll be back (mostly me interest comes back after seeing a particularly cool model or having a nice conversion idea).

Very nice Markers, the second one is excellent, you done the Marco Columbo model(I think thats what it is) major justice, the extra work on the yellow shows.

Sad to hear no more painting for a while.

Sometimes a change is as good as a rest, it always helps me doing different armies/models when I lose the desire to paint, or just making stuff instead of painting helps too.

Sometimes it really is better to take a complete break and come back more eager to paint, don't leave to too long though

I'm reletivly new to this website so I just found this gnoblog and I gotta say, you are amazing, mate!

Everything you do have so much character and alot of things are very very creative. A few months from now i'll be starting up my own tribe and you have given me so much inspiration that I can't thank you enough. The Gnobs was one of the major reasons I took a liking to the ogres and seeing your work on them just makes me smile. I hope I can be able to do some good work myself. (although my painting skills are quite amatureish comperd to this)

Wow, incredible that people still reply to my gnoblog after such a long time.

Other things (relationships, buying a house, career-stuff) kept me away from the hobby. Recently, I've been visiting the stronghold again. After (literally) years, I'm being tempted to get back to my beloved ogres (and more importantly) gnoblars (sorry, fellow ogres ), despite the upcoming releases (the beasties are not really my cup of tea, too science-fiction-ish). Let's see if I can get tempted some more. I have some interesting ideas, but for now, I want to sit back and wait for the new army book and model releases before I start.

It's very nice to see what great things have happened to the stronghold; The Bellower (cool magazine), all the active members, cool gnoblogs. I need more time and less sleepy eyes to look at all the new cool things.

As a person working on my Gnoblar Horde, I must say thank you.  These conversions are some of the coolest I've seen.  And the attention to detail is great.  I was a little saddened when I was the date of you gnoblar on the Mordheim dog; I thought I thought of that one!!  Yours are crisp and neatly done, mine are based and dipped.  I have converted about 20 of them, based on 20x40 mm bases, 5 are complete.

ANYWAY...

Again, really, REALLY nice stuff you have here, Mr. BigD.

Right, I have made a plan for the new additions for my army.

I've waited for the new armybook to arrive, before making any decisions. I haven't bought the army book yet, but I have bought the latest White Dwarf and seeing the articles and new models, I think it's safe to assume no new gnoblar units have been added to the list. That's why I want to expand my gnoblar horde using goblin rules. For people who are new to this blog, I own a small ogre army with a sizeable chunch of gnoblar units. (painting and modelling gnoblars is more fun, in my opinion). Also, I'm guessing that I can't resist the temptation of buying some of the new ogre plastics, so I'm also looking to expand my ogre force.

With this in mind, I want to buy a giant with on the base an ogre slaver, which can be replaced by a gnoblar holding a big key. The fluff will be that the gnoblar revolution (my gnoblar horde) has freed the slave giant from his ogre captors.

That's the plan, now I only have to execute it. :-)

Bought a giant yesterday at my local GW and also had an interesting chat with a GW employee. Het told me gnoblars have a command group now and trappers are an upgrade (much like netters for night goblins). The command group is good to hear but the news about the trappers is a bit dissapointing.

Back to the giant. I stepped away from the plan of adding an ogre slaver to the base. I've tried it, but the base looked too busy with both on them and I didn't want to use a bigger base. Below is a work in progress picture. I want to add a wizard-like gnoblar in his left hand and some on the base. I also need to greenstuff the gaps, 2 mushrooms and make a belt for his gutplate and perhaps some chains. I'm also looking for other spaces on the giant to place a gnoblar or snotling. Any ideas anyone?

I'm thinking of a gnoblar telling him where to go. I've rummaging through my bitsbox. Haven't found anything yet. I might buy a goblin shaman and convert him to look like a gnoblar.

I've considered this, but my fluff is that the giant is either a slave giant in my ogre army, or a giant in my gnoblar horde, being released by gnoblars in exchange for his help. A tied-up gnoblar on his belt doesn't fit this fluff.

Haven't really done anything, so no new pictures. I've greenstuffed some mushrooms for the base, filled some gaps and made a belt to hold the giants gutplate. This weekend I hope start to put some paint on him.
