The Bloodbather Tribe

Hi all

My first post here and I thought I would start by sharing my plans for a new Ogre army (as everyone needs at least one Ogre army right?).

I have seen a few of the Chaos themed armies and fancied having a crack at that, so I have decided on a Khornate themed army, now unlike the others I don't see this as a tribe that worships Khorne, but maybe on their travels they have come across a Khornate Warband and liked what they saw. So my plan is to have lots of axes, brass, skulls, khornate symbols etc. I kinda like the idea that actually these big guys don't really know what they are playing with.

Part of the background will include the Tyrant Varg Baneblood fighting it out with some uber Khornate thing (maybe even a Bloodthrister) and killing it with a savage bite to the neck ripping open the juggular and spraying himself and some of the tribe in blood...hence the skin colour.

So here is a pic of my first test skin colour, its using the new GW foundation paint so is just a quick basecoat, ink and overbrush, no highlighting as yet...so wotcha all think...does it work?



Any thoughts, comments, ideas and criticisms are much appreciated.

I like the color, but it is showing a little pinkish on my screen. Maybe if it had a dried blood appearance? More brownish red?

Also is their skin meant to just be red, or do they bathe in blood prior to battle? I had a thought that if they do like that one tribe does with their hands, except your guys splash blood all over themselves, that would be sickening and awesome. Just a thought.

Thanks for the comment, the pic does look a little pinkish, sure thats just down to my poor camera work and a bright flash, the colours more red gore so a little darker than you see.

I did think about doing a tribe that just covered themselves in blood so some of the origional skin might show through but I like that their skin is actually turning red from all the blood that they have injested and bathed in over time, I see the tribe as living this Khornate lifestyle for a considerable period of time, maybe its the first blessing of Khorne...again wanted red to be the primary colour of the army but just do it in a slightly different way to the usual Khorne army with red armour.

Well that sounds awesome then! Its cool you thought that through. I think thats an important part of any army, as long as you have cool, fluffy reasons for stuff it can't be wrong. Good work, I'm excited to see more.

Awesome, yet more ogres fall to theruinous powers. The pic also shows as pretty pink on my screen but if it's all good IRL then it sounds great. If you do want to darken the blood, I'd suggestgiving them a wash of flesh wash to define it a bit more. Looking forward to seeing this tribedevelop and more pics (without the flash?)

I think that Ogre looks great, if a little pink. But be warned heretic...if u should try to stray into the Holy Mountains from the Wastes the Mawguard will fight u all the way! (just my way of saying 'hello').

Ok so its been a couple of weeks since this project started and I haven't done a whole lot of work these past few days...but I do still have some new bits and pieces for you.

I have had an Idea for my Tyrant, just had to make a GInormuos Bloodthirster axe to fit in with the background. I had a Forgeworld Rhinox rider sitting around waiting to get painted and I just love the body of this guy so thought I'd put him to better use, involved lots of cutting and breathing resin, probably not very good for me huh? I won't be using the Archaeon base, I'll do something with skulls to continue the Khorne theme.



I have also been trying my hand at the "Standing Ogre" tutorial (thnx gORCUS), you can find it here if you wanna give it a go  http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=4028.0//url This first one I did I thought I had messed up as I used the wrong legs! But he seems to have turned out ok so far, quite happy with that and not as many bits to throw away, which is always nice! Like I ever throw anything away!



Heres a height comparison, so you really get a good idea of how much taller these guys are. I think I will be using them for my Guts.



Ok so I hope to get finished on the first tall Gut, add his axe and some bits and pieces, and make up the next two ready for green. I also wanna play around with the Tyrant and get him greened, then maybe once that lot is complete I can get some painting started! Oh and khorgoth I don't plan any mutations to the Ogres as they aren't really blessed by Khorne (for now) but I might just have to do something cool for my Gorgers!

As for colour I am sticking with the red skin, tho not totally blood red, I want to make sure I can still cover them in blood and gore and it will stand out...but lets see what happens! Still got plenty of building ahead of me before any paint  pots open up.

As ususal any comments, ideas or critiscms are welcome.

Phenomenal. The horns and the hand are connected with blue-tac right now, right? Where did you get the piece of terrain on the first pic? Why'd you change it to a pile of skulls on the other pic?

I just gotta give you credit for having the guts to cut a £36 forge world thunderlord up - that takes some courage!

The tyrant conversion is great - I love the stance.

I think this tribe is shaping up very nicely so far

Hehehe yes Onraj in the pics of the Tyrant I have only used blu-tac, couldn't wait to see what he'd look like stuck together, but there is a lot to do on him yet, I have already decided to change his horns position and axe hand, hopefully you'll get to see the finished (well stuck together anyway) model mid week. The spikey terrain bit is from the Archaeon box set, it is very cool but I want all the bases themed together and I have lots of resin skull bits from the hero basing kits GW did, and I think skulls are more fitting for a Khorne themed force.

Oh and I was half way through cutting him off his Rhinox when I realised what I was cutting up! Well hope its not £36 down the drain...now I need to find something to do with the Rhinox I have left over!

Anyway I have been busy this morning, I started off finishing off my first standing Gut, here he is all axed up.



Then I started adding some bits and pieces to bulk him out, from the Orgre, Chaos Maurader and Chaos Warriors sprues, all this stuff helps to hide my pretty poor green stuffing! Things didn't quite fit so I swapped heads and something awesome happened.



I am real happy with how he has turned out, a pretty big change in a short period of time, so i started sawing and glueing and now have 2 more to work on.



Having a break now tho, broken all my drill bits, so need to go buy some more tomorrow!

Wow, yeah the standing iron gut looks amazing. I can't wait to see the rest of the unit. gORCUS's standing ogre tutorial is great and when I get around to redoing some more bulls for my changeeaters I'm definatley going to use it! i love the tyrant as well, I always though the thunderlordbody would look great on a standing pair of legs and you've actually done it!

Really well painted, and the conversion work is pretty cool !!!! I was just wondering, is the red like a "Red Gore" from the GW range kinda red, or is it a pale red, because in your 1st picture, it looks really pale, but in later pictures its quite deep/dark. I eagerly wait for your army fluff/background, as the chaos/ruinous powers themed armies always have a fluff that reads really well, and is quite intriguing.

I cant say for sure Barak Eyegouger  but I think its like that because the first pic was taken with flash and the last one was not. Phenomenal work again. They look awesome.

Hi again

So I have been away with work this week so haven't managed to do quite as much as I had wanted. However I have completed the first Gut unit and I am really happy with the way they have turned out.

Hope you all like them as much as I do, and I would totally recommend everyone trying the standing ogre tutorial, as with a little patience the results are awesome.

Work on the Tyrant continues and we'll do what we can to get him ready for painting later this week.

@Barak , the red is a bit like GW's Red Gore/ Scab Red a similiar colour but much better coverage over black, it is a nice rich deep red colour. My pic taking is still in its infant stages so I apologise for that.

wow, those irno guts look amazing! I can't wait to see them painted. Where did all the axe blades come from? In the pic I can't quite see oif they're plasticard or a metal component. And do all those skulls on the base get glued on paintstakingly or are they lifted together from somewhere (battle for skull Pass idol to gork/mork?)

To answer some of your questions

@ Corai, the axe blades are from all over, I spent an age trawling thru GW's BIG catalouge and found every axe I could, then chose the coolest ones, so these are (on the right and middle) the Shaggoths axe, although I have done a little work in the middle with a saw! Tried to make it Khorne looking, not 100% happy but it will do, I kinda like that he looks a bit like a standard (totally by chance, no planning involved!) so I can use it as such or not! The axe on the right is em...I'm not sure now...one of the 2handed Minotuar axes maybe? The skulls are from the hero basing kit GW did at Christmas, a mate and I swapped bits out of it so I have lots of skulls to use, plus a few individual skulls to make a difference here and there.

@ Ghworg, the shields are just plain Maurader and Empire shields on the left and right handed Ogres, I have added a few spikes from the Chaos vehicle spikey sprue (don't think thats its official name, but I'm sure you know what I mean!). The Ogre in the middle has a couple of shields from the new Giant kit, I really am raiding as many kits as possible for these guys!

So the Tyrant is nearly all greened up, another day or so and he should be ready for posting.

Those Ironguts look awesome.  I'll have to read through the standing ogre tutorial for sure.

So finally finished the green on the Tyrant, taken a little longer than expected but I am really happy with the result.

So I am thinking maybe he needs a back banner or something to balance the figure out a bit, what do you all think? Any suggestions?
