"Don´t go the the wood lass, they´re queer in there. Nu´n but gay elves, singing and dancing with the faeries."- Lothat Morgenstern´s last warning to Moses the Mercifull before the battle of spites.
2000 pts battle.
The ogres could have done better...
, however since it was my first game with my new army and I only lost with about 200pts I am pretty satisfied.
I ran 4 characters, a Tyrant, 2 butchers and a hunter.
Recap on the characters:
Moses, as my tyrant is named, did extraordinaty good. He took out a treeman (That charged him), a unit of dryads and a lv 2 wizard chick and all this cost him only two wounds.
Unfourtunatly he came into the combat a little late, because I was running around using his Ld to keep my MSU "naked" bulls together. If I had played him more agressively and given him a "mawseeker" name, he would have done even better.
The Ogre tyrant is awesome!
The two butcers where awesome. They sucked the elves powerdice like a kid a nipple. Remains in play spells with a dispel cost of 6 rules. Unfourtunatly one of them gave himself a wound when he was trying to gain one and was pretty crippled for a while, but he managed to pull trough thanks to his bangstick (He took out half a unit of waywatchers with it.)
The only problem I had with the butchers was that there should have been 3.
The hunter sucked.
Yeah, he´s a strong character, but his problem is that he is a character.
Gut magic is just too good to miss out on and considering that the Hunter is more expensive and can´t cast spells he isn´t very good in an OK army.
If he could be the general he would be awesome, because he´s a little better on the tactical side than the Tyrant, but since he can´t he just plain sucks in a 2000pts game.
The problem in this game was that the elves where playing with 6 levels, a 4 and a 2. This meant that even though I countered everything worth countering he still owned my magicphase as well. I got 2 or 3 spells through during the game, granted, it was some great spells that meant a lot to me, but if my hunter hadn´t failed so miserably and been a butcher instead I would have owned the magic phase and made sure I didn´t loose as many bulls as I did to attrition (I won´t call it shooting, them things aren´t any bigger than toothpicks fer crying out loud).
Units:
Naked Bulls: They aren´t that great. But still, they aren´t that expensive either and one of them can acually hold his ground against normal elves for a while. I had one who went two rounds against dryads on his own. He is now a memorably martyr/hero of my tribe.
The main problem I had with the bulls was maneuvering. They blocked my guts for too long, but on the other hand, they also made sure all my guts arrived on target.
I ran 4 units of 3 bulls and I think it´s a good number to use. If they are charged and die it doesn´t really matter, it´s only 105 pts, but more often than not they hold their ground a few turns so the rest of the army can maneuvre. Again, I needed that last butcher to give them stubborn, then they would be awesome.
Ironguts: Arguable the best choise in the army list. THANK YOU PEOPLE for opening my eyes to them. My 2, 4gut units destroyed everything they encountered. One of the units charged through a hail of arrowfire, lost a single ogre and massacred the archers, totally whiping out his backline.
Ironguts are amazing, they have big nasty things to hit with and they have armor and a baaaaad attitude.
Leadbelchers: I used 2 units of 2 belchers and all in all they killed... 5 elves. I´m no genious at math, but 220pts of ogre to kill 5 elves don´t sound that good... but it is.
Because he was pretty freaked by them, he didn´t want them to hit any of his strategic units, so he used a lot of firepower on them, meaning that my naked bulls made it to cc.. most of them anyway.
Also he decided that his flank wasn´t really that greatly guarded by a unit of wardancers, because he feared the cannons and the hunter that was standing next to them.
They weren´t exactly convinving, but again, they weren´t that bad either.
Gorger: This guy rocks.
I was lucky enough to get him into action in turn 2 and what he did was getting in from one of the sides, right behind his fast cavalry, whose sole purpose was to flank charge my ironguts and support his waywatchers and his treeman.
He charged them in turn 3 and held them for the rest of the game, leaving only one elf to tell the tale. 75pts for his 230pts unit, I`LL TAKE IT!
It also kept the tactiacal support for his treeman (who is now very tender) so basically it made the job easier for my tyrant
Hmm.. That was my army. All in all I don´t think theres too much wrong with the selection other than the fact that I´m adding a manhunter (for beardy combos) and getting rid of my hunter for another butcher.
The elves won by a measly 200 pts and I blame it on the fallen hunter... and yes, it´s totally his fault, had he not been killed by a unit of wardancers I would have won... meaning again, had I used 3 butchers I would have had more regeneration and toughness 5, that would have made the day for me.
Anyway we had a great game and it was loads of fun, especially "the charging tree incident".
A little note on Gnoblars though. I suck at guessing range and even though I like their sharp stuff, I don´t see the real point in having a big unit who can suck up punch, because ogres do it very well themselves.
I am not totally rejecting the idea of using gnoblars, but I never really encountered a situation where I though: "Gnoblars, they could really work wonders here."
Another little note: I need some Yetthies, I just realized that I´ll be defenceless against ghosts if I don´t have some, they would probably also have done good today due to all the treehuggin´ (forest moving).
But alas, I hate the models...
