Silver Dragon Project Log

original thread ↗

Alright people - i've decided that i will follow up on my plans to make a dragon using a carnosaur.

I've had these plans FOREVER and finally - i'm going to do it.  I want to make a dragon that will work as a steed for a High Elf warrior - so i had to pick a kind of dragon.  I used the Dungeons and Dragons book "Dragonomicon" to help me decide.  I'm not a DnD player but this book is AMAZING for anyone who likes dragons as much as myself.  Anyway - i settled for a Silver Dragon - a very good hearted dragon who absolutely hates evil (seems to work well for high elves)

Anyway, heres what one looks like

So, in the mail today i received the most important part (along with a bunch of other goodies including the body for my tyrant WOOT)

anyway - the main body

Looking at the first picture and the picture of the carnosaur - its very evident the carnosaur just isn't long enough, so i proceed to chop up the main body (using my fathers sabre saw & special metal cutting blade)

Once i do this i simply pin the 3 main body pieces together.  found here:

and here for the pose of the dragon

The dragon will have forelegs (which will be converted from an extra set of back legs i ordered).  The tail will be almost completely greenstuff/procreate.  The neck & main body will also be greenstuff & procreate.  I look to give the dragon a very nice smooth look just like it's inspiration in the Silver Dragon.  Also - the wings will be made of a combination of wire & thick tracing paper.  I'm looking to make this dragon multipurpose.  It's meant mainly for a steed for a High Elf lord, however i will make a removeable saddle so that other lords may ride it (or so it may be used as a War of the Beard Dragon Prince).  Also the saddle (being removeable) will allow for the dragon to be used in stand alone games (such as the bretonnian dragon quests found on GW's website).

All in all this i hope will be a very rewarding project.  Once i'm done i look to enter it into a competition or two, and finally it will end up in the possession of my girlfriend in August (her birthday) for she is starting a high elf army.

Anyway - i look to update at least once each week.  All feedback, questions, comments and suggestions are very welcome.

sounds like this is going to be an interesting project and from what you say., the conversion's already tsrating totake shape. Unfortunatley it looks like photobucket's down at the moment so all I can see is a bunch of red crosses but I look forward to seeing these pics soon :D are you going to convert the rider as well as the mount?

thanks
Corai

EDIT: Pics back up now, that definatley looks like it will be a good, characterful dragon for a high elf rider. looking forward to seeing the conversion progress

Looks good so far, but don't you think that you will be disapointed after seeing the new dragon? I have seen a pic, but I wasn't allow to photograph it. It's so neat and comes in 3 poses.

Please don't be discouraged though...

Thanks

@Corai - thanks for the feedback - and to answer your question, no i will not  be converting a mount, i'll be using a dragon prince command rider (the guy w/ his helmet at his side), and he'll have a lance with a psuedo banner on it.

@Kyte - i was considering waiting for the new dragon box set - however i don't know exactly when its coming out - plus anything we make ourselves we're pretty happy with, it's always good to have something that is your own - the dragon boxes will probably sell just as quickly as the giant boxes, so for a little while at least i'll have that 'wow factor' of "WOAH, HOW DID YOU MAKE THAT DRAGON OUT OF THE BOX SET?" and "WHY IS IT SO HEAVY!?" so i don't think i'll be too dissapointed

Thanks

This is very intriguing. I look forward to the finished model!
2 Pet Gnoblars! I dub them Itchy and Scratchy, for reasons that are too private to divulge.
looks like a good start
the Dragonomicon is a great book, even better if you play D&D
i'm going to sculpt a dragon head for my titan based of the red dragons head
EDIT: it salso a good book if you plan on sculting anything dragon like, the book has drawings of dragon musculature and skeletons
my army is growing
Wow this project is ambitious. I look forward to seeing it completed

hahah - thank you all for your feedback

i get a feeling and most of you don't see this working out too well for me (and trust me i don't blame you)

it is very ambitious - but hopefully i can get it done w/ some patience and hard work

UPDATE: i've put a little bit of meat to the armature adding some procreate to the wiring to bulk it up and prepare for the actual sculpting; also within the next few days i will be building the armature for the tail of the dragon, probably procreating that swell to add some meat.  In all likliness i'll build a larger display base for him (so that he may be removed for games and replaced for show & tell)

Does anyone have any ideas whatever happened to this project? :|

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Ooooof surely JJ mate, threadomancy is beyond you now?  :P

You're off to a good start.  Good armatures are the key to successful sculptures and you armature looks great.  My one minor critacism is in your "hope it is very rewarding" comment.  As silly and contrived as it seems, thinking positive is huge.  If you let even alittle bit of negativity into your head while undertaking a project it can ruin your work or even kill the project.  Beleive in yourself and approach the making of your silver dragon as if it is going to be the best thing ever. If you do, I'm sure it will be awesome.
Indeed very useful

and very good point JJ my mistake  ;)

They may be exempt, but bringing back the thread to find out what's going on still clogs up the section. If you check out Targhell's profile you'll see he hasn't logged in in almost a year.

If by RAW, you mean "Reg06's Audacious Whims", then you'd be right.

I didn't think of that, simply because as was stated, gnoblogs are exempt from threadomancy, so I didn't see the problem

I bet the dragon is still in a drawer, unfinished :P
this is my first post on the Stronghold in over almost 3 years.... i hadn't touched my ogres or any related projects (including this one) at all until about a week ago... Been distracted with a whole bunch of things non-model related and 40k....

the Dragon is pretty much int he same state as you see above (except the body has been connected w/ greenstuff), but i think i'm going to have to start working on this beast here shortly...

Whilst I'd normally agree with you Khorne ogres, sadly, you are mistaken this time round. As it is a gnoblog, it is exempt from the rules for threadomancy...

Targhell, nice to see your return, and I shall eagerly anticipate the continuation of your work :)
