Well, the first official Ogre Stronghold Tale of Four gamers is underway. The articles are going to start appearing monthly on the main site (click here), with the introduction article and what each player is collecting already up. This thread is for discussing anything and everything to do with the four gamers. If you have a question for one of them, post it here! Want to comment on a conversion or an army list from it, post it here!

Alrighty, I'll start off the discussion by posting up the list I am lookin at and the theme idears -
Branchwraith with Murder of Spites (gonna do her in summer)
10 Dryads with a Branch Nymph upgrade (Spring theme)
10 Dryads (Winter theme)
10 Dryads (Fall theme)
Treeman (Summer)
So I have a good idea of how to get winter along really well. Pretty much barren trees with some snow on them and snow bases. Probably in some sort of grey base working up to a white. As far as the other themes I haven't got really a clue other then copying stuff from Joe Sturge and the rest of the season themed armies. I am more then open to suggestions on what you guys all think would be cool to include in the different seasons. Cheers! Jestor

gulp!
that list looks strong - and going vivaldi will make it look great too! maybe use differences in wood colour too (grey for winter, dark browns for autumn, lighter shades for spring and summer). Possibly also pose the spring and summer ones more "activly" with winter being more "static"? just a thought.
I've been kicking ideas around for my skaven theme too - and one that really appeals to me is clan pestilens. I'm going to try and give each unit in my force a different plague (there are a few types mentioned in the skaven fluff I've read) - modelling them and painting them up should be interesting....
any objections to me using the clan pestilens list from the back of the book??

I'm really leaning towards a cult 'enemy within' style theme. To this end, I'm going to wind up converting dang near everything in the army as I don't really want a norse marauder look like chaos has now. At the moment I'm planning something along the lines of
Marauder Horsemen - Use Glade riders as the base as they have the best unarmoured mounts and are almost armature thin, then sculpt robes etc on top to make them look like mounted cultists. Probably use the old necromunda redemptionists and current flaggellants as influence for robes
2 Chariots (1 for general) - not really sure about these. I'm planning to scratch build them, but chariots are kind of hard to hide in an imperial city. I might see if I can make an imperial looking chariot using imagery from the steamtank etc. All suggestions for these welcome
Chaos Knights - perhaps not the best choice for a small army but If I decide to expand the force I know I'll want some of these guys. For the riders I'm planning on using parts from the plstic chaos warriors and have them in lots of bits of torn robes. Kind of like these are the local order of knights who have fallen and only reveal themselves when the cult is in need of support (much like Aekold Hellbrasses early history). For their mounts, I've been thinking of copying the gnarloc conversion that accompanied the kroot army lost for 40K it's the avian head of a krootox mounted on a cold one's body. I really wanted to add something monstrous to the army and I quite like the idea that the knights are able to hide in the city because their mounts are daemonic and can be summoned when needed.
Hounds - if I do the gnarloc style conversion then the obvious way to go for these guys would be kroot hounds, but I love the regular chaos hound models so may stick with these.
any thoughts on any of this?
Thanks Corai

I am more then open to suggestions on what you guys all think would be cool to include in the different seasons.
Spring generally seems to be more of a "wet" season. You could add rain dropplets or puddles to the bases. Also things are fresh, maybe some fungus which florish in the moisture. Also moss is nice and green. Also if you can get it to look right, bud'ing would be a cool effect.
For the fall things start to really dry out, so moss would be grey and brown and crispy. There is generally a blanket of dead leaves on the ground.
Just some random thoughts
Jestor05 Mar 2007
Thanks Seer, the water is actually a real cool idea. You just spawned an idea that I forgot i wanted to try. Someone posted about using epoxy for water drops a little bit ago, I might give that a go! Ya, the fall I pretty much looked over at woodland scenics and they have some colored leaves so the leaves are in, not sure what else yet.
As far as I am concerned Wildcard you can run any list you want Clan pestilens has always been my favorite as far as the Skaven models go. A bunch of censur bearers leading out some plague rats is an awful force to reckon with. Even if you win you still die

Corai-If u are doing a Cult theme, I would replace chariots with some sort of infantry, as subverted members of the populace would be far less unobtrusive than chariots. Also, I think some Daemons of a minor level are to be in order, as they would be required to impress the gullible masses.

Right, I think I've sussed out my army list now - and it's going to be a mammoth task to get it all painted up! I guess I'll have to learn how to paint rats fast.
One thing I'm still unsure on is how many heroes to field. A plague priest is certainly in (it wouldn't feel like clan pestilens without one) but should I have:
a) a second plague priest b) a cheiftan (possibly a BSB) c) a festering chantor (the pestilens version of a wizard) d) no second hero and more troops instead!!
currently, I intend to go for a "horde" build - and at 750 points that means I can get 90+ models onto the battlefield (or roughly 3 times the number of models as my 2000 point ogre force - that's just MAD!)
any thoughts welcome!

well that's a mdan site more than my planned 17! I've spent this month's money already but am still o the fence about what to replace chariots with. I agree with Ghworg that infantry is a way to go, I just don't really want to add infantry to an army who otherwise has an average Movement of 7 as they're just going to slow me down. I may throw in some screamers of Tzeentch though, perhaps done up as disc riders (hmm, plan forming, I'm liking this) and just invest some more points in knights!
The first unit's almost built and I hope to have some wip pics up in the cauldron soon to appeal for colour scheme advice (I'm so torn between 2!)

Corai: could u give us a solid representation of ur theme plz? Soz if this sounds offensive, but, to me, u appear to be giving two conflicting themes: a cult list (which, generally would be mostly cheap, expendable infantry cultists, with maybe an elite bodyguard for the leader and daemonic support units) and the 'nomadic tribe' list, built for speed and hitting power. I would just like clarification, so I can supply relevant advice.
Wildcard: I reckon u should have a Festoring Chanter, cos I assume u already have cc/Ld abilities in the Plague Priest. Also, a pivotal part of a Pestilens army are Plague Rats, who not only have the fluffy ability to spread disease, but are also Swarms with Poisoned Attacks!
2 Pet Gnoblars! I dub them Itchy and Scratchy, for reasons that are too private to divulge.
Corai10 Mar 2007
the theme is cult. Everything should be representative of something easily concealed or repsented within an imperial city. However I don't want to field an expedable army of cheap infantry so I'm fielding a mainly cavalry list. The army is supposed to represent a portion of the cult after it has been unveiled (kind of hard to have an army go to war covertly i nthe logic of a game or warhammer). I think the cult may well be largley interested in speed, so the fighting contingent represented by my army will be all about horses ans other more chaotic means of moveing quickly
Thanks Corai
Forum Primer: http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=7241.0
Ghworg10 Mar 2007
This may seem silly, but I have an idea that ties in both cult and speed. How about a theme in which ur army represents a messenger network connecting the many cults/Beastman tribes within the Empire, whose task is to convey information between the cults so as to help co-ordinate their efforts, so as to in the future acheive a great uprising. The secret behind this network is that it is controlled by the Change Eaters, who use the information received to aid their conquest of the Old World.
As they are fundamentaly a messenger service, the cult puts much emphasis on speed. Its couriers are mainly disatisfied highwaymen and others converted to Chaos and given a horse (these can be represented by Marauder Horsemen). Sometimes the message is of such importance that only the most dependable and elite members of the cult may carry it (these can be represented by Knights). Sometimes the missive is carried among other letters by a sympathiser in the Empire Post, on a letter-wagon (represented by a Chariot). Long-distance missives can be sent from Sorcerer to Sorcerer via Furie or Screamer, who generally bear it tattooed on their skin. Finally, for extremely important messages, bodyguards may accompany the deliverer, hulking brutes, heavily disguised in cloaks (represented by Ogres or Minotaurs).
Its a long shot, but how does this sound to u?

That's an interesting idea Ghworg. I already had a lot of the fluff pretty much hammered out, but I think I'll work this in, as it makes sense, and manages to spread the influence of the cult throughout the empire, which gives it a grander, more epic scale. Should be posting the firs chapter of fluff in the mawpit sagas in the next few days

20 Plague Monks additional hand weapon deacon musician standard bearer
21 Clan Slaves
21 Clan Slaves
5 Plague Censer Bearers

The second of the two packages arrived today, so I now have loads of stuff to convert. I just thought less was painted, so I will have some more work to do, de-assembling miniatures, and stipping them. Thanx god I will convert most, and will cover most of the body with procreate (one reason more to go toward the roman theme).
My 750 pts, will have: Bruiser: general, with GW, LA, wyrdestone necklace; 2 x3 Bulls 2 x4 IGs It is 756 (so 6 pts over) but I don't think people will mind.
For now, I'll start working on 60 euros worth of stuff, which are the 8 IGs (2 boxes of 4, at 30 euros each) so keep posted to see more from these guys.

Sorry guys for the repeated typo... I'm actually feeling ill, these days, yet, too much work has to be done (I mean real work), and I am obbligated to go to my office anyway...
Ok, a quick update of the progress of the III Cohorte of my legionary ogres: last night, I de-assembled all the models. Luckily, the guy I bought them from used super-glue, and everything snapped off quite easily... Serena wasn't too happy, though, to hear a costant *SNAP*... *SNAP*... *SNAP*... for a whole hour, while she was falling asleep in front of the TV.
I have decided how to convert every single unit, and what type of armour to make. I will try to be a stricked to history as possible.
At first, I was thinking of using the 2 metal butcher models as my vestal/butchers, all covered in toga, with added long hair, but I thought I might be better off selling those models, and using ordinary bull bodies or selfsculpting them. To make them more gory, and less "damsel of the lake-style" I was thinking of putting a liver in one of their hands, and a knife in the other, with a dead animal at her feet, since liver was used by aurispices to predict the future and to make animal sacrifices to the gods. I know vestal are more Greek than Roman, but they fit the theme anyway.

My cheap battallion box showed up and I've assembled a unit of plague monks ready for undercoating. I guess I need the practise on assembling units of 20+
I'll be assembling the clan slaves from the rest of the box (rather than clanrats) by using the cheaper-looking weapon options and no shields - I'll toss the occasional spear in for variety.
I've been looking around on the web for images of diseases (ah, the fun I have....) and have been getting some ideas for what I'm going to do to the slaves.... but that's for my article at the end of the month.

I have gathered a lot of pics and reference for my Roman legionary ogres, and everything is planned and clear (not only in my mind, but on paper too). I am uncertain about two main issues: 1-the maneaters: on the looks point of view, having them look like gladiators is awsome and very nice looking, but this is a fluffy army, and gladiators, in a roman legion don't really fit; yet, they will break the all military look of the army, which is good for the eye... I am beat.
2-I am also beat in regards of the Bull Rhinox rider. I was thinking that having a BRR looking like Maximus (at the beginning of the movie "The Gladiator") yelling: "on my signal, unleash hell" on a barded horse/rhinox, with wolf fur on his shoulders, would be stunning; yet, having an ogre on chariot pulled by 2 baby rhinoxes is also quite a nice idea...
Which one would you prefer?

It will be quite a complex army:
IGs will have: helmet with vertical crest (like the one shown above), tower shield, lance-like GW, armour; cape; leg pads-armour
Bulls will have: armour, leg pads-armour and gladio (small sword) (no helmet)
the armour will be this:
Tyrant/centurion: will have helmet (with horizontal crest), body armour (shaped like a naked body, with 3D decorations), skirt-like armour, long cape.
BSB will be modeled like an aquilifer, with lion head and fur over his shoulders.
The point is that all ogres are the same; what distinguishes them is the armour, and the details, since, as you can see, the more important the ogre is, the more detail he has.

One thing you could do as well, is use the p-monks sticks as weapons on the slaves, I´m going to do that on my slaves. I think it´s fitting skaven trust noone and the slaves are there to die anyways, so maybe they wouldn´t give their slaves real weapons. It´s also becouse you get a least one annoyingly big hand less.

I will sculpt the armour with putty: apart the fact that plasticard is hard to recover here in Itayl, and I would have to order it from abroad, it will be a hell to model on rigid surfaces, without looking funny and bulky. I'll do it with provreate, in 40-60%.

Pics of the test model today (hopefully).

The grey stuff (procreate) is better at some things, but not so god at others I find. The ability to vary the mix to create different properties is a great bonus but I still find Green Stuff better than Grey for things with lots of detail like fur and chainmail, whilst grey stuff is amazingly easy to smooth out, and a lighter grey mix makes sharp edges much more viable than green. Overall, I think it's great stuff, and on the whole better to use than GS, but I'd still keep sopme of the classic green stuff arouns for certain details
Thanks for the complements guys

I've added the first few bits of fluff for the Church of the Broken Sword in the Maw pit Sagas. The second installment's now up:
Forum Primer: http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=7241.0
ikim15 Mar 2007
I am updating this as I get along. I have finished the shoulders, and added the cape. I have also added the knee pads, but I droped the idea for two reasons: 1.they are not really needed, and adding that much detail, in a "normal" trooper takes too long; 2.they don't look too fitting, after all, and might break the whole look.
The model is finished, now, apart the shield and the weapon. I will make the bent, tower shields, from onw of those huge vitami jars: I will cut the plastic, which is already bent, and add a gut plate in the center (so to keep the ogreish look). As for the weapon, I will give him a lance, with a big blade on top, so it is a lance, but still great-weapon looking.
All in all, the model took me about 60 minutes to modify (not counting putty resting time) (20 minutes for the helmet; 30 minutes for the armour; 10 minutes for the cape), so, in about 7 hours, I should be able to modify the IGs of both units... I really have got to get me a dey off work...

Ikim, great job on the armor! As a big fan of Roman stuff in general, you've done an amazing job. I like the gut-plate buckler on the tower shield.

Great looking ogre Ikim! I know you pretty much have everything planned out, but I do have 2 small suggestions ot bear in mind
1 - the gut plate buckler on the shiled looks excellant but my dim memory of romans from high school history seems to recall them stomeimes having a spike in the iddle of the shield. Is this right? IIf aso, some of the iron gut gut plates would look even better
2 - have you thought about giving him one of those loincloth style things (ah my ignorance of roman imagery and history is crippling!) I think they're strips of studded leather which hung down over the roman's kilts
Anyways, excellant test mini, looking forward to your first article!
thanks Corai

ikim16 Mar 2007
@Corai: I thought about adding the leather strips, but that is something I'll do later on, when both units are done, since I want to finish them in a whole, first. As per the "spike in the middle of he shield", I have seen both versions: with and without. I have some left over IG gutplates, and I'll try to add those next time. thanx for the tip.
I am glad you like it.
Last night, after I posted these pics, Serena went to bed, and I worked on more helmets. In an hour, whatching Dr.House M.D. (great show, BTW) I did 3 of them, so the heads of a whole unit are done.

ikim16 Mar 2007
@Ghworg: I am glad you like the model... today i built the second model of the unit, and tomorrow I will try to finish the unit, building the other 2. i will have to go buy some cobles-stone platicard, at a store near my house, since I will have them walk on roman-like roads.
As per the triarii (triarius is the singular form, being a word of the 2nd declination) were soldiers with a specific role: they were placed in third line (that is why they are called Triarius, as per third), behind the Hastati and Principes, who were usually equipped with javelins. Triarii were, in fact, equiped with a lancia, gladio and scuta (shield), and were the bulk of the CC Roman Legion (just like our IGs).

Simply amazing Ikim. The helmets look great, the capes are natural, and I really like the infusion of Ogre bits in the Spears and Shields. The leg-lengthening probably makes them a bit taller than a standard Ogre - care to show a size comparison?
One question - for the "Praetorian"-style banner, why use plain wooden shields, and not gut-plates? It looks great - don't get me wrong - I just find that curious.
I'm really looking forward to the final article, guys.

Nice one, Corai, I especially like the chain mail. Yet, I have found out using plasticard for plate armour make the armour too thick and "unrealistic", since it is quite hard to make it adhere to the mini, properly, and that is the reason I did my pretorian armour with putty, instead of plasticard.
Anyway, the horse looks like a chaos steed, indeed, yet, to make it look like it could actually be St4, I would add more spikes, here and there. Good job, man, looking forward to seeing the project evolving.

thanks, yeah the plasticard turned out to be a nightmare to work with. It took more than a few attempts and sketchy recollections of high school technology to work out what shape to cut the arnmour to make it fit how I wanted. I may try just using procreate to do the armour on another one

wow, those boys really are beefy. I think the general definaltey needs bulking up to order them around. As for the models, it's up to you really. If you think doing another unit of praetorians would run the risk of being too samey then break it up wit hthe general, but getting the bulk of the units out of the way allows you to spend more time on your general. (so I was no help there at al then!)

I take your point theres not much room on the front plate to have it vertical, in my mind I had it horizotal, Well thats how I had it pictured in my mind so yes it should work.
