A tale of Four Gamers - are you interested?

original thread ↗

Just like a maneater absorbing the culture of the other races around him, we here at the stronghold have decided to appropriate an idea from elsewhere. The Tale of Four Gamers.

For those of you not famililar with htis, it began in White Dwarf quite a few years ago now, where four of the staff were allowed to spend a certain amount each month on an army and would write an article detailing their progress at the end of the month, complete with pics of all the mdoels htey had bought and painted this month. At the end of the series, the four gamers chose armylists absed on what they had built up in their armies and lpayed a hugge game at the end to determine who would arise the victorious gamer.

Our version will run in a similar manner. Four Gamers will, each month, have an allowance (of their own money I hasten to add) they can spend on their army. Where our idea diverges frm White Dwarf's is that not being an official GW publication, we can get our miniatures from a number of sources. So long as you don't spend over the allotted amount each month, the mini's can be bought from websites, second hand from eBay, from trading posts etc.

Although they can use any of the help available here in the forum, each month each member must write up a report of what they have done with the money this month and provide pictures of the models added to the army. This will be added to the main website.

At the end of the event, the four gamers will meet up in real life and choose a 500 point list each then compete in a climactic 4 way battle report!

But how can an international forum such as the Ogre Stronghold feasibly have 4 members gather together I hear you ask? We intend to use the events GW runs as a meeting place. For example, the UK Games Day allows bring and battle games so four UK gamers could meet at the Gamesday and play the big game there.

We are only planning on running one ToFG at a time, however as one ends, if it is successful, then we will move on to another in another part of the world.

If you are interested in being one of the four featured gamers please send me a PM with a pitch, what army you would plan to build, and what Gw event you are planning to attend that other players could meet at (e.g. UK GD, one of the US GT's, NZ GD etc).

Before putting your name forward, please be aware this is a committment and every applicant must be willing and able to
- Attend a Games-Workshop run event such as a Gamesday where the big game can be held.
- Spend £40 (or equivilent) in the first month and £20 (or equivilent) each subsequent month for a set number of months.
-Be prepared to write a detailed and interesting article each month.
-provide qulaity photogrpahs of your painted models each month
-Be willing to start a brand new army. It's okay to tread new ground and revisit an army you've collected i nthe past but this must be made with al new models and built from the ground up

When we have four solid applicant who are going to a single event the moderator team will decide who will be the first four gamers and which country etc it will take part in.

Please feel free to use this thread to discuss this, ask questions, tell me it's a stupid idea and I'm out of my mind...

but all pitches need to be PM'ed to me. Preliminary deadline for applications will be Friday 2nd March.

Thanks
Corai

This is a great idea - full of community spirit!  Corai, give yourself another pet gnoblar for this one! :) (the magnificent seven?)

I think the money sounds about right for this kind of project.

how long were you planning on running it over?
what type of battles (warband/border patrol/normal) were you planning on doing?

500 points doesn't take that long to acquire and paint, methinks - but maybe I'm stuck in ogre mode where that's 7 models :)

about 3-4 months sound right?
x105 - keeping pace with my wins!

Ogre achievements: 65/101 latest: maneater (play in 5 different venues)

Latest Fantasy Result: ogre kingdoms vs. high elves - 1500 points - win!

8th edition: 105/25/12
New ogres: 36/6/5

I was born and bred in a briar patch!

I'm thinking border patrol or warbands would be a good idea depending on which part of the world your in. A UK based ToFG would probably use the Border Patrol Rules (as these are, coincidentally also the requirement for GD bring and battle games) whilst a US one would play with Warbands (I think i've got this right)

That sounds about right and was in line with what I was thinking!

just an addendum to bear in mind when sending in a pitch, whilst I'd hope there'll be an ogre army amongst the four gamers, I think it will work better for each gamer to have a differant army.

Thanks
Corai

It sounds like a great idea. If it works, it'll be great. Are u planning on entering Corai?
2 Pet Gnoblars! I dub them Itchy and Scratchy, for reasons that are too private to divulge.
Would there be only 1 with only 4 particapants altogether? You could pin them up in the gnoblog section with 4 different topics. There should be 2 winners also (best army and winner).

Great idea!

Thanks

There will be only 1 (with 4 gamers) going on at a time. Although the gamres wil be free to use the gnoblogs, or any other part of the board, their reports each mnoth will go up on the main site

Sounds cool, but I don't think I'll have time to sign up this time around (plus it sounds like it'll be in Europe first).  If we do an american edition, down the road, I'd definitely want to participate.

One of the reasons to do it in the application process like this was to see where all the interest was.  We have some wierd groupings of members.  There's like 8 guys from New Zealand for instance.  This way if there are 4 people going to Baltimore maybe we will choose them as its like 3 months away or if there are four going to the UK one (no idfea when or where it is) then maybe we would choose those people.  We want to make sure it is interesting and not a hardship on people.  Alot of you guys have some amazing talent and it would be great to see some of our great generals and modelers come together and fight it out :)
This thread is worthless without pictures
Awesome idea guys... unfortunately i've got too much on my plate at the moment to enter but maybe when the next one comes round i'll have less to deal with and be able to sign up
Took me 2 weeks to realise i have a trade gnoblar, Squinky ->

you're a sick man stone dog   excellent idea!
Sounds sweet, and I'd love to participate...in the next one. You see, I'm working on my GT army for Chicago, and I've already spent $160 on it. But I'd love to do one next time with a Tzeentch Demonic Legion!

Great idea Corai!

Ogres have a few good points. In summary, I like them because they make me sexy.
well, the first ToFG is up and running. There's an article on the main site and there will be one fomr each gamer added each month. For this first ToFG we have opted to go with an all mod team (so Tale of Four moderators!) but as there's such a lot of interest in being involved in the next one, we'll see how this goes and get some more members involved in a few months time when we start again

Thanks
Corai

Great guys! Looking forward to all the cool stuff that's sure to come out of 4 mods recording their army progress. Any ideas about where the mods will meet up for the final game?

As I said, I'd be more than happy to join in on the next one!

Tyrant of the Unknown Tracking Tribe
I'd love to be in something like this, but geographical isolation makes it a little difficult. Have a look at perth, Western Australia on a map if you want to see what I mean. ;)

In a future version, would there have to be a meet-up?

Well, poo.  Sounds like a blast but there's no way I could commit to it with my schedule being the way it is.  I look forward to to watching the progress though.  The four gamers concept is a great one.

Cheers!

Is there any chance of this hitting the Indy GT's, We have 6 major games in and around texas, I can certainly hit up one of those.

If there were enough for a southern region I would certianly be up for it!
