Ikim's sculpting class: 6th lesson: add shoulders

original thread ↗

I don't know if any of you are CMON members, and/or browse the CMON forum, but over there, it is quite frequent that a person takes classes of what he/she can do quite good, and literally teaches the others how to do it.

So this idea slipped my mind: I could host a sculpting class. Now, I am not the best sculptor, and there are better sculptors then me, here in the stronghold, but I can say I actually know my way, and I would like to pass out some of my know-how to some of you who don't have a clue of sculpting a miniature from scratch.

So, this is how it works: first we find a fitting figure we want to sculpt, than we all make a sketch and we decide (who ever wants to participate) which one is the best, then we start sculpting from there. I will sculpt too, and show step by step what to do. You do the same, and post pics of your progress as we proceed, and I, and the others, tell what can be done better... so we move along all together.
I will continue to the following step, only when everyone has made it there.

If you're interested, sign in within this thread, and when we have a few people participating, we will decide what we want to sculpt.

Cheers

the idea is great! Maybe there could be more than one teacher? I would like to help if you want. Or if not, I'll try to sculpt the model anyway!

count me in. this would than be the first sculpt i ever made.
i've also have a few thoughts for the model. like it has to have as much in it (like chainmail, armatures, puches and all the basic stuff)

excuse me for my poor english
great idea im in but maby we should chois a model that could be vered quite a bit to pepouls personall armys
Sounds like fun! I'm in!
Good to see we have some people already.
@Kyte: everybody is helping everybody, so we all give advice one another.
@Gnoblar Pudding: good idea... we could all make the same model up to 80-90%, than people just start from there to convert it.

I was thinking an ogre could suit each person's needs, but it doesn't have to necessarily be an ogre. I personally would go for a Bruiser, but we can come up with anything we all like and we all feel comfortable with.

sounds cool, although i only have green stuff and my make do tools, and some wire. if this is all i need i'm in, but other wise i can't join.
big and mean, when i grow up at least.
mabye we should make a list of what we will need as pepoul may only be abill to get sertion stuff whyl overs can get lodes so we rearly need to have a list of tools, wire, putty and over stuff need
Awesome idea and one i'll certainly be following as well as i can as i've been trying to decide on something to take on sculpting wise for a first attempt

Definitely try to get some kind of equipment list for what'll be needed

Ogres have a few good points. In summary, I like them because they make me sexy.

I'm now taking commissions - PM me or email me at kaczystudios@hotmail.com.

What you'll need is:
1.a stand, on which you sculpt your miniature. I used some silicon corks, mounted on a 40x40 base. this gives me the possibility to hold the miniature when sculpting, but when I'm done, I can let it rest, standing on the base. This is my stand:

2.metal wire. it doesn't have to be too thick or too thin. The one I use for the armature is around 1mm of diameter, and I can bend it quite easily with my bare hands.

3.nippers and clippers, or any tool you can use to cut and bend the metal wire;

4.pencil

5.sculpting putty. I use Procreate, but greenstuff will go just fine... the feeling we all get from different putties is different from one another, so what ever you feel like using is fine.

6.sculpting tools. I bought mine from heresy, and I have all sorts of points, edges, etc; but before that, I used to use a toothpick and my handy swiss knife; so, again, what ever you feel like using is fine. You have to remember you need: a pointy end (toothpick); a blade (an Xacto knife is fine); a flat surface (kitchen knife is ok).
These are what I use:

7.water and lubrificant. I usually use a sponge full of water, and what I do is touch it with my tools, so I don't get the "drop" effect on the mini, which makes it hard seeing what I'm doing. But seed kitchen oil is fine too. The problem with oil is that it is hard to attach more putty over the oiled putty; again, use what ever you feel confy with.

8.paper tissue.

9.a pin vise. This is something I usually use since I add arms later on, when the body is half way done. A small drill or a Dremel (which is what I use) are great. Remember to have a hob the same size as the metal wire.

this should be it

what is this so called drop effect you speak of.
the tools i have consist of the GW sculpting tool green stuff and ready availble wire mainly from underground cable. do you think this will do.
''leave it alone give it a rest''
''do you mind i cant hear a word hes saying''
''dont you 'do you mind me', i was talking to my huband''
''well go and talk to him some ware else, i cant here a bloody word hes saying''
''DONT YOU SWEAR AT MY WIFE''
''i was only asking her to shut up so we can here what hes saying. big nose''
''dont you call my husband big nose''
''well he has got a big nose''
''what was that?''
''i dunno i was to busy talking to big nose''
This is a great idea Ikim i'm in! icon_lol

The drop effect is when you put your sculpting tool inside glass full of water, to lubricate it, and a big drop of water forms on your tool.
As soon as you put the tool on the mini, the big drops is transfered on it, making hard to see under it.
This is the drop effect
