The Nordic Giants are coming! updated 2/2

Hi, my turn to make a gnoblog.

My name is Daniel and i am from Denmark. I have always liked the old nordic mythologi, hence my ogres will not actually be ogres, but the giants from norse mythologi. I'm sorry, but i don't know the English names for the characters, any help here would be great.

The idea for this army is, that when Skrymer (my tyrant) one day would assemble his army, it will be a terrifying sight to see... wizards, giants, warmachines and everything big. Later I will make characters to go with a frostgiant theme. As you can see, some of my "giants" will have horns, thats my artistic intrepertation  . ENJOY

why are the tyrants legs hairy?

that's awsome! Is the tyrant's body scratch-built, or a modyfied giant body?

The body is scratchbulid, wire and a putty you have to bake. It is cheaper then greenstuff, so I use it to make the "core" of my model. I will use giant head and hands because im lazy... or not talented enough, can't remember.

is it completely made out of greenstuff? if it is it must be expencive

amazing looking start to the army. This sounds like such a great theme and I'm really looking forward to seeing you progress with it

Maybe put a belt on those pants and some stitches on them to define them as warm pants and not hairy legs!
The basic sculpt of your tyrant looks great and i like how it is developing.
@ Ulruk. It states he did make the main body of the giant with putty that had to be baked. Read the post just before youres   

the putty to create the huge body is quite nice actually.. means I might be able to create a second giant with all the spare parts if I can just get the guts to build up the body itself.. mmm something to try.. 45 GBP giant, 5 euros for procreate... mmmm

1st update weee... It's two pic's of my scarplauncher. It is pushed into battle by a bull like a giant wheelbarrow. It is not finished yet, but I am using it as it is, in a local tournament at/for(?) the moment.

The top


It is made of balsa wood, a lot of bitz and grennstuff. The scrap in the "catapult" is one of the goblin magic tokens from the BFSP box, with the troll skull cut off and replaced with a speartip.

It's a really nice conversion, but I'd make doubly sure your tournament opponents are aware it's a scrap launcher as it looks a bit like a siege tower so could easily be minterpretted. Great conversion though!

It is an instore tournament and the local players are fine with it... much of my army looks different from an ordinary ogrearmy. But youre right about the siegetower look, I was inspired by the troll siegetowers from The Lord of the Rings. It also adds to the tallness I am going for with this army.

I love the sizing of your tyrant, I can't wait to see it finished and painted.  Have you just put him on a 40 x 40 base or 60?

he just fits on a 40x40 base, so I think I will base him on that. In total I am going to have two slavegiants and the tyrant. They will eventually be part of a diorama, so when the tyrant is on display, you don't notice the "small" 40x40 base

Great theme and models from what I can see. I've got a bunch of Norse mythology books, so I'll hunt down a few Giant names for u.

Hrugnir, Thjazi and Thrym are all giants that came up against the gods for wanting to marry various goddesses. Mimir and Vafthrudnir are giants endowed with great wisdom, so they might be good names for Butchers.
Some other interesting names might be: Mogbrasir (the 'b' is actually a weird letter that also has the stem of a 'p') which means 'kin-fighter', Oskruor, which means bellower, Stigandi which means 'strider', Guomundr which means god-protected (and equivalent of Mawseeker) and Hildir which means 'battle'. There are giant names that cover pretty much everything, so if u need anymore, I'd be happy to help.

Ghworg thank you thank you thank you... Yep I can recognize most of the names, they are almost identically spelled in Danish. The reason why most of the names means something, is because the old nordic stories often personified a skill, trade and so on.
  For exampel, Thor, Loke and Thors human boy servant Tjalfe, goes to Skrymers halls, where he challenges them, Loke has to eat the most food against Lue (old nordic word for fire) and he off course loses because nobody can eat faster then fire. Thor has to wrestle Elle, Skrymers mother (age) and he loses. Tjalfe has to race against Hu (thought) and again loses.
   Lue (fire) is going to be my gorger, the model is almost finished, so if you could find his English name to me, I would be really glad.
   Two other names I wouls like to know, is Skrymers, Skrymer is not his real name, but one he uses in disguise, Udgaardsloke is his real name (Outgaardsloke? don't know i that helps, it's the direct translation fraom Danish to English). The other name is for a giant woman that lives in the "ironforrest", and which gives birth to giants resembling wolfes, she will be my hunter.
Loke is going to be one of my butchers. I don't know if i should make Elle a butcher, kind of a bummer your Tyrant brings his mom to a battle. I am also considering making a huge claygiant (name morkurkalfe, means clay something?) and then let him count as a unit of gnoblars. His story goes like this. The giants made him huge and out of clay. They gave him the heart of a horse and then he was ment to fight Thor. But when he saw Thor he wet himself and run off... Kinda gnoblarish.

Kyte. It's the instore in Viborg, you can see our town thread. The balsawood is ordinary balsa, I just cut deep grains in every piece and worked the edges to make it look weathered.

Let me see what I can do.
Udgaardsloke in English is Utgardaloki, which means 'wilderness-loki'. Skrymer in English is Skrymir which means 'brawler'.
Lue is Logi in English
(an idea for another Gorger would be Grendel, a humanoid monster that dwells in a cave and is one of the many foes of Beowulf)
The clay giant is Mokkurkalfi in English which bafflingly means 'cloud-calf'. Perhaps u can explain that to me: seems too cute for a giant.
I need a bit more help with the giant woman, such as characters she's affiliated with or the Danish version of her name, as the current info is a bit vague.
Ideas for Luck/Sword/Tooth Gnoblar names would be Hunin (thought) and Munin (memory). Maybe Munin could also act as a recorder-Gnoblar.

Hmmm the UK translation of Utgardaloki makes sense, Utgard means wilderness but it is also the name of the house of Utgardaloki.
Lue/ Logi AHA!!! Logi/loki is an old nordic word for fire. Loki is mostly known for being the prankstar god, but in really old times he was the fire god. So I will have three characters in my army with almost the same name Logi, Loki, and Utgardaloki 
Mokkurkalfi hmmm I guess it depends on who translates it, but my guess on cloud-calf (sounds like a My little pony name) would be, that he is so tall that he reaches the clouds, and in another version of the story, he probably got a calf's heart instead of a horses. But the name itself does'nt mean anything in Danish, to old nordic.
The giant woman, I dont know if there is a story with her, or if she is just a character that have survived time, but that makes her more open to intrepretation.

Hunin and Munin are the names of Odin's ravens, and have a special place in a story i am making. So I won't use them as pet-gnoblar names, but thanks for the idea... also about the Beowulf monster, I haven't read that story yet.

Almundis: Befre I sculp something I always make a sketch first, i looked a some viking stuff and made this drawing.
I find this method quiker because I already have the design. I think I spend a little over an hour on the shield alone.

Great work. The first standard bearer is awesome, bsb quality stuff. The ogre choking the empire guy is really blurry, but what I can see looks great. Any chance of a close up on the pig head on the drum? Awesome work on the snake skin!

The musician is awesome. I love the above ogre with the Empire troop; he looks like the sort of bad ass who'd walk around the battlefield swinging the human around as a club.

He has a small stabwound in the back. So the story goes like his, the man tried to stab him, only to have the worst and last day of his life. "Why you gonna go do that?"... followed by chrunchy sound of headbut.
