The Peak

original thread ↗

The smoke wafted through the air to his nostrils. The air was thickened by the fear of the hundred odd slaves he would keep to row his ship. Once again, he had filled his pockets with gold. Once again, he would feast like even the richest tyrants didn’t. Once again, he had killed and razed and destroyed not only a town but the lives of hundreds of villagers. But that was what he enjoyed, that was the life of a pirate, that of an ogre tyrant, and that of Captain Thargruff.

Through the smoke, he could almost make out his mates bringing in the stolen goods to his boat, a boat he called the Peak. This ship was his pride. It loomed over him, loomed over everything, naturally, being hundreds of feet high. He and his mates had built that ship, built that ship from the wood of the Great Forest, when his band decided to leave a mercenary life behind, leave it for a pirate’s life.

Captain Thargruff was not exceptionally large, not exceptionally strong, but what he was, was exceptionally smart and cunning, for an ogre that is. He had come to this position after him, and his mates, had rebelled and slaughtered the old tyrant. But that was all a very long time ago, now Thargruff leads his mates with only one leg and one eye. To his mates he gives a bit less than half (which is surprisingly generous), but he does not accept failure, those who dawdle or who don’t follow the plan during the raid are drowned. How else could he keep his stature?
A Pirate's life is a life for me (what with all the money, excitement, bandanas and knives...)
A very interesting introduction, Matey :D

Do you have a story planned, or is this the fluff for your army? You're obviously good enough at describing what's going on, so you could have a good story out of it.

Here's a bit of advice if you want to make it longer - show, not tell. Write scenes where Thargruff leads his tribe to destroy innocent villages, how he took over the tribe, and how he lost his leg and eye.

SM
Its short, cause I wrote it on my break.
Its the fluff to my army but also the introduction to a story I plan on posting soon (its not quite written yet)
Thanks for the tips though :D
Ill try to get the rest of it up by the weekend :?
