GNoblar Horde

original thread ↗

I like to play in 2250 point indy gt's.

I really enjoy going to these with strange armies and I'm thinking of taking the Gnoblar Horde list and bringing 1000 Models to the table!

Doing an army with 40 blocks of 25 gnoblars with no command and a head honcho on a rhinow with full kit for survivabilty and a basic BSB just incase I want to re-roll my leadership 2 or 3tests!

On a 6' x 1'  deployment table I'll have just enough room for 144 square inches of dead space wherre buildings or other terrain can be placed or my army can be spread out a little.  I think the sheer horror of seeing 1000 models on the table and being outnumbered at leadet 5 to 1, but usually 20 to 1 will freak most peopleout and maybe I can draw their units into flank charges that might win!  also I have lots of sharp stuff and as a Imperial Guard player and Elf player I know strength 3 in large numbers does kill pretty well, so ST2 on gnoblars in 10 times the numbers with double shot should do even better!

I would do soem centerpiece models, with gnoblars overrunning a few other regiments of troops or fightign each other so it wasn't too organized of a mob and had some character.

the main problem is that it is expensive tobuy all those boxes, so anyone willign to part with their gnoblars that are on the ogre or gnoblar sprues please PM me and let me know, I'll buy them or if you are willign pay shipping oly for your donations... and I'll name soem sickly gnoblars after you if you want!

Unfortunately Gnoblar hordes wasn't mentioned in the stuff that's free to use at the US GT's this year.  As far as cheapies?  Some of the online sites have them as low as like 21 dollars American for 24, by my estimation a Gnoblar horde army of 2250 points would cost, filling in all the big guys with Yhetee and such, like $700 icon_smile  I might suggest trying to buy some cheap battle from skull pass goblins and changing them slightly (as some people have done around here and they look cool) as you can usually get a really good deal on those models.  Good luck either way!  If you could convince GW to change it so that gnoblars are allowed at the tournie series this year I would think about bringing some to Baltimore icon_smile

i have to agree that fielding an army of gnoblars would be great fun and look so cool but since gnoblars come in boxes of 24 you will be spending lots of money but if you stay commited to it, it will pay off in battles
Well I don't plan to take any to GW GT's unless they change their minds and more importantly actually bring some GT's to my area!

I do have Indy GT's all over the place in the Texas area (and surrounding states) that will allow pretty much anything that's not over the top and the Gnoblar Horde is easily one of the weakest lists that one could build with no mages or serious threats, infact the most powerful builds would include lots of big guys that would usually make them a normal OK army anyways!

I play a gnoblar horde. So much fun! Yet 1000 models will not be fun nor practical. About 550 gnoblars at most. You can build the gnoblar army two ways. (I think)

1: Horde...the real deal: You don't take any of the fancy types of gnobbos. Just mobs and mobs of fighters and a few trappers. One or two honchos to hold the rhinox horn and purple rock. Scrappies galore.

2: Mixed: Lucky gitz, 2 units of manbiters, flinger bait units, etc. Lucky gitz can hold just about any charge thanks to all of their re-rolls. Anything S3 against them is a joke.

played the second one at first then I started to play the second one. Fun either way. Just have fun with it. Never accept a charge. You have more units. NEVER charge two units into a single enemy. I did that many times thinking my numbers would help. Wrong. With a unit in the flank and one in the front the opponent has miore to kill and can beat your poor gnoblars to a bloody pulp to make up for the lost CR. One unit in the flank or rear will break an enemy. If you take the mega horde then musicians are awesome on the fighters. Standards help too. Every bit of static CR you can get should be snatched up by your little grimy fingers.

Avian has a great article...don't have the link...I'm sure he'll come over and help out though. icon_wink
The ArchGerbil is most pleased to read of one who will try to build a gnoblar horde and will remember to number him among the last to get his toes gnawed on when the ArchGerbil has conquered pitiful humanity!!!

The wonderful thing about a gnobbo horde is that opponents don't have an obvious focus beyond your general for their assault and you can very much afford to lose 10 units of gnobbos in the creation of a trap for them!

As for not having any wizards, the horde has decent magic defence in the purple rock and similar items and the bonus of not really minding to lose a unit or 5...

Another great thing, probably the best IMO, is the fact that gnobbo fighters are Largely Insignificant(Dunno if this is still true for the Horde icon_confused) and therefore a fleeing/destroyed unit cannot cause panic in other units!!!  icon_twisted

All in all, for a "weak" list, the Horde has one HUGE advantage: the ability to field more units than a normal army could ever hope to kill in an average game. What do you do when faced with 600-odd models that will not cause each other to panic, all have thrown weapons, decent static combat res and LOTS of regiments? They outnumber the Skaven for goodness sake!!!

That's my opinion at least...  icon_razz

The ArchGerbil scurries around the cage attempting to flank his wheel, eventually gives up and viciously nibbles at his water bowl in a vain attempt to scare it off...
1 Honourary Gerbil so far...
Soon the Gerbils shall take over the World!!! (Cue evil maniacal laughter)

Suffer the little creatures for they may yet rise up and beat you senseless!

Its diet consists of: Fruit; Small woodland animals; Large woodland animals; Fruit groves; Fruit farmers; woodlands and small cities.
If you are trying to build an army to winyou chose the wrong army. If its fun your after then go the 1000 models for the novelty value.
Has anyone who has a Gnoblar army got any pictures of it. i would love to see what it would look like.

My painting style for my nids would work well for mass painting. Dipping!!
On my command.......unleash Hell!
Yeah!!
My gnoblars took about 10 mins each but 1000 gnoblars 10000 mins or 5000 if your quick. Now thats like 100 hours painting quick dude i would not like to collect an army like that!
I wouldnt probaly take standards in gnoblar fighter units all its saying is 'free victory points, roll up, roll up kill this unit and get 100 Vps!'
If i was you i'd probaly take a diversity of guys. About like 20-30 blocks of fighters with musos to help rally. Some manbiters and lucky gitz are mad. Some yhettes and scraplaunchers would also help immensly.
I have 2 armies I plan to build... money permitting:

#1: 1000 Gnoblars Horde with a single Head Honcho.  There will be 40 blocks of 25 Gnoblargs throwing stuff, fighting, fleeing, flanking, possibly killing something too.  The large mess will be the setback of this army, but I imagine I could move up in waves to allow more room between units as I see fit.

#2: 700 Gnoblars, a Head Honcho & 4 Scrap Launchers.  This force would be more competative since it would actually kill something from a distance with the scrappies and might kill them close up too with the Rhinox. It'll have more room to deploy, but be a bit smaller than I planed, but still twice as large as any army I've ever seen fielded.

I plan to use the single Head Honcho with a Rhinox Horn to give some leadership and musicians on every unit to possibly rally, but more for the CR bonus in combat.

I have watched the setups of skaven players as they send multiple slave units forward at angles so that the enemy will toss themselves into a flank trap or sinstead stand still and be shot to death.  I could do similar with this many soldiers and even if it backfires 5 times and I lose 10 units, I still have 30 more units to try with!

I personally would do the 1000 Gnoblars for the novelty, I'm not sure if anyone has attempted it yet and my armies usually are about the strange builds that are possible, but no one in their rightmind would try.... and I do my darndest to make them work.

It should be fun providing I don't spend too much money on this force.

I definately wish you good luck with it, I think it could be a great list to play and tons of fun.  Your first couple of turns are going to be very long tho icon_smile  Moving 1000 guys is tough, I would suggest buying a ton of magnets so stuff isn't falling over all over the place.  Have you got any gnobs in the works yet?

If the tournaments you enter have any kind of soft scoring, then the 1000 gnob horde with honcho only may be seen as a bit OTT from a perspective of points denial. If you think that a really good player might have the capacity to do about 150 wounds (before saving throws) across the entire course of a battle, that's not going to be all that many victory points for him. The army will never be torn apart by panic, or the usual things you can roll a horde army with, so it can be pretty hard to tear apart. It's an army that, while it may lose, also denies its opponents any kind of massacre. I hear this kind of points-denial list gets dinged in comp sometimes.

Painting wise, I'd suggest not wasting time with dipping. You have too many models that are too small to make it worth while, dipping takes about a day to dry. Just spray them your chosen skin color and paint their clothes and weapons.
1000 gnoblars will be very hard to fit on the table. But don't worry. In friendly games (low points) the gnobbo horde is strong. (Well....not strong...but as it was said before, denies a massacre) I have lots of fun with it. I find it very effective to have more units of 20 than less units of 25 or 30. They are going to run away anyway. More units to soak up enemy fire is better. I do believe the gnoblar horde is pretty strong (In small points games....haven't played over 1k yet.) It is so fun. I don't think there is anything else like it.

Dipping ranks of 5 at a time(surely you would glue them in 5's to fit in the tray to speed thing sup when deploying?) shaking them and setting down would be quick as.

How thick is your stain to need a day to dry? My nids dried in 10 mins! icon_wink
