Heavy armour, Brace of pistols, Tenderizer, Bullgut, Wyrdstone necklace, Wallcrusher.
B'ong
Enigma01 Jan 2007
Thundermace, longstrider , wyrdstone necklace.
Thats right i use it , all you wusses call yourself ogres! No but seriously you just use it at times you need it, and keep using the great weapon other times.
Nothing quite like charging iron breakers in the flank , watching him count up his CR and smile, then wiping the smile off his face as you destroy 16 iron breakers. Oh baby.....
ulruk headsplitter01 Jan 2007
tenderiser, gut maw, wyrdstone necklace, heavy armor, luck gnoblar
greetz ulruk headsplitter
excuse me for my poor english
ShrewdFulg01 Jan 2007
Great Weapon, Wyrdstone Necklace, Luck Gnoblar, Fistful of Laurels. You notice no one uses any magic weapons except the most expensive two for their Tyrant?
"Thinling weapons ain't much good to us. Too fiddly. And too big for the Gnoblars. So we let them little thieves give em' all back using one of their...wotsit wagons. Pointy end first." Cool, a pet gnoblar! He can be named Squisqueek.

If you have a magical weapon don't you ALWAYS have to use it over a mundane weapon?

I believe everyone is assumed to have a handweapon. I suppose you could choose to use it instead of the magical weapon.
ShrewdFulg01 Jan 2007
No, with the Thundermace it can be used as a magical GW or with the template.

That is correct. Don't know how 16 ironbreakers could be killed with a 3" template...
Tenderiser, Wrydstone Necklace, heavy armor, optional. The last one is usually preference.(sp?)
Head Honcho : Flail, Rhinox Horn.

Check the image in the rule book, i always use it as a reference when determining # of hits. 5 automatic hits and 16 partials. All you need to do is roll good. It take some careful guidelines you need to set for yourself when using the thundermace, some situations you will want to use it as a gw for example: i always use the special attack if he is supported by other troops, also , i always use it if charged and will lose the combat anyway, i never use it against small units 10 or less . Always use it if hes in a unit with the dragon hide banner. Ect.... just takes some common sense. We ogres just need to stop fearing to use it , its a great item.
Tri02 Jan 2007
So can you use the thundermace as a magical GW? Now that might seem more appealing to me
Olaf Sunsmasher02 Jan 2007
If your going to use it as a magical great weapon it's a waste. You pay for the template. I looked at the image and your right Enigma....interesting. Though the reason it's not too popular over the Big T is that 33% is a big chance of missing. Though I never realised how many models he can get. (Not as much as the picture, the template has to touch his base)
Vincenti02 Jan 2007
Sure, Thundermace is good, but the template is for killing multiple troops. Ogres already do that. If you stuck him in a big unit of Ironguts (like you should) then you've either got the kill-the-troops part set, or you made a bad charge and you know you'll lose. Tenderiser is great for adding on CR against tough troop units by challenging the champion, killing him, and getting the overkill bonus. If he gets in combat with a character, then he has a better chance of killing him in one round.
Some make the argument that opponents will, after a while, realize what you use it for and avoid challenges and such. Like I said, normal Ogres are already great for killing troops. Do you think a Tyrant with a Great Weapon can't do it well enough too? Besides, Tenderiser is a choice for the most competitive army list, for a tournament. In tourneys, you don't play your opponent twice, so he can't catch on to your trick. For casual play and opponents who get what you're doing, sure, make a different choice. The Tenderiser is the stand-alone most competitive.

Ogres have a few good points. In summary, I like them because they make me sexy.
Wildcard02 Jan 2007
my current setup is:
heavy armour+luck gnoblar+tenderiser+wyrdstone necklace+longstrider
the necklace and luck gnoblar are frippery however, and rarely needed, so going for fistful of laurels might be coming back into fashion with me soon
x105 - keeping pace with my wins!
Ogre achievements: 65/101 latest: maneater (play in 5 different venues)
Latest Fantasy Result:ogre kingdoms vs. high elves - 1500 points - win!
8th edition: 105/25/12 New ogres: 36/6/5
I was born and bred in a briar patch!

My tyrant has longstrider and runs solo, so its useful for him. I agree if hes in a unit something else would be better
aza boy03 Jan 2007
i play heavily against brettonia so have to plan accordingly i use a great weapon rather than a magic weapon as they all take this power i cant remember the name of which means every time they hit me on a roll of a 4+ it eats my magic weapon therefore making it a waste of 30 points lol other than that i run him with a wyrdstone necklace, heavy armour, and kineater big name

i play regularly against dwarf players that love using huge blocks of ironbreakers, and i have NEVER come even close to breaking them with a unit of five ironguts with a tyrant armed with a tenderiser, i hardly even come close on the charge, after that there's no chance. there is simply no way of getting enough combat res, as they always take the runic banner which gives them extra cr, and usually have the one that doubles their unit strength, and even when i hit them with my great weapons, he's still getting 5+ saves. and that's not even counting the characters he's put in the unit, usually the guy with the shield bearers. So, for this instance, taking a thundermace is absolutely essential in breaking this unit, as you can hit a huge amount of them, wounding very easily, and he's not getting ANY saves, which will make up for the 2+ save and the ridiculous amount of cr that dwarves always get.
Because of this reason, i am drifting more and more towards using the thundermace instead of the tenderiser, or at least in combination with it(using two characters, of course), especially since everyone has gotten extremely used to the tenderiser, and goes into the battle expecting and preparing for it. i won't deny, however, that the tenderiser is extremely useful and easily the most competitive of the ogre magic weapons... but some nuts require different hammers to crack.

A reecent set up I've used to great effect is this;
Tyrant, Heavy Armour, Seigebreaker, Mawseeker, Jade lion, and Wrydstone Necklace. Total 298pts.
I had a Khorne doombull with some magic weapon that gave it Strength 7 charge said Tyrant and killed in combat. Begin toughness 6 with a 5+ ward save and hitting back at strength 8 is too good to miss out on.
The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.
Kuzarth Titansmasher05 Jan 2007
This is to one I'm using:
Tendriser, Wrydstone Necklace, Luck Gnoblar, Heavy Armour and Giantbreaker..
This guy have done a good job by killing 2 Vampire Counts in only 1 turn(over 2 games)..

I like my Tyrant to be defensive, sort of
I take: Great Weapon, Heavy Armour, Mawseeker, Wyrdstone Necklace and Jade Lion. On top of this I usually cast Trollguts on his unit
My Pet Gnoblar is called nothing but "food"

No way of Ogres to get Combat Res? No duh! Dude, Ogres are NOT built for static CR! 1-on-1, 5 Ironguts and a Tyrant, I wouldn't bet they'd beat a kitted-out, ranked unit of Ironbreakers with a Runic Standard and characters.
You need to FLANK these things! They're DWARVES! If you have multiple small units (MSU) of Ogres, your high movement all but insures you get multiple units into combat at the same crucial point. For the points of your units, you could easily pay for just ONE MORE Irongut, then split that unit into the Tyrant with 3, and another unit of 3 Ironguts. Using the Tyrant's unit as the center combat unit, use the 3 Ironguts to get to the flank of the Ironbreakers. WHOOSH!!! You hear that? Goodbye static CR! No more rank bonus!
Yes, characters are a problem too, and make a tough unit even harder. But a Tyrant with a Tenderiser is MADE for this stuff. Challenges! They accept, and with the Tenderiser, you kill them and grab the Overkill bonus. They decline, the character retires to the back of the unit. Simple! That character won't fight. Without him, the unit's even easier to beat with your Tyrant's unit, and the flanking Ironguts taking away their CR, you'll probably win.
If this unit is really impossible for your Tyrant with Tenderiser to beat, then, um, you can AVOID them. They're Dwarves. They're slow. Set up your units away from this unit, and don't engage them! Marching 6" a turn (at most) won't get 'em anywhere.
Hey, if you like the Thundermace, go with it. If you're committed to trying to beat this unit with just one of yours, I recommend the Thundermace as the best for this role. However, a Tenderiser-equipped Tyrant in a small unit of Ironguts, with another to flank, can destroy this unit as well. It's entirely up to you.
