I wanted an army that would make women want me, but be afraid to want me at the same time. I wanted an army that would make people gasp and edge away from me when I entered the room. I wanted an army that would make others jealous, resenting the fact they could be so stupid that they chose their army. I wanted an army that would see me frolicking on the beach like in a Coke ad.
Well not really, I haven't even started playing ogres yet. But ogres have a few good points. To start with they are suitably evil. Oh sure Phil Kelly says they are neutral, but what kind of neutral being eats peoples bones? That's about as neutral as Michael Jackson. They look great, and not in a "boy that Brettonian knight looks dandy, I bet all the damsels think he's just swell" sort of way. The models are big and detailed, with huge potential for individual paint schemes. Going with this is the fact that they have an interesting culture, largely based on eating and killing. Two of my favourite things!
In addition to all this, they seem to have an interesting style of play. You can take lots of fairly small units that can bait and flee, and hit pretty hard on the charge. Most units have a movement of 6 and there are scouts and a unit that enters from table edges, so you really should be able to win the movement phase. Which is the only phase not decided largely by dice rolls, so it's where the good players are sorted from the people who can choose to take a million hit points and maximum charisma.
So in summary, I like them because they make me sexy.

So in summary, I like them because they make me sexy.
Best. Reason. Ever.
I don't think Ogres are evil though (well mine are but that's a differant story). I see ogres more as a sort of 'don't care' kind of race. They eat peoples bones becasue they taste nice, not becasue it appeases some dark lord or becasue they get a kick out of torturing people
Thanks Corai

Everything about their powerful playstyle. Their whole Quality over Quantity (I dont use gnoblars except trappers) just screamed COLLECT ME.
The models, ah they were the finest ive put my eyes on. I dreamed of making the Overtyrant (not you Hragged ) so fat, that youd barely see his head... and it came true . I now use him as my Tyrant.
The background...
Theres nothing which DIDNT help me collect them except the gnoblars. I just love literally everything about them.
Munchmaster Look, a pet gnoblar! Ill name him... Munche

my first army, the ogres, , i remember walking into the GW, eyes wide of amazement, this is not my normal gaming style, i am used to pressing some keys, and see my giant big smashy guy smash. there it was, a Tryout game, i was orcs, fighting empire, and i won by a smashing victory! so i picked up a box of orcs, almost ready to buy em, but from the corner of my eye, i saw them, the smashy maw ones, and i fell in love, bought me a pack of bulls on the spot. ever since i keep making up army styles and themes, till i am motivated to actually make the theme

1) My other armys are dwarfs, skaven, empire(just sold them) and HE (infantry based), I wanted an army that wasn't infantry-block based. The ones i thought about where WE, brettonians and ogre's. Of these I thought ogres where the coolest 2) Gut magic! I absolutly love gut magic!
3) Wanted to try something new for my next tornament (in march).
4) I thouhgt they'd be a challenge as to me they seem pretty hard to master. I think my dwarfs are great, but they're kind of easy to play.
5) they are very cheap
6) Noone of my regular gamingbuddies play them

My first army was Hoards of Chaos. I liked them very much because of their high stat values and low(ish) model count.(At this stage there wasn't a purely ogre army). But due to the fact there was only 2 plastic regiments (maurauders and warriors) I kinda gave up because to get any sort of interesting army i would have to spend well in excess of 300 pounds, and I absoulutely hate painting metal models!!!!!!! So for a while i played tiny 500 pionts skirmish games(with my regiment hero of tzeentch and chariot).
Soon i decided to play another army, I couldn't make my mind up but eventually settled for skaven because(unlike chaos) they had many plastic regiments and were great value. I bought the battallion and a assassin and assembled them immediatly(although this took around 10 hours!). At first i was filled with love for the little vermin, all those soft furry bodies scuttling across the battlefield. Alas I began to paint them...each model had many hard parts to get to and i was soon filled with tension anger and boredom. Sufice to say i gave up on them and still have them with me now-i give to my little bro when we play a game(he uses his and my chaos and my skaven and i use my ogres).
For awhile i pondered over wich army to chose next, i cancled out many armys straight away-Chaos were to metally and expensive(i didn't like the beasts anyway), elfs, urghh, elves, i hate the little girly buggers to death-yes even the darker sided ones. So that elimanated dark, wood and high elves. Empire were just to average and boring-good at everything, masters of nothing. Tomb Kings i played around at the thought abit but decided against them, they just wern't my style. This pretty much leaves. Bretonians, vampire counts, lizardmen and ofcourse...ogres. I dismissed Bretonians as the only fun in them(pegasus hordes) where considered very cheesy and people would complain and refuse to play me, plus they wern't cheap. Lizardmen were the next to go-however much i liked them they were just to commenly played and overpowering(SaoD).I though long and hard beetween vampires and ogres. This is what i thought about both armies, please remember these are MY oppinions so please to not be offended if you disagree.
Vampires Cons Pros Fair ammount of models. Great models. no battalion and only 2 pla- Vampire heros rule. stic regiments. Get to raise more guys!!!!! Core troops indevidually weak. Hard to paint.
Ogres None in my oppinion Best models in the game! Low model count. Quick to get i big army. Not too hard to paint. Fairly cheap. Basic core unit (bulls) crush even the best elite troops. Least played army. Gut magic!
From what I've written there it may not a very hard choice, but every time i finally decided on ogres i was captured again by the eiryness of the vampire counts. I went to bed torn beetween the armies and made my mind up that in the morning i would read some articles about each armies fluff, painting tips and gamplay. However when i got up in the morning and looked at the ogre battallion again on gw online store, i was captivated. Suddenly from then on no army came even close to Ok. They were individually overpowering, unique, low in model count and had the best models in the game! I read some tacticas on them and fell even more deeply in love. The style of play was 100% me-no longer would i be fustrated when my regiment failed to cause any wounds 3 turns in a row. These guys were real hard hitters-their core units (ironguts) being able to rip puny manlings down and even take down there heros!(provided they didn't have magical equipment. Everything about the ogres seemed to be right, i could even imagine being an ogre leaving in some freezing cave in the mountains of Mourn, and feasting with my fellows in a grand hall, the air stiif with the smell of blood. I loved gut magic and gorgers and every single model! I JUST HAD TO COLLECT THEM! So i did...

Ogres were my first warhammer army, and like others it came down to a few points -
leadbelchers - just the idea of these models was awesome! cost - the battalion box for ogres is a massive saving, and to get to 2-3k points doesn't take too much investment
painting/converting - less had been "settled" on with ogres than with other races - meaning you could have more variety and have great fun doing it.
no one else was doing it! - this was also a big factor for me as I don't like following a herd.
x105 - keeping pace with my wins!
Ogre achievements: 65/101 latest: maneater (play in 5 different venues)
Latest Fantasy Result:ogre kingdoms vs. high elves - 1500 points - win!
8th edition: 105/25/12 New ogres: 36/6/5

It was the models that did it. I started collecting even before I had the army book. I saw those pre-release ironguts and though "Look how big they are. I'll crush everything!" I just wanted to smash things. And really, is there any better motivation?

Why i started Ogres?
Ease mostly... i'd recently got rid of a large mortal tzeentch army and had dug out some old regiments of renown to start a normal Dogs of War army... it got to the point that the only thing i needed to finish my dogs list was ogres
That just about sealed it as i was fielding 9 ogres in the list i picked up the OK book aswell as a battallion
From there i realised the following:
1) Gut Magic had the potential to be devastating 2) I still wanted troops that can hold their own with no support if they have to 3) Fear - its been the downfall of my armies before, time to use it 4) Love the idea behind gorgers (shame about the model) 5) Ogre Paymaster... say no more
and so I've recently decided to start Ogres as a seperate army
Took me 2 weeks to realise i have a trade gnoblar, Squinky ->

For me, I had a DOW army, and the plastic ogre regiments along with the new rules came along at the right time. After reading the army book, I just fell for the fluff, especially the Ironskin tribe!
Then I realized what an absolute bargain the battalion box was - that box, another couple regiment boxes and blisters and I'd have over 2K of an ogre army. Absolutely the cheapest army to build (GW price wise), units I can use in 2 other armies I already play (Chaos and DOW) and it was an easy decision.
slackerguts05 Jan 2007
I play 40k and when they came out last year i bought the Battalion box. Made some but never got round to learning the game. This year i plan to change that. I have played two games so far a draw and a narrow loss so who knows!!
Low model count is a boost too along with some of the mini's look so cool.
On my command.......unleash Hell!

I don't like painting rank and file troops that much and ogres have very few so that was one reason. Also, I love big models (espicially if there plastic).
Everybody makes mistakes, I just make them when no ones looking! (\,,/) (o.o) Bunny will take over the world! (><)

I had just finished a wood elf army. (I could wait for the new book so I built it from errata list). I was looking for a new project and my mate wanted a DOW army using a Kislev theme, so I painted it for him. He gave me an army box of Ogres so I had to do an army up. When I read the book and got to the maneater section it just screamed bretonnian Ogres and my theme was born. Of course when the rules for Rhinox riders came out I just had to have a couple of those as well.
The imagery for ogres also inspires me to play tehn. Because of the low model count I actually have named most of my troop ogres (I always name my characters in every army). Just love em. Best army for conversions cause they are so darn big there really is no down side to em (Im crap at palying WH so losing was never an issue for me)

that's my version also...but gnobbos are mass, if you take, and THEN you can paint rank-and-file troop
There are 3 kinds of people: who can count, and who can not.
Kuzdreg Skullsplitter07 Jan 2007
three reasons why I've decided to make Ogres my only fantasy army
1: Low model count (42 Ogres for 3,000pts - rock on!) 2: The models (if only I could get that bruiser with the spiked gauntlet & handgun) 3: Ease of painting
