How are you finding ogres in KOW?

original thread ↗

I'm still very much a newbie to KOW but I'm finding ogres something of a challenge. They seem to be a jack-of-all-trades army that is the master of none. They can punch in a fight but lack the movement really to dictate the fight against anything but enemy infantry. Shooting is quite decent but either static (shooters) or short ranged (boomers).

I can't make anything work with the models at my disposal. Multiple units of 6 chariots might work but at least for now I'm rather thwarted by not having enough models. I have 4 mournfang!

Even with chariots, ogres are still fairly outmatched in range with virtually all cavalry and monsters outranging the fastest units. Which brings me back to shooting - if we can't charge them we can outrange them! I've been using two units of shooters (one elite, one +1 to hit) and they can just delete a unit a turn. Especially on a hill they can really put some hurt out. Some gnoblar cav to gum up the enemy and a gunline seems to be the way to go. Three units of shooters and two units of boomers seems a solid gunline at 2k. Throw in three units of chaff and that seems like it's good to go.

Does that gel with others' experiences? Are ogres condemned to be a gunline?

I hope not about the gun line comment.  Seems out of character really.   Hopefully having a game this weekend.

Hey GI,

My experience has been very different - as I tend to fight a lot of dwarves and they are tricky to outshoot. I almost always have to bring the fight to my opponent.

Ogres get outnumbered easy and tend to go down fast when unsupported. I throw in goblin wolf riders to distract or lock down enemy ranged units until I can get ogres in range. Try not to spread yourself too thin, focus your power and hope your momentum carries you through.

~Hope that helps.
I saw Daedle posted something in another thread. He's a pretty good resource to ask if you have tactical questions.
What would be a typical list for you?
Bear in mind I'm a little limited on what models I have. But usually I put together something like this:

-Ogre Shaman
-1~2 units of Ogre Braves
-Ogre BSB
-1 big block of Ogre Warriors or 2 smaller units
-1 unit of goblin wolf riders.

Then the rest is usually just extra but my core force is usually in that area. I tend to throw in a red goblin blaster because one bad experience makes my opponent flip out.

Then my basic strategy is usually sacrifice the goblin riders and maybe a unit of ogres to distract his war-machines long enough for the rest of my force to sweep through. But my battles are usually hard won and I rarely feel in control  :P
