A sad 2000 point game of Ogres against Dwarves

original thread ↗

Had a friendly game with the Dwarf player today, using 2000 points due to time restrictions.  Luckily, we both had lists already built.

My list:
Skarg
2 Bruisers, one BSB w/ Runemaw and Mountain Eater, the other with Sword of Might and Talisman of Endurance
11 Iron Guts w/ full command and dragonhide banner
2 Gorgers
2 units of 3 leadbelchers
An Iron blaster

His list:
Special Character Master Engineer
2 Organ Guns, one with flaming rune
2 Cannons, 1 flaming
Bolt thrower
3 units of 20 Thundereres
2 Gyrocopters
1 Gyrobomber

I recognized his list as the one he used for a team game we did a while back, complete dwarf gunline.  Mine was for another game we did where I went up against actual magic.  We are currently testing alternating phases, so I move then he moves, I cast then he casts.  Roll a d6+leadership, higher value chooses who goes first that turn

Turn 1 He wins and I go first.  I move forward, then he neglects to move other than one unit of thunderers into a building.  In magic I generate 7 dice with no channels on a 4 and 3. I 3 dice Toothcracker on the Gut Train and miscast, rolling a 7 for the table and losing my other 4 dice, killing an ogre.

Shooting phase I fail to hit anything with my cannon, while my leadbelchers fail to even hit any of his Thunderers.  His shooting on the other hand kills a leadbelcher and 10 iron guts.  Passed all leadership tests, but already looking bad for me.

Turn 2 I won initiative, and went first. I tried to charge the now Hero bus into the building.  I needed a 6, rolled a 5.  Lots of rage, as I lost the last IG and took a wound on both Bruisers.  One of the gorgers came on behind his bolt thrower.  His movement he remembered the gyros, moving the copters behind the leadbelchers and the bomber bombed my Heros.  It ended up killing itself only.

Magic phase, I roll double 3's for dice, then channel.  5 diced Trollguts bubble, getting it off.  He failed to dispel, so I 2 diced Toothcracker and got it off.

Shooting phase, I did a few wounds to the Thunderers in the building, and a bunch of wounds to the thunderers right in front of me.  Enough to cause a panic that actually made them run off the board.  His shooting came around....and actually failed to do much.  He put a couple wounds on Skarg and brought the Combat Bruiser up to 3 wounds.  He also failed to kill the gorger in his rear.

Turn 3 He won initiative and I went first.  I declared my charges...Gorger auto made his charge.  Heros charged one of the organ guns.  My heroes need a 6 again.  They rolled a 5 again...At this point, we kinda knew who won, so I decided my cannon charges the other organ gun (At this point we didn't care it was out of sequence).  Needed a 10.  I thought that it was doable, but that I'd probably fail.  I failed...with a 9.  Rage quit at that point with dwarf victory.

Honestly, I went into that game knowing bad things would happen, and that I'd probably lose.  The tipping point for me was failing EVERY charge by 1".  The only other thing that has ever made me that sad: I can roll a 10 for charging with any unit except units with Ogre Charge.  I swear my ogre army hates me some days.
Yikes, sounds like you had a real bad day! Missing charges by 1 and failing to hit anything in the shooting phrase is certainly enough to make anyone frustrated. I hope that future matches go in your favor but as for the battle report great job. It was a good read and I saw the gaming table in my mind just as if I was in the same gaming room.

Keep up the good work and thanks again for contributing to the Stronghold.

It was.  We have a superstition that the dwarf player tends to kill himself instead of the enemy on Tuesdays.  Instead it waited until Saturday to do so, just much more insanely than usual (He killed 2 gyros with a single bomb on accident).  I've just had some bad luck lately, rolling tons of low numbers.  Makes me think I need new dice.

Once I figure out a good way to record my games, I'll start using Battle Chronicler for better quality reports.  I think I need a video recorder or something though.
Well, tumble rounded dice usually roll lower numbers on the average. If you want dice that roll higher then invest in some pointed/perfect square precision dice. They are not tumbled which causes them to not roll as much. Also, try to learn the correct way to roll dice like successful casino players. Turns out there is a science behind getting good dice rolls.

How does your friend end up killing himself on tuesday?!? That is certainly strange.

Get clear dice, solid colour dice have a tendancy for bubbles under the one side. I've got the gw set and they are very bad for rolling low.
Ya, never go for GW's dice because its subpar compared to other companies. However, you said to get clear dice in order to roll better, why is that? What is it about clear dice that makes it better to use than colored?

Clear dice can't hide imperfections.  I've seen some videos on the dice and which are better, I just haven't been able to get them yet.

As for the Dwarf blowing himself up, he constantly misfires on tuesdays for some reason, and does it in spectacularly bad ways.  He scatters onto his own units, misfires with low results on the table, misses with entire units, etc.  He's amazing at doing horrible things to himself.
Oh wow, that is a serious predicament. I can see why it has become a superstition in your gaming club. When things like that happen to me I pay attention it more than most people. Certain things in this world happen for certain reasons.

We actually intend to see him play skaven for a day just to see how bad it can be.  We expect his entire army to turn on itself.
I would love to see or hear about that. Can you post a battle report when this happens? I'm sure those of us who read this thread would like see what happens as well.

I shall.  I'll make sure to record that one so I have accurate data.  It will be amazing.  Now if only we could get him to bring every possible unit that likes to hurt itself...
The carnage, the destruction, the toppling of plastic men. Sounds like fun.
