Motivation and Enjoying painting

So I'm having trouble motivating myself to paint models.  Part of this stems from just flat out not liking it.  Each time I start painting, I start wondering when I'll be allowed to stop and do fun stuff again.  It's just that unenjoyable.  I could try forcing myself to paint a model a week or something along those lines, but it doesn't help keep me painting the models, or get me to paint them faster.

Do any of you more experienced painters have any tips on how to enjoy it and motivate myself to paint more?

I never used to like painting until I started watching stand up comedians at the same time. The laughing and fun helped to condition me to see painting as pleasurable. Plus, the satisfaction of not only a complete model, but a unit or army is well worth the effort, but only if you feel you've done a good job. Otherwise, its just an exercise in frustration. Spending lots of time painting for a paintjob you're not even happy with is incredibly disheartening.

So, the general gist in my opinion is:
 - Paint one or two guys so you're genuinely happy with the results and you know what you're doing (order of layers etc)
 - Watch things in the background, or keep yourself entertained at the same time. Something that allows your hands to be free, of course
 - Don't let your dislike of painting let you do a subpar job. You'll regret it later. Just push through and its worth it.

I find it tough sometimes too - for me, podcasts or TV show box sets help relieve boredom when painting.

Mould line cleaning is the worst though! I just hate leaving them on minis, but I also hate spending time taking them off

All good advice.  Might I also suggest taking a different philosophical approach to what painting is for you?  If you go in thinking it's just some unpleasant activity that is in the way of enjoyment, we should address why it is unpleasant.  Why do you dislike it so? 

Find your enjoyment in the process.  For me, I busy myself reading up on techniques and learning ways to be a better painter and then apply what I learn, practice and improve.  I actually enjoy the challenge of learning a new skill and when it's all done it feels good.  If painting well is the goal, then you are less likely to hate it so much.

Also, don't compare your work to others for the first few years in the hobby.  Look at others', marvel at the good and try to learn or replicate the simple stuff, and get good at that, but only compare your paint jobs to your older paint jobs so you can see the progress.  Oh, and don't be afraid to experiment with new things, it's not always going to look great, but try it out.  You can always redo it later.

At the moment I'm satisfied with the results except in those hard to paint spots on my Ogres.  Before them, I painted a Rasputina Malifaux army.  Most of the things I painted were construct type creatures, so I felt it was much easier and I didn't hate it that much.

I should probably start listening to podcasts, since it's all I could do while painting.  Only one way to get decent lighting to paint in my house, and it involves not having access to a lot of room or a tv.

I know for a fact I have missed tons of mold lines that I couldn't see before painting.  Each time I see one I get mad at myself for missing it, since I know I took time to clean them before putting the mini together.

I always get frustrated at things I missed when assembling the model, but just relax and remind yourself:
1. It's not for a golden demon competition or anything
2. Even if you are aiming for painting points in a tournament, a couple small defects won't register
3.  For the most part, it's just gotta look good enough on the tabletop most of the time

Pride is always an issue, especially for something you invest a lot of time in, but look at it all as practice

Here are my opinions on how to enjoy painting:
-make your work space comfortable; spending hours in a place you don't feel completely comfortable in is just going to siphon off your spirit.
-have something to keep your mind busy; play some music or an audio book, or movies/tv shows you've seen to break the silence.
-paint in achievable batches; overloading yourself with stuff to paint is disheartening. Make sure you can complete what you're working on in a time frame that keeps your progress frequent.
-start a blog/gnoblog/plog; having people give feedback on your work is very encouraging to get more done.
