Steppe Gathering

original thread ↗

So! I'm building up an Ogre army for KoW 2nd ed, aiming to compete in the Battlemasters and Clash of Kings tournaments. Both of them are 2500 points, so the list I'm working towards is:

# Unit Cost

"Solid" Units
2 Warrior Hordes (6 models) 410
  1 w/Blade of Slashing
  1 w/Mace of Crushing
2 Warrior Regiments (3 models) 260
1 Hunters Horde (6 models) 220
2 Boomer Regiment (3 models) 300
2 Chariot Regiments (3 models) 340

Irregular/Troops
2 Red Goblin Scouts Troops 200
  (5 models)
1 Red Goblin Scouts Regiment 150
  (10 models)

Heroes
2 Army Standard Bearers 140
1 Captain on Chariot 150
1 Grogagamok (Living Legend) 260
1 Red Goblin Biggit on Fleabag 70

Total        2500

This gives me a solid infantry base with 7 separate units. The Warrior Regiments and Hordes are great melee infantry, with the Regiments being able to screen the Hordes behind. The Hunters gain Pathfinder (move through cover) and Ensnare (-1 to hit in melee) so will be working hard to try and draw enemy cavalry through terrain. The Boomers are armed with blunderbusses, so will be protecting flanks from fast cavalry and flyers, then moving into support the infantry Ogres where necessary.

Backing the infantry up is 2 army standard bearers who will provide good Inspiring coverage, while the Living Legend (Special Character) Grogagamok provides an even bigger Inspiring boost, with fantastic melee output - 7 attacks with D3 blast and +3 to wound!

The cavalry wing is made up of 2 Chariot Regiments, 3 Red Goblin Scout units (light cavalry), a Captain on Chariot and Red Goblin Biggit (minor Red Goblin hero). The Scout units will tie up anything that can threaten the Chariot Regiments (basically any cavalry!) while they prepare to wreak havoc on the enemy. The Captain will provide Inspiring cover for the Chariots, as well as a few extra attacks. The Biggit is just a minor hero whose Inspiring cover only affects Red Goblins, but he can keep up with the Scouts and tie up War Engines or enemy spellcasters.

Here's what I have so far:

That's the two boomer regiments (multibased, naturally) plus an Army Standard Bearer. The armoured guy is a warlord or captain on foot, but I made him before I'd finalised my list so he probably won't get used. He can stand in as Grogagamok for now since I intend to convert the character anyway.
