Warpflame Special Rule

original thread ↗

A unit of Ironguts (only 2 left) with 3 characters was targeted by the spell Blue Fire of Tzeentch which proceeded to kill the remaining Ironguts but also activated the warpflame special rule.

The questions now are:
a) Which character takes the toughness test?
b) If the test is failed, how are the D3 wounds allocated?

Once the last 2 ironguts are removed the 3 characters become a new unit, so one of two things could happen:

1. The 3 characters become the unit and have to take a toughness test and if failed the D3 wound are distributed as for shooting, so the controlling player decides which takes 1 would on the roll of a one, which 2 take a wound each on the roll of a 2 and if 3 wounds are rolled then all characters take 1 each.

2. The characters become a NEW unit and so do not have to test.

I think RAI the first option is probably the most realistic, but I can see an argument of RAW for option 2.

I think I'd play it like option 1 myself
One, I don't see blue fire of tzeentch could kill the remaining ironguts - the d6 hits should have been distributed as shooting so one should have gone to each character - unless you had a champion with one wound left and a standard with one wound left the same unit that was targeted by the spell should still be there. The spell can't target 'just the ironguts' of the combined unit.

Once that's clarified, warpflame is a little easier to manage, as it would be handled the same way. combined unit takes a toughness test, d3 wounds are distributed/regeneration increased.

It was just an example as i can remember the actual unit that this happened on and I wanted to replicate it for the ogre forum.

The problem is that the warpflame special rule doesn't say that wounds are distributed as shooting. It happened at a tourney on the weekend and it was the difference between 2 BP's on table 1 so was kind of a big deal. The two players rolled a D6 on it because of the fact that the warpflame special rule doesn't state how the wounds are allocated.

My intepretation from the BRB was that initially the spell was cast on the unit (in this case Ironguts) and once the Ironguts have died the unit is no longer an Irongut unit henceforth your option number 2.

There was no FAQ in the ETC on it either.

I think the winning player of the D6 was able to allocate which character took the toughness test and took the wounds. (as he failed the toughness test).

Hope that mess makes sense!
I think it is abusing RAW really but the brb does state characters become a NEW combined unit, so technically the new unit wasnt targeted by the spell. I'm not saying I agree with this but I can see where the argument is coming from
Ironguts get killed.
Toughness test is done.
Effect is activated.
Then te full spell is resolved.
Then you make a panic test because of the 25% lost rule.
And after that it becomes a new unit.

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol

So how do you determine which character takes the toughness test and/or the wounds if the toughness test is failed? The description doesn't say that the attacks are allocated as shooting unfortunately, just says the unit takes a toughness test, which is a unit of characters now.
The full unit at that moment would take a tougness test taking the highest toughness.
Which is 5 in both cases
The characters are still a unit at this point and warpflame can't target specific models, so they are allocated
