1200pt x2 (2400) doubles tournament ogres+skaven need help

original thread ↗

Hi guys. 2am here so ofc the best time to post :)

soooooo... title more or less explains the situation, but to be useful ill fill in more odds and ends. so far i've only been to 2 tournaments, a 2400pt comped tournament and a 1500pt league, figured id throw myself in the deep end. learned the hard way that while ogres are "good in combat"... thats only in comparison to armies that are bad in combat. getting ur tyrant one-shot by a dwarf lord, having your entire army tanked forever by a chaos lord on dragon because of ws8... stonehorns one-shot by nurgle core troops because 4+ poison is apparently balanced.

ranting aside... my probably opponents are all either very skilled (the TK player) or running at least SOME filth. so i figured id come to people who are probably sympathetic to my cause and more knowledgeable then me.

my skaven buddy's list is more or less solid. not sure on the point but its roughly:

level 4 grey seer + screaming bell

70-80 clanrats pushing the bell

doomwheel

warp lightning cannon.

theres been some consideration towards poison throwing stars gutter runners (or night runners, whichever ones the higher cost one), and im trying to get him to maybe run the warpfire thrower because D3 wounds on a  str5 weapon that can stand and shoot is pretty amazing but what do i know lol.

as for what i have... the list is more or less as follows:

12 bulls
stonehorn
2 butchers (or SMs as needed)
ironblaster
4 mournfang
about 10 ironguts
5 fenrisian wolves (sabretusks)
4 built leadbelchers and somewhere the other 4 on sprues.
1 broken tyrant i can fix if neccesary

basically i've bought 2 battalions on top of 2 mournfang a stonehorn and an IB. the characters are all conversions. im open to buying new stuff.

im considering a few things in case that helps. with the 1200pts i have to work with it would be kinda fun to run hunter on SH and a thundertusk but im worried its uncompetitive considering how sub-par they seem compared to other big hitters or easy to put down (i see a lot of Dprinces and Greater deamons)

that or hunter+sabres ironblaster, mournfang, ironguts.

i know its kinda open ended... but im hoping that with what i have and a points bracket someone might have some ideas.

Do you share magic dice?  If so, you may only want a level 1 caster, maybe a firebelly.  Points-wise, you won't get far in 1200 pts with a Slaughtermaster in the list.  Same goes for Hunter on a stonehorn (though I love it, it's 500 points and a sure target for your opponent).  Build to complement your partners list.  If your stuff and style is to rush out ahead, and your army does that, you'll be isolated in your attack with rats a turn or two behind, plenty of time for your opponents to gang up on you.

Cannot go wrong with Ironguts, gives you something your partner cannot do: huge damage output.  Ogres are great too, but don't give you the high strength hits, or magic banner.

You cannot go wrong with Sabretusks, the ironblaster may become a pile of rubble quickly against any other army with cannons, as it's the most obvious threat.

Mournfang are my favorite unit, but costly at 1200 and you need to play them right.  As I said before, you opponent will focus all 2400 combine points at the biggest threat, and the closer you move, the bigger you loom as a threat to be dealt with.  So make sure you either keep them supported/protected, or else run them up a flank where your opponents cannot mass too much combat power to deal with them.

Leadbelchers are a decent choice, it allows you to do some small damage if you plan to keep pace with his army.
Based on what you have, I might go:
Bruiser BSB, HA, IF, magic items
Butcher general with scroll and something else
7 Ironguts, full command, Std o Dis
Sabre
Saber
Saber
3 MFV full cmd, HA IF, Dragonhide banner
Ironblaster
I was going to say maneaters, but they will seriously eat into your points.

You definitely needa BSB.

Als,I feel your pain with the chaos armies
thanks for the replies. in response to your question yes we do share power dice. in addition the army only has 1 general so we were considering making the grey seer the general because the butchers 7ld isnt worth bubbling.

i think im sold on the ironguts, if only because wounding RnF on 2+s makes for a more satisfying combat phase but the option to batter monsters is nice.

i think the skaven have the Dscroll covered if we need one and its 1 per army. but i was considering a butcher/firebelly so i could run the hellheart. theres 2 undead players and 2 demon players so even if only one of them gets killed with it for 50pts i figure its worth.

what do people recon about the thundertusk? the shooting would help me keep pace with the skaven and the ASL helps my ironguts. my only worry is the IB is such a strong unit, and is really my only way to contribute against greater deamons or Dprinces, i dont know if i can afford to drop it.

If you don't need a general, and you have to share power dice with the Lv 4 Seer, I might drop the spellcaster all together, then get more combat units.  I didn't see firebelly in your list of models available, but that's definitely a better option if you are set on a spell-caster.  Level 2 Firebelly with the Ruby Ring and some other items might be nice...so would 4 leadbelchers.  The thundertusk is a nice option, but his WLC is going to be unreliable.  I actually would grab more combat units (ogres, Leadbelchers, Mournfang, or Maneaters) if you didn't bring the Ironblaster, before I would bring a thundertusk or a spellcaster.  This is mostly because you will get a lot more wounds/models for durability and more tactical flexibility (deal with MSU and chaff better, easily overwhelm smaller armies with decent combat power).  Just my opinion and it suits my play style.
