So this is the gnoblog for my Chaos Dwarf themed Ogre army.
I hope to get a basic army finished as soon as possible, but I'll try to keep a high painting standard.
The army I'm building right now is this:
Bruiser - Tenderiser, Heavy armour
Butcher - Dispell Scroll, Bangstick
3 Ogre Bulls - Bellower
3 Ogre Bulls - Bellower
3 Ogre Bulls - Bellower
4 Ironguts - Standard, Bellower
2 Leadbelchers
--> 1000 pts
I have no idea if this is a playable army, so I hope you can help me with this..
Check out my Gnoblogs: -Dogs of War -Orks -Vampire Counts -Ogres

And the finished models at this point:
Bruiser:
Butcher:
Leadbelchers (still WIP):
Bull unit 1 (still WIP):
The first update will be in a few days. Right now I'm finishing the Leadbelchers unit, painting the Bulls, and I started sculping the first Irongut.
Stay tuned

Why no Knoblars. I would have thought they would be needed in the smaller games. And to fit in with your them you could get hobgoblins.
:luckgnoblar::luckgnoblar:
9 gnobs a swordy my tyrant and 2 pack gnobs
My doctor told me I was paranoid Well he didnt tell me but I know he was thinking it

They do have dick hats . Why dont you take it further and put two cannonballs at the base of the hats . Anyways they look great and your sculpting of the beards looks wicked. Were did you get those hats btw?Tri

LOL! Those leadbelchers have got dickhats
This time it's almost funny..
So I'm working on the Ironguts right now, and I'm trying to decide if I should give them gutplates. My Tyrant doesn't have one, and their armour will be the same style as him armour, but if I give them a gutplate, they will be like the missing link between tyrant and butchers.
So what do you guys think?

Like Corai said the bases are really effective with the kind of worn down not used cobblestone. The leadbelchers cannons are pretty effective to. Great sculpting and i can't wait to see more. Btw are all you guys self sculpted? Tri

and you'll be using basic ogre rules with these right? or will you be doing a kind of mix of Chaos Dwarves & Ogre rules?

Ghworg18 Dec 2006
Hey, I've got an idea for u: Hobgnoblars. They're Gnoblars who pretend to be Hobgoblins so as not to be too badly treated by the Chaos Dwarfs their Ogre masters mimic. Either that, or the Ogres have started calling their Gnoblars Hobgnoblars (and forcing them to dress like Hobgoblins) in an effort to completely mimic the Chaos Dwarfs. Ideas for models would be giving Gnoblar models Mongolesque clothing. Tell me what u think. Ghworg

Very crappy Butcher concept sketch. Basicly it's holding it's spellbook and shooting his Blunderbuss (Bangstick). Don't know if I'll ever make this mini, though..

The Butcher will be standing on a collapsed wall or chair or something, since my army is marching through some Empire village..

I love your models! How do you sculpt so damn good?
ShrewdFulg02 Jan 2007
Bas, just wondering, would you mind telling me hoe you personally sculpted the armour links? I'm converting Skull Pass dwarfs into big hat Chaos Dwarfs and I personally am finding sculpting the scale mail difficult. I've gtton to sculpting them in horozontal strips, but could you suggest a better strategy you've found? Your scales just look so much more well defined than the ones I've tried to make.

I 'm very impressed by your sculpting skills. May I be so bold and ask how many actual GW models ye been usin' - as far as I can see thar be only the Bulls and the Leadbelchers as well as the Giant. So how much did ye spend on greenstuff and that other clay thingy?
And did I spy an Ogre-Bullcentaur in the left corner of yer army picture?
Keep up the good work!

bas_231207 Feb 2007
I felt like making a tutorial.. so here it is! Making beards, the Bas way!
First add a blob of Greenstuff where you want the beard to be.
Then use your sculpting tool (or whatever you use) to make the shape of the beard.
Now the fun starts, use your sculpting tool to make a cut in the greenstuff in the middle of the beard.
Then add more cuts where you want the different strands of the beard to be
Now it's time to add detail. Make little cuts in the greenstuff, pushing it away from the cuts you made before.
And the same on the other side.
The beard now has a weird triangular shape, so make another set of cuts in the middle of the strand.
After you did the same on the rest of the beard, use your sculpting tool to redo the cuts that seperate the different strands.
The last thing you need to do is tidy up the bottom side of the beard, so use your sculpting tool to push the strand up until it looks the way you like.
And voila, one finished beard!
The next thing would be to add the sideburnthingies, eyebrows, a new nose, and a mouth.
Well, I hope this is usefull for Chaos Dwarf builders.. I hope I can make a scalemail tutorial in the next few days!

So far I've used one box of bulls and one box of leadbelchers.. and three packs of greenstuff and two packs of milliputt
That 's quite a money saver says I! I don't know how much milliput costs, it can't cost more than GW boxes, can it?
Arr, and cheers fer the sculpting advice, them beards looks amazing! I finds Ogres are good t' practice sculpting GS on, as ye easily spots 'em mistakes and all 'em wee details on a human mini become big details on an Ogre. A very inspiring army, matey!

Yeah, I think I'll add it..
Also, I was thinking about my armylist. Is it usefull to make a 4 man Irongut unit when I'll add a character? Or would it be smarter to make it into an unit of 3?
Check out my Gnoblogs: -Dogs of War -Orks -Vampire Counts -Ogres
Corai21 Feb 2007
that's a tough question. on paper, 4 would be the way to go, but if you knoiw you're going to be including a character, then I find the unit size becomes too big, and ffar too unweildly for an army dependent on maneuverability. If there's always going to be a character in there, I say go for 3 man IG unit
Thanks Corai

gORCUS21 Feb 2007
I like to run 4 with a character, then when one gos down there's no panic test. I don't run them five wide normally, though, I usually stick one in the back, or two if terrain is really tight. Looks a little odd, but is effective. Or you could use the kineater big name so panic isn't as big of a deal, and run the smaller units.
BTW, this is an awesome gnoblog!

He'll be in the style of a Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer. So he'll get a nice long beard to cover his front, and then get some lightningbolts on his .. dressthingie. The thing he's holding in his left hand is the wand of a Chaos Dwarf sorcerer. It seems fitting for an Ogre 'Sorcerer' to carry all kinds of magic books, wands, scrolls and other thingies.
This is the Chaos Dwarf I'm using for inspiration:
I don't know wether I should give him a cape.. and when I do, if i should give him a nice Ogre sized cape or a silly Chaos Dwarf sized cape

A frickin awsome model. but I can't believe that you cut up a Lammasu rider to get that hatd wand. Why not make a similar hat from greenstuff? We know you have the dkill for it... Otherwise, you might want to try the straw/needle method.

I don't really like it either. Of course, it's a great conversion, but it certainly lacks something. Maybe, it's the lck of details on the arms, or the messy look of the whole robe-thing...
It's fine, but not so great for your standards.
Thanks

Corai31 Mar 2007
I like it! the only thing I'd say is that it looks maybe a bit too static for what should be a very dynamic pose. Maybe move the left arm (without the gun) out a little to emphasise the pose a bit. it still looks awesome though. I'm looking forward to seeing it painted

Great stuff. I agree with you on the unit champ. Like BigD said it could have something to do with the sleeves (which look weird), or the shoulders. The shoulders aren't as broad and impressive looking as the rest of the unit, and I have to say the model on the far left looks more like a unit champ).

Today I entered a little tournament, and I even managed to win some games! I had a lot of fun, even though a lot of my Ogres got killed. I had forgotten how awesome Ogres are in the game. And a unit of Bulls wiping away a unit of Dwarf Slayers is just so cool, especially when you see the reaction on the face of the opponent ^^
I played four games, one against Empire (solid victory), against a Slayer cult (Massacre), against a Marauder tride (solid loss) and against Wood Elfs (major loss). I just hate those Waywatchers! Grr! :p
After 4 games, I came out 3rd of 16, which is pretty good I think since I haven't played a game in more than 2 years.

It's time for some new pics in this topic.
For a local campaign I'm getting my Chaos Dwarf army back in action. However, it's time for a much needed update. I based them on some kind of ash waste idea, but it looks really crappy. So I'm rebasing the entire army, as well as updating some units and adding more models.
The first thing I worked on was the artillery. As well as updating their basing, they needed some displaybases. For the basing I'm continuing the theme from the Chaos Dwarf Ogres, so they will look like their walking through an Imperial Settlement.

So while updating my army, I found out that the Great Taurus is actually very usefull in my army. Normally I hate using expensive Lord characters on monsters, but the 20" movement is very nice!
So time to build one. And since the normal wings look a bit weedy, I bought some of the new High Elf Dragon wings.. They're almost twice the size of the original wings!
So the new wings are enormous. But do they seem out of place on the model, or are they the right size?
What do you guys think?

Not really of the Ogres, but of my Chaos Dwarf army.
20 HW/shield Warriors with Full Command
18 Blunderbussiers with Full Command (I love these guys, they cause way more damage than any other unit in my army! )
Group shot of my Chaos Dwarf/Ogre armies. As you can see I still have a lot of work ahead..
And a little offtopic, some of my other armies.
My Vampire Counts army. I don't really like playing with this army, but I loved converting the models!
And a little Empire army I've been working on. It's based on the old Halfling models. I just love these little guys! I still have around 80 more to paint.. :'(

Why are the bases so big on the Halfling models? It seems you could tone them down some so they are on normal empire bases and you can get more into h2h?

With the release of the new Ogre book, my hands started to itch again, and I just had to work on my Ogres some more. I will need to do some work to make this a usable army again, mostly adding more Bulls to make bigger units, and adding Leadbelchers to reach the new minimum unit size. So as usual, I started with the most useless thing I could do; sculpt some Gorgers. They are inspired by an awesome 3rd ed model, and to me they're the essence of what Gorgers should be. Or maybe I should use them as Yhetees... what do you guys think?
I will add a better picture soon when I have some more WIP stuff to show

That mini was based on an actual mythical creature... possibly the Patagonians. Any idea what it really was? Anyhow, they look great. Fluffwise they work much better as gorgers than yhetees (because the gorgers are mutant freaks).

They're not painted yet, so they might end up in a Chaos Dwarf Horde. But I also need a load of those hats for my Bulls so they might get cut up
At the moment I'm having lots of fun sculpting, but I have no idea what is actually useful. My Bulls will need some reinforcements eventually, and so do the Ironguts. So I guess I'll start there.
I tried to make some better pics of my Gorgers, but I guess I'll have to try again later with some sunlight.
Here they are. First my two Gorgers:
And a WIP of my first Maneater. The entire unit will be based on 3rd ed Chaos Dwarfs, and I'll leave it to you guys to find out which model this guy is based on.

I've started sculpting work on my Big monster.. (I haven't decided if it's a Stonehorn or Thundertusk). It's VERY wip.. I've just started the detailwork with GS, the milliput is just a basic shape.
I want to use these horns, but I'm not sure if they're too big, or if they're enough like bullshorns to fit..
So let me know what you think

I think they're too big, but I'd have to wait and see them on the finished beasty to know for sure. Is enough of the body ready that you can do a mock up? At the very least I expect you'll need to shorten them a bit. Is this going to be a bale taurus?

It's difficult to tell. Based on that photo it looks like the horns could use shortening by about 1/4". But I can't say for sure because of the angle, and your hand. Will there be enough gubbinz on the model to counterbalance the horns if they are uncut?

just a thought about you cutting up more chaos dwarf hats for your ogre bulls. You seem to skilled at sculpting and modeling, how hard would it be for you to cast some of those hats for your bulls? *cough* It's a bit dusty here, but I swear I have been working on my Ogres. As this is the site where all this crazyness started, I figured I needed to show show pics here
So let's go!
First thing is an Ironblaster!
Choo choo!
I also finished a couple more Ironguts for the almost standard Irongut horde. Here are some unit filler WIPs.
This little guy has been hit by a Boltthrower or stabbed by a spear and is now feeling the results. He's even lost his hat! Poor little fellow :'(
And the second unitfiller, a charging Ogre. He should look like he's running, but that doesn't really show on this picture. I'll make some better ones once they're painted later this week
They both have been painted, but I didn't photograph them yet...
Up next is a unit of Mournfangs. I'm waiting for the bitz, and I'm really looking forward to getting started! First priority are my Chaos Dwarfs though, who I have to update/finish for the upcoming tournament season
