Imperial Guard with Ork Allies 2000 point list

original thread ↗

Hi guys. Today I'm looking for some help on building my 40k army project. I have always loved Orks and have recently started buying Eisenkern models and deiced to build a Guard army. Then I thought why not put them both together and se what happens. So here I am asking around for help on building a competitive list that features a main Guard force with Ork allies. Should I create two massive tides of bodies? Go Vet Mech Guard and Ork Mech? Any tips or lists are very much appreciated so thanks in advance.

P.S. I'm leaning towards making a Vet Mech list with a Deffwing mob for backup. What are your thoughts on this?

I know nothing about imperial guard, as I think we have already established in other threads. Orks on the other hand I used to know allot about!  :D

Before diving in with a list I would ask yourself what you want the army to do and why? If your IG (im calling them that because I cant remember what they are called now) is going to be loads of troops in units with Chimeras then I would make the Ork part of the army completely the opposite. Not because it will make it a better or more viable army, but because it will be more enjoyable to paint and build.

If you do two massive horde armies, eventually you will get bored of doing them (probably) and move on to something else.

As far as Orks go I would consider going with Meganobz or their current equivalent as they are rock hard, the mini Stompa things they now have and a good sized unit of Kult of speed boyz on bikes.

If your IG army is "all tank no flank" then I would just paint hundreds of boyz in trukks and use them as cannon fodder to mob your opponent while the IG tanks just pick off your opponents big units.

Pity you weren't around two years ago....I virtually gave my Ork army away in the end. I think in total I sold it for about £120. It cost about £4000+ to build; such was mu loathing for 40k at the time.

We all do daft things!  :D

here is one of the only pictures I have left of them, this was about half-way through the build.

Ahhhhhh, memories!  :D

Thanks again for the reply Gnoblar_Herder. Ya, I wish I was around to pick up that nice looking Ork army but I got to go with what I have. As for the Meganobz, I'm defiantly leaning towards that as my allied Orkz but I'm also thinking of kitting them out to be count as Wolf Guard if I ever feel feisty. Having two rule sets for a single army is very appealing. If you want to follow my work I created a Gnoblog for my project. Just look for the Blood Moon Rises topic and you'll find me. Let me know how that Ogre Guard force is coming along. I'll see ya around the forums friend.

IG and Orks is by far my most fun ally combo, as the two easily plug one another's weaknesses.
Orks have good combat, but poor anti-tank, whilst IG are the direct opposite. So, if you are focussing on having IG as your core, you must now decide how you are going to go about your FoC:
HQ's: Techpriests are awesome for tanks, and Priests are sexy in big blobs of Plasma Guardsmen.
Troops is where you have the biggest choice: Do you want small, but faster Veteran squads for objectives, or big IG blobs with Objective Secured? This determines the rest of your army.

I run Orks as my core, with 60 Slugga boys for combat, and 40 Gretchin for back field objectives. Nobz in trukks and bikes rush forward to destroy anti-infantry and heavy troops.
My IG consist of Veterans just to fill troops, and the rest go into Tanks. These powerful AP tanks are deployed to destroy Vindicators, Leman Russes, and punish MC's. I have had great success with this, and it would be easy to mirror this army with IG as the core.
That is a great idea Brainfreezer. However, I'm leaning towards having Meganobz or Bullyboyz as my Ork allies. What do you think of this? Is it a good use of Ork as Guard allies or is another setup better in your opinion?

Orks as guard allies are fine, but remember about using Allies:
0-1 Elites. So having Manz in your Ork allies is fine, but remember you can only have 1 unit of them.
I don't believe you can have the Bullyboyz formation of 4 Warbosses and 4 Nob units, because your Warlord must be one of the Ork warbosses, i,e making your Orks the core and your Guard the allies.

What do you want from your core FIRST? The allies rebound off of this selection.
Well Brainfreezer, I was thinking of using Guard Vets as my core and placing them in vehicles to transport them. Also the Bullyboyz formation doesn't require a Warboss at all. A Bullyboyz formation is only 3 groups of 5 Meganobz that are fearless, cause fear and have 1+WS. Since this is a formation and not an ally force comp I was under the impression that 0-1 Elites rule didn't apply. If that is not the case please tell me.

Anyway I'm looking to build a Vet Guard with this Bullyboyz formation. So, if I was not clear before I hope I am now.

Ah, my mistake, thanks for the clarification!
Yes, that army could work, so long as your Allied Army has a HQ and a Troop unit, and is perfectly legal. Just be careful:
Vets in Transports want to be fast, but don't have the numbers or the armour to go grabbing objectives in the open dirt, so hug cover as much as possible here. Orks are much more suited to this job IMO, as spamming Ork boyz in Trukks was (and still is) a very competitive choice for Objective games.
The Manz would definitely need their own transports, preferably fast Trukks to get them to hammer into enemy shock units, or tie down hordes that might eat your Guardsmen.
To cover these guys, I reccomend some heavy artillery to destroy enemy tanks, as 3 units of Manz might be stretched thin to destroy both Infantry and Tanks.
