Competitive Ogre Army lists

Greetings fellow ogres. I'm new to the Stronghold and Ogre Kingdoms in general so I would like your help on creating some competitive lists for tournaments. I want to have an army planed for any amount of allowed points. The points levels that I am looking to make lists for vary between 1000 to 3000 since tournaments vary between those two numbers. Any help or comments will be appreciated, so thanks in advance for your help.

I don't play in Tournaments. Never have and have never wanted to. The whole idea puts me off. I have never played a game purely with the sole purpose of winning in mind. When I first started playing WFB many many years ago, I played an O&G army and never actually won a single game in about 7 years! They were some of the best games I ever played and I had the most fun playing wargames that in have ever had! Hence why over 20+ years later I am still playing.

I guess the correct answer (if there is such a thing) is to aim for the 2500 mark. That seems to be about the most comfortable and if its a standard competitive list that doesn't change too much then that would make sense.

Its the boredom factor that would get to me! Its like watching that Wargamer Matt (?) dude from miniwargaming playing the same Ogre list year in year out, and never winning or changing up his pretty dire list. 

I would aim for doing 3000(+) points just so, if the fancy took me, I could do the 3 Stonehorn list, or a Skrag or Golgfag list just for fun. I suppose you can come up with a super-cheese list at around 2500pts that should be able to hold its own against most comers; but never owning a giant? Or Yhetees? Only running 2 Ironblasters and never a Scraplauncher? Never ever putting Greasus on the table (which I almost guarantee 99% of us have never done!) ?
It all sounds a bit soul-less and where is the fun in not being able to turn up to a game knowing that you are going to lose, but having the most fun list your mind can come up with! Those are the games I always remember!

Never running a list that has 5x50 Gnoblars? Your missing a evening of drunken hilarity and opponent annoyance!

People often comment more when they have something to work from/ change. Here is just that a basic list;

- lvl 4 LotGM, Talisman of Endurance, Dispel Scroll

Bruiser
- BSB, Hvy Armour, Ironfist

Firebelly
- Lvl 2, Sword of Striking

8 Ogres w/ Ironfist
- Standard bearer and bellower

10 Ironguts
- Standard bearer and bellower, Standard of Discipline

Sabertusk

6 Maneaters w/ 6 BoP & 4 Hvy Armour
- Standard bearer and bellower, Flaming Banner

4 Mournfang w/ Hvy Armour and Ironfists
- Bellower

Hey Gnoblar_Herder, thanks for the reply. Again I agree with you on how army faction lists should be built. When you choose a faction in any game you should pick one where you'll enjoy all or most aspects of that army. This is why I limited myself to just 1 no more than 2 armies per system. Trying to build paint a faction so you can choose what strikes your fancy is time consuming but fun if you are into that army. Which is why I only play Guard, Orkz, Mr. Freeze themed Space Wolves, and now Ogres. The Mr. Freeze Wolves are mostly a fun modeling challenge.

On the other hand winning doesn't matter alot to me but if I time and effect into my forces (as we all do in this hobby) I want them to stand a good chance of winning matches. So I create or ask about many different lists so I can use some for tournaments while having others that are just for fun.

By the way, thank you for the list in your second comment. I'm glad to have something that I can use as a springboard to get into building.

You can't take 4 heavy armour Maneaters and 2 with light armour. Heavy armour is an upgrade that must be bought for every model, unlike weapons. (Otherwise I could take a unit of 6 with full command and take 4 with heavy armour. Then I would claim that the ones without HA are my Standard + Bellower and you can't direct attacks at them.)

I would also try get a different lore for the SM.

Thank you Jomppexx for the comments. Which lore do you think the Slaughtermaster should run? Death? Heavens? Beasts? Can you tell me which lore you usually run and why it is better than the Great Maw on a Slaughtermaster?

see! People are much more likely to comment on a list they can change...Incidentally this list is not my work, its just the first 2500pt list I found on the forum....cut & paste! Didn't even read it through TBH! Soz...everyone has to have a starting point

Haha, that is really funny Gnoblar_Herder. Guess the person you copied it from made some mistakes. I really appreciate you explaining where you got the list from. Now I hope someone can post another list so my creative juices can get flowing.

What's stopping you from just reading the army list forum?

This is exactly why I play warhammer and exactly why I have 5 giants, who cares who wins when there are 5 giants on the table

I always think whatever sizes games you play mostly you should have double that in points to choose from, I have about 6000 pts of ogres as we normally play around 2000-3000 pt games so every time I play I can mix it up a bit. When me and my group first got back into the game in 8th ed, the empire player had about 8000 points of things to choose from and the rest of us had about 2000, so whenever we played we were all using everything we had and the Empire player won nearly every game we played just because his army was so versitile and ours were all so predictable.

It does seem that having more points/units is better in fantasy. Thank you for your thoughts Owain_b.

@Havoc: I wanted to post a separate topic thread in order to get some help and opinions on what I should build. Meanwhile, I search the army list forum in order to get ideas as well. It doesn't hurt to get as much help as you can when creating a force for Warhammer.

I have played pretty solid lists at 2000pts for the last few years. I could fit in 3 solid combat blocks of around 7-9 Infantry, 3-4 characters (depending on equipment) and an ironblaster with a few other bits and pieces thrown in to take up the last few points- typically the list was based on: 7 Ogres, 7 Ogres, 7 Ironguts + 3-4 characters) I like this level as it really makes you think and there is no 'fat' to cut, so every choice is painful but satisfying.

Recently my gaming group has moved up to 2400pts with Swedish Comp rules. The thing that stood out to me straight away was 'Holy crap! I can have two Lords if I want! AND my heroes can have equipment! :'D '

Whilst you might feel bad loading up on heroes and lords, it's always nice to have the option to do so if it makes sense for your list. I didn't feel like I got much more out of the additional 400 points, as most of it went on the equipment and unit upgrades I left out of the pared down version. My recent list change went from 2000pt list to a 2400pt list that looked exactly the same but with two extra Giants in and some more character items
