Anti Daemon (Meta)

original thread ↗

Okies just checked out the Tactica vs. Daemons and it seems the latest posts are at least 2 years old.

The Daemons have been getting popular in my area and was wondering if any players have experiences against these recently.

I know the Nurgle beasts were popular as are Plague Drones.

What should we include in our Ogre lists to deal with Daemons?

Characters
OTS seems a no brainer item on our SM and a Scroll
BSB decked for killing?
Firebelly with Hellheart?

3 Sabre Tusks are a no brainer.

IG Star? what else do ppl suggest?

You've listed pretty standard affair already, don't fix what ain't broken ;)

OTS on a SM is a waste, put it on your Tyrant or a Hunter on Stonehorn for better results. 3D3 impact hits, making them re-roll their 5++ can be fun.

Beasts have always been a slog, but that's just about all they are. Unless your facing Epi, they hit like wet rags. If you're facing an Epi Nurgle wall, find another opponent  Legions of Chaos is pretty popular around me, and my opponents are finding that making Beasts Unstable means that they pop from getting charged by any decent sized brick.

Skullcannons are only T5 with 4Ws, so a couple rounds of poisoned Maneater shots will take one out, not including your anti-battery fire from the ironblasters.
Dragonhelm/Dragonbane gem to keep skull cannons from sniping your characters.

Lots of daemon armies run MSU horrors in core so a hunter to vanguard with a sabretusk is a decent option.

Mournfang and stone horns are good choices, impact hits don't care about mark of nurgle!

I'd want to have both a scroll and hellheart, daemons typically have several casters including the general.

Really I think a normal "netbuild" style list is fairly well equipped to fight daemons, take a SM, BSB, scroll/hellheart caddy, gutstar, 2x ironblasters, sabretusks, your choice of mournfang/maneaters/stonehorn, etc. Should do pretty well.

The only bad loss I had at NOVA last year came from the Nurgle Epidemous spam, similar to what you listed, supported by Kairos fate weaver (guy won the tournament, so he was rather good too).  I throw my support behind the Hunter on a stonehorn with GW and OTS, oh how I wished I had brought it.
I probably wouldn't even rate the Hellheart against Daemons to be honest.  Could just be my meta, but usually they'll be running Horrors, who take so little damage from a miscast that it's not worth the 50 points.

Remember you get a dispel dice for each wizard hit by the hellheart. Four units of horrors  hit means dominant magical defense.

Ok no Hell-heart.

I am thinking Maneaters rather than Mournfangs.
Traditionally I have used Stubborn/Poison on them with XHW front rank. However I am leaning more towards Poison/ Swiftstride to try to ensure they get the charge and more impact hits on average (higher chance of rolling up 10+).

Some Ogre Bulls (Ogres) for extra chaff.

Also Gnoblar trappers to thin down the big Bloodletter, Plague bearer blocks.

Hellheart is still pretty solid if they bring a primary spellcaster and its still a good choice overall.

I think maneaters with pistols and poison can make a mess of most daemon units including greater daemons. Flaming might be a good idea vs beasts? Or a firebelly?

Ironblaster vs Khannon is slightly in our favour, but that means ignoring greater daemons.

Treason is a major risk but Rune Maw neuters it.

I'm wondering if Gorgers might be good to get into the backfield.

Ye I may have to get a pirate ship as my Stonehorn to go with my Pirate theme. It will certainly take the pressure off the Ironblasters.

One of the more friendly Demon players runs.
Demon Prince
Bloodletter block
Plague bearer block
2x furies
3 horrors blocks with extra mages x3 i think
2x skull cannons

A second player I am yet to face Khorne themed with 2 Bloodthirsters (no Magic).

Bloodthirsters aren't that bad for ogres.
With all the shooting that is.

My issue is with the special choices I haven't seen here:
- the flies
- the beast of nurgle

I mean a nurgle bunker is nasty but if you have two of both in a 4s or 5s you are pretty much done for.

My tip: try not  to lose too many points and wait for the next game.
You should get a draw but against a really nasty list you won't win big.

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol

For dealing with the beasts i would suggest Skrag the slaughterer with High WS Toughness and immunity to poison hes be hard for the beasts and flies to get rid of especially once his tally gets up.
But then I may be biased as I am a massive fan of Skrag

Two slaughtermasters in the front rank can tank poison pretty well too.

Also costs an arm and a kidney.
One of the best things against nurgle impact hits and stomps, so mournfang and Stonehenge which have already been mentioned. My favourite is a firebelly in a big unit of ironguts, against anything with regen kick off the firebelly breathe weapon at initiative 2 and watch all the asl great weapons cleave :)
Also nurgle is the one time a giant can actually be useful. Flank charge a big unit of plague bearers and none of the giants attacks roll to hit. I had a giant jump up and down on plague bearers until they were mush lol

If one of them has Grut's sickle!

I think double slaughtermaster is very viable these days.

I think you are doubling the wrong caster...

Heh. Maybe. You've proven that more than once.

Still... you ran quad firebellies at Brawler and I ran double Slaughtermaster. Close, my friend, but no cigar.  8)

It would have been interesting to have been able to play those lists against each other.

I think we agree both options are better than double Wrath-Thirster...

*Sigh* Yeah, that looked a lot better on paper than in practice.
