Farmer's Greenskins

Hey there everyone, I''ve decided to throw my OnG pics up here for everyone to check out.

My greenskins army is still WIP, but is nearing the end with just a few squig units left to finish (and a shed load of forest goblin units, which are for another time).

So I started this army in January 2014 by picking up a single box of savage orcs (because I thought they looked cool), then it was a box of boar boyz, and then it just went on from there really.

I'll start with the characters...

Wow, great looking boys.  I really like how they are painted, great brush control

They look great.  I like the green skin tone. Not bright, but not too dull either.

@Powerposey I went for a leafy green as I'm not really a big fan of the almost-luminous look that some people paint them in. I like them to look natural and realistic (if orcs were real)

Squigs, herders & hoppers are on the production line. I'm a bit of a slow painter so don't hold your breath...

I've also got 30 spider riders, an arachnarok, 3 river trolls and counting, but those are projects for another time

Ah, gotcha.

The skin was done like this: Prime Black / Basecoat Waaagh! Flesh / Wash Seraphim Sepia / Layer Loren Forest / Layer Loren Forest again / Highlight Straken Green (then tidy up with Loren Forest again if need be).

Paints get thinned down quite well and a second coat is usually needed on the Waaagh! Flesh.

The skin is definitely the drudgery of savage orcs as it takes the longest, but is rewarding once done.

Your edge highlighting is crazy good, and it really helps bring your paint scheme to life. Some beautiful skin tones on the Orcs as well!

Good painting! Nice crisp edges, really reminds me of the style of painting you see from the GW team. Nice dark tones with sharp edges, I dig it.

I for one am more curious about what lighting conditions and camera you use for photos, as My pictures are always terrible

Also, these guys were my first attempt at flesh and I kinda just edge highlighted the highest points. I think if I could change anything about this, I'd use Lahmian Medium and build the greens up in more subtle layers but since the majority of the army is done, I just paint everything to match.

By the way, the black orcs were done like this: Prime Black / Basecoat Waaagh! Flesh / Wash Nuln Oil / Layer Waaagh Flesh / Highlight Loren Forest.

@Eldercaveman @Conogre Cheers for the compliments chaps, definitely motivating to wrap this army up for now. I have a fairly unsteady hand when it comes to edge highlighting so often have to revisit parts and tidy them up. Time consuming but well worth it. Glad you guys like what you see!

Generally I just take my pictures in the evening under a white LED lamp that I use for painting. It has a movable head so I just angle it towards the minis and not against or above the camera, but more of next to it. I usually take them in the evening too, as the sunlight through my window seems to affect the crispness of pictures I take during the daytime - you can see this by comparing the savage shaman (daylight) to the night goblin shamans (night time).

As for the camera, I just use my girlfriend's iPhone 5 or my 4s.

So I'm at a bit of a crossroads with finishing the bases and doing some unit fillers for this army and am looking for opinions on what I've got in mind.

First off I think it's best to enlighten everyone on the lands where my tribe comes from. When I started brainstorming my paint scheme 18 months ago, I decided my orcs are from an area much like Durotar in World of Warcraft, so have painted them in sun-baked colours and based them appropriately reddish brown to match my inspiration below:


In this area nothing much grows but cacti, there are also a few tufts of dead grass. This is where I imagine my savage orcs roam, hunt, make their crude weapons, beat each other and rally for war. Here are some cacti I found (just eBay search 'model scenery cacti' if interested):


The night goblins dwell in the caves which line the many hills in this area:


There are also pools and isles which are filled with small forests of palm trees and life, which is where I imagine my to-be-painted forest goblins and their spiders roam:

I'm thinking of doing everything but the forest goblins with small tufts of dead grass and some cacti here and there. Maybe a random palm tree unit filler here and there too to tie it in with my forest goblins, which I'm thinking of basing with a lot of mini palm trees and big palm tree unit fillers to emphasize that they're forest goblins. I'm still unsure though so am looking for opinions.

Just wanted to say those paint jobs are amazing! I love how you painted the Savage Orc skin, the highlighting really adds a lot of depth to the models.

It took me a while experimenting with different methods before actually starting my army, however that time spent has paid off as it's produced an appearance I'm satisfied with.

Fresh off the painting line, here's a dent in my squig herd unit. 4 were done a few months ago as a bunch of different tests but then repainted to all look like the chosen scheme. The other seven were a late try at May's painting pledge but unfortunately I didn't even finish the red skin (the first stage of the models). 3 days off blasting through them have turned them into what's below.

Srsly, love this guy. Watched many of his vids in my time.

Yeh his Taetorials are awesome. Real-time, descriptive and interesting to watch.

So I've decided to do some unit fillers in the near future to expand the unit sizes and add some more character to the army.

I plan on doing a couple of 50x50mm savage orc filler dioramas and several 40x40mm night gobbo ones.

So far I have these ideas for ...
Savages: animosity fighting, beating a goblin into the ground, charging off a rock, picking up a rock to lob at their enemies (big stabba style).
Night goblins: animosity fighting, getting drunk next to a keg of fungus brew, fungus brew keg cart being towed along by goblins, goblin entangled in nets.

These models are cool - full of character and fun to paint as no single one is the same.

2 old school Night Goblin bosses. I love these models, so much character and fun to paint (although there was more work required than meets the eye on the one with the shield).

I've been on a bit of a painting hiatus lately due to the brutally humid weather over here in China. I got 5 hoppers and a few more squigs done at the end of July but have yet to get some decent pictures of them. I'll try to get them done this week as this plog has been a bit dormant lately.

Gladly it has cooled down, and look what finally showed up in the mail:



These guys are the last ones required to finish the unit (for now), then I'll be cracking on with my VC.

Other than that, I recently bought another 90+ Night Goblins that will be added to my army in the future. I plan on getting about 125 out of those with some fun unit fillers I've got in mind.

The base insert on the second hopper from the left broke off so I fashioned him a rock base and pinned him in place. The hoppers were quite fun to paint and are some comical sculpts, although the farthest on the right has gigantic hands. They look bigger than a savage orc's... xD
