New Ogre Army

original thread ↗

Hello everyone, I have been playing warhammer for about 15 years now and have collected many armies. VC was 1st, then Hordes of Chaos, Storm of Chaos Daemons, and then TK. TK are my favorite so far for theme, looks ect but they tend to lose a lot :-(. Fun but time to try something else. Bought Ogres when they were 1st released and am now just getting into playing them. Bought a very "basic" assembled army and am going to turn them into a Khorne themed army and came up with this list. I know it's not super competitive I think because a lot of it is geared towards the Khorne theme and not so much winning best overall. Anyway, please let me know what you guys think. Thanks for the help in advance, can't wait to start trying them out.

SM                                           Lvl 4 Maw, Fencers, Glittering scales, and Earthing rod

Hunter (wingless bloodthirster)   Shld of Ptolos, Dragonbane gem, Swd of striking
Bruiser.                                     Don't know what magic items yet. Have room for all 50 pts

10 guts.     full Cmd, Stnd of Dicp
7 guts.       Full Cmd

4 tusks

4 Mournfang.   Full Cmd, Ha, IF, Dragon banner

Iron blaster

SM, Bsb with the 10 guts, other bruiser with 7 gut (2x4) and Hunter with 4 tusks.

Good, bad, Ugly ? Any help will be appreciated, remember, I am used to playing WS 2 Skellies :-) thanks again

I would split the tusk up and use them as redirectors war machine hunters otherwise it looks solid
I'm assuming this is for a 2500 point list, no?

I'd take the Dispel Scroll over Earthing Rod, miscast aren't that much of an issue for ogres due to multiple wounds and the lore attribute. Also, you potentially have another 15 points to put on magic items (Ironcurse Icon maybe?).

Why not AoD or Talisman of Preservation on the BSB if you are going defensive? You would still have points left over for the Enchanted Shield if you go with Preservation, granting you 3+/4++.

As for the Hunter, I assume you are going with the Harpoon Launcher? A Big Name could potentially be more beneficial than the Sword of Striking (especially Longstrider or Beastkiller).

Do you want a killy or tanky Bruiser? The RRoR might be a fun choice here, but so would Gnoblar Thiefstone (MR2 and potentiall swiping your opponents ToP - make sure you go with AoD on the BSB if you go with this though!) or the Greedy Fist (+1 Str, 6++ and wizard level drain on hit).

You might want to keep your Leadbelchers close to your BSB, they are very prone to panic tests.

Split your tusks into two singles and two running with the Hunter for the Vanguard. More drops, chaff, redirectors and an immediate threat in a Swiftstriding, Vanguarding Hunter.

A champion is not necessarily needed on the MFC.

Otherwise, have fun and make the most of your lumbering horde! :)
Regarding the mournfang:

Do not spend the points for the champion, especially if you are spending the points on the dragonhide banner.  Command units die in the following order: musician, standard, champ.  Keeping the banner is far more important than having 1 extra attack.
The other two have covered most of the army list issue

How are you justifying a Level 4 in a Khorne army? I would have thought a Tyrant is more fluff appropriate. Dont get me wrong, i am a big fan of 'its my army, i can do what i want' i am just curious
Samurai Ogres of Nippon

Yes, 2500pts
I guess I will drop the Mourn Champ as more than 1 person has suggested the same thing around our group.

As for the BSB, I had the Sword of Striking and then noticed I had it on the Hunter also so I took it from the BSB and never replaced the points. Could give it back to him and give the Hunter the Harpoon Launcher and Beastkiller. The Hunter is my main character in my theme although he is not the general. That is why I have a SM and not a Tyrant for the army. Basically, the hunter (wingless bloodthirster) and his Tusks (Flesh hounds) come from a crack in the realm of Chaos and he is taking over the SM's army and converting them to worshipers of the blood god. Hence the Khorne theme with a SM. What better to do the bidding of Khorne than a pack of crazed meat hungry ogres?

I love the Idea of the dispell scroll as I have never left home w/o it but thought maybe the Earthing rod was better as I usually never have a Lvl 4 wizard as my general. I think I'll change it to the scroll.

Not sure what to do with the other bruiser, what is better? A killing machine or a more defensive guy to go with the 7 iron guts? I kind of want a Killing Machine since he is Khorne incarnate :-)

Also 1 question. Can you decide to use 4 tusks w/the hunter or 2 with the hunter and 2 to go alone before the game or must it be stated in the army list?
Thanks for all the great help. As an old Skellie guy, I am really looking forward to smashing a few skulls instead of losing 20 or 30 a turn :-)
Sabretusks are a unit so you have to specify their grouping in the army list. 1-1-2, 2-2, all 4 together, etc. I'd go with 1-1-2 myself, solo tusks are candidates for best chaff in the game and then you have the other two to escort the hunter.

I'd take a more defensive build for the non-BSB bruiser, although it doesn't fit the fluff as well. Ironguts are killy enough in their own right but they die just as easily as any other ogre so a character to tank a nasty challenge or soak some attacks will help them last longer.
