I have a few questions surrounding look out sirs. In the brb, it says that they can only he taken vs weapons with a template, then it specifically mentions cannons. Is that referencing grapeshot? Or do cannons just fall under a specific category?
Also, look out gnoblars. What's the point? Does it just make the requirement for LOS checks to 3 RnF? Please enlighten me. Thanks for the help.

Look out sir doesn't apply on grapeshot as its normal shooting using BS not a template. How ever if you have at least five rank and file models its going to hit the unit and not the character anyway. And that's the point of the look out gnoblar, ogre units are small and expensive. A look out gnoblat is considerably cheaper than two ogres of any type.

Thanks for the reply. I thought crapshoot was the flame template. I guess I'll have to re-read the cannon rules.

Grapeshot is 12" range, artillery dice worth of shots, S5 for normal cannons, S10 for us.
Cannons count as being a "Line" template, which is why you get look out sir against them. It's also why a Hunter on Stonehorn hit with a cannonball will cop the hit on both Hunter and Stonehorn.
Most recent result: Victory, 8000 points Ogres vs 8000 points Dwarfs

It used to be in earlier editions. It's used so rarely that it still trips people up.
Man, ironblasters with S10 flame template grapeshot would be epic. Not that they really need the help.

Every time I have used grape shot I have done 0 wounds with it. With a 12" range you are nearly always going to be at -1 for long range and likely -1 for moving, so most of the time you are needing 6's to hit, so if you are very luck you might get 2 hits, but I've never got any. I find if you are that close you are better off charging for your impact hits.

Yeah. Well, usually you can get to short range if enemy are close enough to threaten you. I use it sometimes if fast cav get round the flank of my ironblaster. Obviously charge if you can but typically in this scenario they're around your flanks. Unless you have a really juicy shot that's worth essentially sacrificing the ironblaster to the fast cav, you're going to want to face the threat (much better be charged in the front than the flank!) so you might as well grapeshot. Even 2 wounds is enough to force a panic on most fast cav units. I've had it work once or twice.

Very good point. I think in that situation it is were a try with the grape shot, definately as you kind of have nothing to loose in trying it. But I think I would only use it as a very last resort and there was no other option open to me. I think my main point was if you have the choice charge dont shoot
