Thundertusk shooting

So this is probably simple enough but I'm just relearning the game after a decade away.
Can the Thundertusks riders shoot a seperate unit to the thundertusks stone thrower attack?

I would guess no but am not sure.

Its how I intend to play it too. It's a monster really with more than 1 shooting attack.
Was just checking I wasn't missing anything. As I say I've not played a game of fantasy in a decade.

Yep, all shooting attacks from a single unit have to go at the same target. Its part of the flaw of the thundertusk - 3 shooting attacks that all prefer different types of targets

All shots at the same target and in the front arc only.  Of course you can get creative with where you aim the template and the chain is mostly useless anyhow.

See, this gets a bit tricky. Technically, the stone thrower doesn't have to target a unit, it could target a point on the ground. I think there is a RAW argument that you could place the template anywhere in LOS.

However, it seems reasonable that the stone thrower does typically target a unit and the other two weapons have to fire at the same target.

Well new debate point then. If I hurl a rock (ball of frozen ice whatever) between two units to clip them both can I pick which one the other weapons target?
Almost feels like it might be worth just clipping the big unit of state troops so I can get the harpoon off at some Knights I clipped.

The chain trap has a range of 12''
Harpoon launcher is 36''
Sphere is 6-24''
It would not make sense if they fire at the same target since then the effective range should read 12'' for all.

Also. the CT and HL are carried by 2 different models, and the sphere is the thundertusk's weapon.

When firing a stonethrower at a unit you need to place the middle hole over one model in the unit. As his other units should be more than an inch away you would be unlikely to clip a second unit unless you place the hole on a model on the edge of the state troops in which case you would be reducing the damage to them. Then you would have to hope you don't scatter. While I cant see anything against declaring your harpoon shot against the knights if you hit both units with your first shot, its a bit cheesy.

Also I'm pretty sure the thundertusk and its riders are a single unit of the monster type. All models in a unit have to declare shooting at the same target so harpoons, chain traps and ice sphere would have to be against the same target.

There's actually plenty of debate here.

BRB, pg 38:  "This section covers the shooting rules for common weapons and the majority of troop types. War machines and other, more peculiar, devices of destruction are covered in their own chapter (beginning on page 108)."  The Sphere of Frost-wreathed Ice fires as a stonethrower (per the Ogre Kingdoms armybook, pg 55) and thus is exempt from the Shooting chapter beginning on pg 38 of the BRB.  That exempt section is the only place where requirements to shoot at the same target are presented.

The differences between firing a warmachine (in this case, a stone thrower) and shooting (per the Shooting chapter) are numerous, but the primary concern here is target selection. 

Shooting common weapons requires you to (BRB, pg 39) "shoot at an unengaged enemy unit that is at least partially within its forward arc, and to which it has an unblocked line of sight ..." while firing a stone thrower requires you to (BRB, pg 114) "take the small round (3") template and place it anywhere completely within the war machine's line of sight, outside of the stone thrower's minimum range and within its maximum range ... If placed over an enemy unit, the hole in the middle of the template must be placed over a single model."  The stone thrower does not have to target a model or unit, while firing with "common weapons" does require you to target an unengaged enemy unit.  Furthermore, stone throwers can ignore the unblocked line of sight restriction by firing indirectly.

Looking through these rules, it seems clear that the Sphere of Frost-wreathed Ice is not a common weapon and is exempt from the targeting rules of common weapons which would require it to fire at the same target as the chain trap/harpoon launcher (which are common weapons and must choose the same target).  Additionally, the Sphere of Frost-wreathed Ice need not select an enemy model/unit as a target, and may instead fire at a point on the field, even on that is out of line of sight.

Completely agree with snark, the 2 ogres have to have the same target but the frost wreathed ice fires seperately as per stone thrower
