Thoughts on ETC Composition Restrictions?

original thread ↗

I'm playing in a number of GTs this spring that are using ETC composition rules. For reference, the current draft has them like this:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/106941867/AR2015-Draft2.5.pdf

Ogres
May select up to 5 choices from the pool below:

● Ironblaster 1 choice (second 3 choices)
● Hellheart 2 choices
● Crown of command 1 choice
● Runemaw 1 choice
● 1 or more Slaughtermasters in the army, including Skragg 2 choices
● Each unit of gnoblars after the third 1 choice

May take any Ogres Special Characters

Additional restrictions:

Units cannot be more than 450 points at the point of roster creation. This does not apply to
characters.

All army sizes are 2400 points unless stated otherwise in race specific composition below.

Armies must be constructed on the following basis (in addition to any specific conditions
imposed by their army book)

● Minimum of 3 units
● Minimum of 1 character that can be the army general
● Maximum of 50% of points spent on lords
● Maximum of 50% of points spent on heroes
● Minimum of 25% of points spent on core units
● Maximum of 50% of points spent on special units
● Maximum of 25% of points spent on rare choices

For me, this means an immediate change is dropping Rune Maw. Ironblaster, Hellheart, CoC and Slaughtermaster put me at 5 points.

Thankfully, Dispel Scroll isn't comped in this draft.

Thoughts? Ideas on lists?
Looks like you can't get double ironblaster and a Slaughtermaster, at least how I read it.

IB #1 - 1 choice
IB #2 - 3 choices
SM - 2 Choices

Putting you 1 choice over the limit.
Most recent result: Victory, 8000 points Ogres vs 8000 points Dwarfs
W | D | L
39 | 3 | 33
Yeah you can do double IB + CoC or Rune Maw, that's it.

Constant comping of IB has me looking at Scraplauncher...
Why is a Slaughtermaster 2 choices?

Its not like we're magic phase power houses.
Current win streak: 10

ETC has a thing against lore of death and slaughtermasters can take death, so...

From what I can tell ETC comp has two objectives: Attempt to control power builds, and break up the common "net list" builds. My guess is that they felt too many lists took a slaughtermaster last year so this year they feel the need to push players in other directions.
theviking's gnoblog - http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=29176.0
So they want to see a double firebelly, tyrant list then.  If they don't like death magic, then explicitly restrict that choice.  Instead they want to get at that in a round-about way.
Realize now that my reading comprehension is bad, and I can't take my list. I have to decide if I want a Hellheart or a Slaughtermaster.

I'm leaning towards replacing the Slaughtermaster with two Butchers and keeping the Hellheart, so I'd be fielding:

Bruiser BSB
Butcher w/DS
Butcher
Firebelly w/ Hellheart

9x Ironguts w/ Standard of Discipline
4x Ironguts

4x Mournfangs

6x Maneaters, pistols, poison, scout

3x1 Sabretusk

Ironblaster

Scraplauncher

But there's no Crown of Command in that build.

Maybe I want Tyrant, Bruiser BSB, Butcher and Firebelly?
First I'll tell you what I think about your list:
I liked the idea of Ironguts core at first, however I think you are putting all 4 characters in the x9 group I think you absolutely must take Runemaw with that unit, or it is going down hard.

If you take Tyrant on the otherhand, I think that Ironguts aren't a good core choice, since High Leadership of the Tyrant is useless in a Standard of disc Ironguts group. If you want to run Tyrant, I think you are looking at more like 9 bulls x4 guts x3 bulls or 12 bulls x3 bulls x3 bulls as core.

Hivemind after looking at the topic I decided to think of a ETC list myself and it looks something like this:

370 Slaughter Master
-Level 4 Wizard
-Great Weapon
-Talisman of Preservation
-Ironcurse Icon
-Dispell Scroll

178 Bruiser
-BSB
-Dragon Helm
-Ironfist
-Heavy Armor
-Talisman of Endurance

172 Firebelly
-Hand Weapon
-Hellheart

188 Butcher
(Alternative to Firebelly for Lore of beasts / Maw)
-Level 2
-Hellheart
-Ironfist

323 Bulls x9
-Full Command
-Lookout

323 Bulls x9
-Full Command
-Lookout

340 Mournfang Cavalry x4
-Captain
-Heavy Armor
-Ironfists
-Dragonhide Banner

421 Maneaters x6
-Bellower
-Standard
-Gleaming Pennant
-Scout
-Poison
-Brace of Pistols
-Heavy Armor

170 Ironblaster

21 Saberfang

21 Saberfang

21 Saberfang

The SM build here looks really strange, however I've posted the list like this, since I feel Scroll of Shielding +Ironcurse plus having two big core groups lets me deal with magic threats to core.
Thanks for reading and until next time... Stay hungry!

You have some illegal builds on your bruiser and slaughtermaster.  You can't have 2 arcane items on one character and you can't have 2 magic armor items on the same character.
Sorry about the mistakes, I'll go edit it and I'll post the changes here as well.

Slaughtermaster
-Scroll of Shielding

Bruiser
- Armor of Fortune
- Shield
+Ironfist
+Heavy Armor
+Talisman of Endurance

+1 Sabertusk

I am also playing etc with different list. I am running a bull star and alot of little units for having more redirectors then oponent. with full command on main unit only the tyrant is armed the rest I just put in a gw and stick them in thebsecond rank. I am not running a cannon because with a good charge any monster will die with impact hits if not the s6 and 7 works just fine. apart from that I use grut sickle as I find it devastating. having an sm that can cast all maw spells with 2 dice with casting of plus 6/7 is great. stick a runemaw and nobody will beat you unless you face the new stomfiends
I have been thinking about this a lot recently as i have the chance to attend an ETC comp event in a couple months. I really do feel that double Ironblaster is the way forward with Tyrant and Dual Firebellies. Then that leave me with 1 more available slot and as Dispel scroll is not comped, it opens up possibilities. The only two remaining comp things i could possibly take is either a Runemaw or crown of command and i am leaning more to the later.

Is anyone else thinking like this?
Samurai Ogres of Nippon

That just really seems like you're not going to be able to do anything in Magic. You're basically conceding that entire phase of the game if you don't bring a LVL4 Slaughtermaster. Unless you bring a Dispel Scroll, Rune Maw, AND a Hellheart, I don't feel comfortable not having a Slaughtermaster.
People have had success with dual firebellies. Firebellies are great against elves
And if this ETC is anything like older editions then Magic is comped to in number of dice you can get/use etc

Is it my understanding that if you take 2 Ironblasters that is 4 pool choices?  Am I reading that correctly?

Yeah, it looks like they REALLY don't want double ironblasters showing up.
Hey at least you still get 1 choice. Two skullcannon cost you all your daemon slots.

You can get two ironblasters and still get a solid build. Tyrant and firebellies plus rune maw for starters.

I really disagree with this whole statement.

I've had great success (two 2nd place Overall Finishes at major GTs of over 60 players each, and a 13th place in the US Masters) using a Tyrant+2 (or more) firebellies - with only a dispel scroll and hellheart.  With those two items I can reliably shut down two of my opponent's magic phases.  With kindleflame, I am usually casting like a Lvl 4.  Except that I have better LD (tyrant), better combat (tyrant + two breath weapons), and a BSB that is useful in combat (I like GW+HA+Dragonhelm+Crown, although depending on comp I might go with GW+AoD).

Double Firebelly is very competitive in uncomped environments too (one of my 2nd Overall finishes was uncomped), but it really shines in comp - because most comp packs underestimate it.  Double Firebelly dominates the magic phase in a way that usually surprises my opponents.

I'm not proclaiming it the best build for ogres (but it is seriously competitive) - but I am disputing that a Lvl 4 is required to play in the magic phase or that you need the runemaw+hellheart+scroll if you don't take a Lvl 4.

I have an ETC event coming up at the end of May.  I'll post my list for it as we get closer (but here's a hint:  Double Firebelly+Hellheart+Scroll+IB+Crown).  Heh, I'm guessing many of you already could have guessed that...

-Snark
Wildcards's Ogre achievements: 78/101

8th edition: 92/24/9
Recent results:  My ogres place 13th Overall at the US Masters (78 players);  My ogres place 2nd Overall at Brawler Bash (65 players).
Are those etc draft updated version?  Mine slightly different?
In mine the second ironblaster are 4 points but sm is "only" 1 point
And Crown of command is 2
I'd like to add to Snark that running multiple butchers works. I've never been a huge fan of firebellies -- but I've played Snark and he uses them to great effect. But multiple butchers can work well. Even just a couple of level 2s can be enough. I've run no-slaughtermaster lists under ETC comp before and done well. (If you're interested -- here's a discussion of my list at a team event that I got 2nd highest battle. It's a few years old so take with a pinch of salt as the meta has changed since then).

Ogres have the best anti-magic in the game. You don't need level 4s to push spells through (and there are plenty of items like power stones or forbidden rod to help).
