Brand new To Warhammer and OK

original thread ↗

Hello everyone!

I'm brand new to both wargaming and the Ogre Kingdoms army. After nearly 10 years of MMORPGs, I've decided to kick that habit and pick up wargaming. Back in 2008/2009 I spent a hefty chunk of my time playing Warhammer Online and absolutely love the fluff and overall feel of the Warhammer Fantasy universe.

I'm about 3 days away from moving back home to Georgia from Japan (US Navy) and have decided to purchase a reasonably sizable Ogre Kingdoms army that should be delivered shortly after I arrive. I've also got my rule book, army codex, an Island of Blood kit (it's all they sold here in Okinawa), as well as a Citadel Hobby starter kit. So, I think I'll be all set to get things rolling once I get home.

I've read through about half of the Warhammer rulebook and have read through the OK codex once, so I have a bit of a grasp of how things work in general. I've also watched hours and hours of battle reports on YouTube. The "issue" I have (if you want to call it that) is that I will be pigeon holed into the army that I've currently purchased for a while and won't be able to spend anymore money on miniatures for a few months (it was tough enough justifying the army purchase to the wife as it is, lol). Anyway, since I'll be "stuck" with what I've got, I'm wondering what would be the best set up for say, 2000-2500 point games.

Here is a list of the miniatures I've just purchased:

1 Tyrant
1 Slaughtermaster
1 Firebelly
1 Gorger
1 Giant
4 Mournfang Cavalry
6 Maneaters
12 Leadbelchers
12 Ogre Bulls (Standard and Bellower)
12 Ironguts (Standard and Bellower)
46 Gnoblars

That's it. I really wish there was an Iron Blaster and/or some Sabertusks in there, but unfortunately for me there aren't.

I have the battlescribe app on my tablet for helping me to build my lists, but I've found it to be fairly vague on some things and not include any options for items, etc.

With that said, I plan on taking most everything I have listed up there, save the Gnoblars, Gorger, and maybe the Giant. The part that sort of confuses me since I've never played much less owned an army before is where exactly would I locate my Tyrant, Slaughtermaster, and Firebelly? Which unit would it benefit me most to include them in, and what items synergize with the options I have the best?

I haven't the slightest clue what armies I will be playing against, as I will have to find out when I get to my local store(s) and get myself into a gaming club. I may be a little overly concerned about things at this point, but I haven't even touched my army yet and I've been bitten by the wargaming bug. I just want to ensure that I set myself up for the best experience possible.

I apologize for a crazy long first post, and I look forward to any advice any of you seasoned wargamers might have. Cheers!
Morning Mcbrain,

Some comments:
-Sabertusks are really good. Look into those when you can. For now you can dabble with fielding little 3-ogre units (often referred to as Ogre darts) to fill a similar role. Mostly redirecting opponents and generally getting in the way.

-People often field a big unit of Ironguts. These things will wreck anything they get into contact to. Field them in big enough numbers to survive until they can bring the pain. Usually your lords/heroes go in here.

-At higher point values you'll really want a BSB (Battle standard bearer). I would use your tyrant as a stand in for this.

-The rest is sort of up to taste. Maneaters are good for an early game threat. Mournfang can be absolutely devastating on a charge. Leadbelchers can wreak havoc on the right foes from range.

-Giants seem universally unfavored. Gorgers can be fantastic at pinning down war-machines. I've never had enough gnoblars to field in a gigantic unit, but they can be used as a pretty good tarpit.

-Consider using your firebelly as a stand-in for a butcher. Then you can dabble with other lores of magic on your slaughtermaster (at least one wizard in our army NEEDS to use Lore of the Great Maw).

Hope that points you in the right direction.
Regards
Thanks for your reply!

I have a couple more questions based off of your advice.

-I can use my Slaughtermaster as my general correct? He would take the Lore of the Great Maw and I would probably upgrade him to level 4.

-So, I should toss my BSB (Tyrant) and Slaughtermaster in the Irongut unit and the Firebelly in with an Ogre unit?

-Would it be unwise to put the Firebelly in the Irongut unit as well?

Also, I'll have to read up further on the ambusher rules in order to understand how to use the Gorger. That's the only reason I suggested that I wouldn't field him.

The good news is that only about 1/3 of the army is painted and ready to go, so there will be plenty of time for me to research and understand all the intricacies.
Welcome to the hobby.  I too have just put an initial investment into OK, but I have been playing fantasy for almost 20 years.

Here are some thoughts.  Gorger ambushers aren't bad, you just don't get any use out of them for atleast three turns.  But, they can still be good.  Make sure you opponent has to think about them every turn.  "Don't forget about the gorger".  The threat is almost as good as the action.

As for sabertusks.  I am using 3 OOP cold one models from the lizard men or dark elf line.  They are plastic and when painted up properl,y make very convincing sabertusks.

Experiment with different character looks.  It is hard to anticipate what you like until you start playing and getting used to what they do.

Keep your starting lists simple with no complex shenanigans.  This way you can learn the basics without developing any crutches or bad habits.

Good hunting!
Welcome aboard sailor.  ;)

Good bunch of models you have there.  Start a gnoblog, pick a theme, take in game what you think is cool and adjust every few games from there.  Don't automatically be drawn to the internet wisdom and the typical net list that follows on.

Thanks, Jimmy!

Once I get home this weekend and can unbox and inspect my models a theme will be the first thing I decide on. I won't lie, the whole meta of Fantasy is a bit overwhelming at first. But the more I read and watch, the more I grasp. I've contacted the GW store in Atlanta, and they've informed me that they have games every Saturday. While I'm taking the time to paint, I plan on making a couple of 20 mile trips to soak in some sweet sweet wargaming action.

If anyone reads this that happens to be in the NW Atlanta metro area and know of some shops to catch some games, please let me know!
