Question about cover

original thread ↗

I've searched for a while but can't seem to find an answer to my question. I have a unit of maneaters with scout and sniper for taking out generals and stuff. This weekend I was playing a friend that has a war shrine with his general on it. It's a Large target but was behind a unit of greatswords. The question is does he get cover from that unit or not being a large target? In other words does a unit count as an "obstacle". He wasn't sure either so we said it would which made me have to hit on 5s instead of 4s so I went after another target instead. Thoughts or a reference would be helpful. Thanks!
Obstacles are a specific category of terrain.  From memory it's basically fences, walls, defensive stakes, that sort of thing.  So provided the unit covers 50% or more of the model, he'll gain cover.

Ok thanks
Large targets cannot claim cover bonuses. I don't have a rulebook to hand to reference the page for you at the minute though. It will either be under Large Targets or somewhere under cover modifiers. I'll check for it later.
When's dinner?

I have just looked at the ruling for Large Targets and they are not allowed cover modifiers for obstacles, it then references pg 122 for what obstacles are. So they are still allowed to get cover modifiers for other terrain including units as they aren't obstacles

Also if they were covering 50% of the model you would be hitting on 6's as units count as hard cover (-2 to hit).

OB
Ah OK sorry, hadn't realised it was specifically "obstacles" that they can't hide behind.

Ok I guess that's true they are not an obstacle by definition so he gets cover.  Just seemed screw that he's on a large target and can give inspiring presences a greater distance because everyone can see him yet my snipers can't because of a unit infront. Oh well RaW I guess
Pretty much.  Large target or not, if he's over half covered by the unit he gets cover (keep in mind if the unit does not cover half of the model, which I don't think they should be tall enough to do) you're good to fire at will with no penalty

So your looking at the model in its entirety, not just the width of it's base. So for example a screen of Gnoblars stretched across the front of a Thundertusk would certainly not grant it cover, despite screening the entire width of the TT base?
When's dinner?
Yes that is correct. However you do not include things like wings, tails and banners and things like that
