Wrong time to start an OK army?

I was thinking about getting into warhammer and liked the look of the OK.  However then I found some talk about how come in May 2015 that the rules are going to revised in a rather dramatic fashion (with some factions being removed/miniatures being redone).  I am wondering whether it is worth waiting until then before making the plunge and buying new miniatures, rules etc for them to go out of date within 3 months?

First off, nothing is certain and all rumours throughout history have always been blown out of proportion

The rest is rather subjective, it depends on your playgroup. If they dont like 9th, will they stay with 8th?
Is your wallet willing to take the financial risk?

I've played against Daemons with round bases, It doesn't change how you move or measure.. You can still rank them in custom movement trays.. So that wont really matter either way..
Ogres will still be around.. whether or not a random rumor or  pic indicates that High King Thorgrim Grudgebearer Hired the whole(or part) of the Ogre kingdoms to take back a few Dwarven Thaigs from the skaven means very little at this point..

It's always an amazing time to start an Ogre army.  Ogres are fantastic fat sods with a complete disregard for the faces of other races. If you like pushing little men forwards and watching them beat things to a pulp, then the time is right to play Ogres.

My worry is that I drop several hundred dollars on the army, spend a long time painting it up and then find that the models are unusable when the game system changes.  There are some rumors that appear to be somewhat nasty (in terms of the the number of races being reduced down to 6 etc).

Don't know how to verify how reliable all his sources are.  Do rumors of this nature (in terms of massive changes to the game) occur every time a new edition it touted?

You can't verify the sources I'm afraid. Keep in mind that rumours are never 100% accurate, and almost always over-exaggerate whatever's happening. Plus people seize hold of bad news, and it gains a snowball effect with very little to substantiate the doom and gloom.

Just a flip through the Warseer thread shows how folk love bad news. The rage over "bubble hammer" "bubble marines" "armies being squatted to make 6 new factions" "all models redundant" needs to be taken with an unhealthy dose of salt. Besides, when did GW last release a new edition, with a COMPLETE range of new army books? Most likely armies will be quite a bit behind the curve before they get a new book, and therefore new models which replace the old. It could be years before an 8th Ed army gets updated to 9th. Just ask Brett's and Beastmen.

I too have only just started ogres and when I heard some of these rumours I started to reconsider. But then I thought screw it, nobody knows for sure what's going to happen. 9th maybe a disaster but then it maybe awesome, its too early to say. Plus its an excellent time to snap up a second hand bargain as people panic and sell up.

If you want to play it safe then simply wait a few months.  If the rumours turn out to be true then people will be sellling lots of models on the cheap allowing you to either get into the hobby and play the current or last edition or make the call and not bother.

I am kind of in the same boat as you.  I like the army type and style, but feel that I am coming late to a party that is just winding down.  A pity really.

As they have said, no one knows for sure, what is going to happen (but is this a lie we tell ourselves to stop us from fearing that our investments may become worthless?).

To be sure, there is fear in the marketplace.  And, with fear comes panic selling.  So you might be able to outfit yourself with a decent army at good cost.

I am lucky that my gaming group is not doing the End Times yet, and may not go into 9th edition if all of their investments get nerfed too.  So there may be an unconscious decision within our group to just stay in 8th edition.  Heck, personally, I like 6th edition best (but that just goes to show my tenure in this game).

I just finished about 5000 pts of dark elves and am very tired of painting them.  Am am looking forward to painting the Ogres.

For me, I have collected about 3500 pts and will call it a day at that amount.  This gives me enough variety to play different styles without collecting and painting up too much.  Plus painting 3500 pts of ogres is not exactly like painting 3500 pts of elves.

Even if the worst of the rumors are true, you could just run the OK book with 9th ed rules.  I heard that we were being lumped together with the Empire, along with Dwarfs and Brets.  Who knows, maybe we can still run an all Ogre army in the new rules?

As long as that is still possible I'll be ok with the changes.

I am hoping the change is basically to make a few huge super books that really have 3-4 factions in them that can be run together as a single army if desired, but can be their own.

Ogres better not be relegated to being rare and special choices in an Empire/Dwarf book though.

If combined books is the way they are going, I'm hoping that they do some sort of themed approach to them. For example, you need a certain points spend/troop choices in your core or a particular Lord/Hero choice to allow access to certain special or rare.

That way you wouldn't be able to fill your boots with Empire core, then take Ogre specials and Dwarf rares and completely cherry pick from anything in the book. You would need to follow certain criteria to build an army, which would just about keep each army intact, allow competitive themed list, and still allow for some combination lists.

Indeed. That actually would make a lot of sense for GW if they want to cut down on the number of books.

1) It doesn't cost much to put extra pages into a book, so they lose nothing by just copypasting everything into 1 book.

2) It doesn't invalidate any of their existing products, which means they don't lose out on future purchases of particular kits.

3) You make less overall books, but you sell more of each book. Empire, Dwarf, and Ogre players will all be buying a single book. And be incentivized to purchase the other armies in that book.

I'm not looking forward to $120 army books though.

Ogres are a fantastic army to jump into. With a low model count and probably the best battalion box you can buy you can't go wrong. In regards to the rumors everything is hearsay. As stated by other folks its not to worry about. Don't fall in line with the doomers and gloomers. I'm bored of arguing with the folks on Warseer about the round bases because its baseless (pardon the pun). I don't see round bases happening at all. But till things are settled with certainty enjoy the army, you won't regret it.

I just started an Ogre army.  I definitely don't regret it.  I'm enjoying the experience of painting them and look forward further still to getting some games in.

Worried about 9th?  Don't be - your 8th edition army book (should) still be valid in much the same way as the current Brettonian book is.
