The Jungle Eaters (Ironblaster - now with MOAR GUN )

The Jungle Eaters:

Ungmaw Mawseeker had long been wracked by unclear visions and gibberish exclamations, which none of the tribe’s butchers could understand. It was clear that his strange visions were of great importance, for he spoke of an all-consuming, toothed rope. In his visions, it moved like a flowing river, yet was armoured like a Cathayan pikeman. It was longer by far than it was tall or wide, but when it opened it’s great mouth, it seemed as if there was no end to what it could consume. These visions troubled the tribe greatly, not least because having an insane Tyrant leads to a poor life expectancy. It was with the return of Mallowgal, a maneater, that these visions were put into place. When he was asked if he knew what the Tyrants visions were, he answered “it’s just a bloody snake, ‘an it sounds like a big one!”.

Hello, people of the stronghold! I'm a long-time player, who has recently come back to the hobby. Thought I'd share some of my hobby love with you, if you'll have me! I started an army based on Lustrian ogres almost immediately after the book was out. While this army certainly isn't original any more, I hope you guys will take some of the same pleasure in this gnoblog as I have taken in making it! Coming back to the hobby, two of my wishes had been fulfilled, plastic carnosaurs and "rhinox" riders, along with some new, stranger toys. I'll be posting some of my older models to start with, as well as some of the new stuff I'm currently working on.


So, with no further ado, the bulls of the Jungle Eaters!

Hey guys! Here's some of my leadbelchers, and some more of my ironblaster-by-the-way-of-bastiladon!

Leadbelcher! I actually made these under the old book. They were terrible then, so these guys are all I have.



This guy is pretty basic, but I guess it explains why he can't shoot straight!



Salamanderman! One of my first "major" conversions. I'd do it a little differently today.



Another standard guy, this time with a gnoblar. Not a great picture though.



Fire up those skinks! I like this guy, a simple, small cannon with a simple, small cannonball. Leadbelchers and torches are a must as well.

Dragging a cannon so large you could use dwarfs as cannonballs all the way to Lustria had been a challenge. Taming a bastiladon to carry it had been harder still. The leadbelchers were no beast-tamers, and the bastiladon was not one to care for simple taming. The massive beast didn't even notice the clubs trying to break it in. Craggor even broke his favorite club on the beasts armoured shell. No other beast would carry the massive cannon, so it had to be it. Stegadons were simply too sensitive to the terrifying noise and smoke released by the colossal cannon. It wasn't until the gnoblars swarmed over the scaled hide that a solution was found. By hammering the armoured skull, the monster would react with violence towards all vibrations that reached its brain. Using a lighter touch, a single gnoblar could goad the bastiladon in one direction or the other, and so the beast was tamed.

It's more or less finished now, just a few touchups!

A little detail on the "driver". The arms aren't pretty, but they do the job.

I just got feeling that on normal ogres and ledbelchers also is to much jungle stuff... But thats my personal opinion. Anyway good stuff man!

I love the Bastilidon Blaster!
I was going to 2nd the thought that there was too much jungle, but as a unit I think it looks good. Perhaps you need to have a few of the models intereacting with the jungle pieces. i.e. pushing branches back, cutting a path with a machete etc.

Thanks I had to redo the ironblaster a couple of times before I got to a design that worked, and now I'm pretty pleased. As for the jungle, it has to look like an actual jungle! It does drown the miniatures a little, but I feel like a lot of bases nowadays end at ankle-height. If they're marching through the jungle, there's plant everywhere. I would do it more elegantly if I redid them though.

Thanks a lot! I like the ideas. If I ever get some solid terrain, I might just do that. All of these jungle things are plastic aquarium stuff, so I either have to superglue the entire plant or just leave them as-is.

I'll try to get a character up today. They generally aren't as converted, but there's a touch or two.

Now for one of my favorites!

Easy to see in his great orange coat, Craggscar carries the Jungle Eaters massive banner into battle. This banner is a shoddily constructed thing, every bit of it stolen from defeated enemies, but inspires immense pride in every ogre. His calm demeanor is a remnant of his maneater past, and he prefers their company to that of the other tribesmen. It is rare to see anything phase this bruiser, and he instils a degree of the same attitude into any who see the banner flying. That, or the knowledge of the Tyrants favoured bruiser being nearby keeps them in line. Might is right, even amongst the Jungle Eaters, and Craggscar maintains the rule of law with a investigative mind and a great big club. Where most bruisers would seek to restore order by punching as many ogres in the face as a single swing will permit, Craggscar has been noted to do something as odd as “ask first, crush into a gory paste later”. This occasionally leads to rumours of meekness, but such rumours are repeatedly bashed in the head whenever he bellows out his catchphrase “I am the law”.

He's got a mighty big banner!



I guess the lighting could be better. Might want to work on that. As you can see, he's based on the paymaster maneater, and is surprisingly stable for such a huge guy!



The arm is a rat ogre arm. I needed a beefy arm and some massive hands. Lifting that pole really builds muscle strength...



I BSB without a lookout-gnoblar? Preposterous!



Here's a closeup on the full banner. It's all bits I had lying around, and the only overt evidence of the tribe's stints in the old world.



Just in case you needed a size comparison. This dude is massive. Sometimes I feel that I should get extra range on the banners effects.

Awesome banner and really cool ironblaster. The blaster will be very fun to paint I imagine, can't wait to see it.

It's not about being easy, it's about how much of the jungle can stand against a bruiser intent on bringing a humongeous banner



So, after playtesting a firebelly, I decided that I needed to sculpt me one! Made this from wednesday 'til now. Hes gone a bit more native than most of my ogres :p

Side view. The fire was a nightmare to sculpt, and I'm not entirely pleased. But you've got to stop somewhere. This is also by far the most greenstuff intensive thing I've done so far!



It's the symbol of Chotek, the Lizardmen sun god. Don't really expect anyone to notice, but it as fun adding that little extra.

You guys liked the Ironblaster, and now I've got the bastiladon painted up. Surprisingly fun to paint model, and GW's recent plastics are amazing. I remember putting together stuff like the old carnosaur, and what a nightmare even that guy was. Anyways, more pics! Tell me if I overdo it

Here she/he/it is! I wanted a simple scheme so that all attention would go to the cannon.



A more detailed view. Here you can see both the detailing on the edges, and how the stomach/skin looks. Nothing too fancy really. Lots of drybrushing.



Isn't that just the most adorable smile? Really pleased with how it turned out. Not that anyone will notice, given how low to the ground these guys are.

The Ironblaster is about 85% done! Just all the niddly fiddly parts.
