What is needed in a balanced army

original thread ↗

So i asked myself this question recently and started brainstorming and came up with the following and would like to know if i have missed anything

So What is needed in a balanced army

  • Magic defense
  • Rank and File killer
  • Character Killing
  • Monster Killing
  • 1+ Armour Killing
  • Chaff
  • Chaff clearing
  • Mobile Units
  • Ranged threat
  • Combat hammers
  • Resilence
  • Anchor
  • Warmachine clearance
  • Sacrificial Unit
  • Magical attacks
  • Flaming Attacks

Edit: I am adding a second list of stuff your army needs to be able to deal with rather than what your list needs to include

  • A way to deal with large units (i.e. hordes)
  • A way to deal with small units (i.e. smirkmishers)
  • A way to deal with deadly units (Monsters, blenders, etc)
  • A way to endure magic

I am sure i am missing stuff
Samurai Ogres of Nippon

Counter-Magic.

Plus, any one or two of these can be skipped, so long as you have a plan in place to deal with the gap in capabilities.  The ideal is to have things that will take care of multiple requirements, of course.  An example being our Iron Blasters; they fill both roles of counter-monster and counter-war machine.

Thank you completely over looked that, even though i never leave home without a dispel scroll

You are right you will never have a unit per point especially with Ogres. And Multi role units are crucial. A Firebelly covers a couple of those points very nicely
Samurai Ogres of Nippon

A way to deal with large units (i.e. hordes)
A way to deal with small units (i.e. smirkmishers)
A way to deal with deadly units (Monsters, blenders, etc)
A way to endure magic

and at least one backup plan in case your initial means of handling those things falls apart.
I'd add an anchor to your list there, something that's stubborn or steadfast. A unit you can put in harm's way and know it's not going anywhere, come what may.

Mobile units (particularly sacrificial ones), ranged threat, combat hammers, and resilience.  The armies that do the best tend to have all four of those bases covered, which is one of the reasons Elves (and DoC) are so dominant.

An all comers list should also have something to deal with ethereal units, a few chars with a magic weapon or ruby ring would do.
Updated the first list and created a second one. I think there is enough of a difference between what areas your troops should cover and what you should be able to deal with

A simple plan, and understanding what ever unit in your army role, weakness, and strength.  Then again this can be said for every army.
