Newbie Ogre Army - what to build

original thread ↗

I'm just getting back into Warhammer after a long break (about 15 years), and have decided that after scouring all my old models, Ogres are the way to go! Just after some advice on what to build when I get all the bits, as I may have gone an bought a load of stuff without thinking it through in my eagerness to get started again...

I've currently got;

6 x Ogre Bulls - Ironfists and full command - no sprues left
2 x Mournfang Cavalry - Still in the box
1 x OLD Battalion Box - Still in the box
1 x Thundertusk - Still in the box
1 x Ironblaster - Still in the box
1 x Firebelly - Still in the box

So what should I build out of this lot??

I'm thinking of doing a couple of Maneaters with Brace of Pistols from the Mournfangs, and maybe using the banner to make a BSB from one of the other bodies somehow, but I'm completely at a loss with all the reading I've done recently..

I usually play casually up to around 2000 points, so looking for something fun, not that competitive, but I'd like a few options to field if I could

Any ideas???
Ok this is what I would do:

Batalion: make the Ironguts into Ironguts, Ogres into AHW Ogres and Leadbelchers into Leadbelchers.  When you are making any army you just need the majority of the front models to represent what the unit has.  So with the extra bodies with either GW, AHW or Ironfists you can flesh your units out to give them some variety.

Mournfang: build 2 regular Mournfang, 1 Musician and 1 Standard.  All with Ironfists. Use the GW bits for conversions to make more Ironguts from the batalion box.

Make an Ironblaster.

As for ManEaters your on the right track about making some of the regular bulls into ManEaters.  Just use the command bits mainly the heads to make them all stand out above regular Ogres.

1 thing you absolutely need is a BSB so convert one up.

As far as the Thundertusk/ Stonehorn kit, id do a Stonehorn personally. I preffer the way it looks and its rules.

Good luck

I just want to say take that part with a pinch of salt. It will depend on your gaming group as some will play WYSIWYG. I would personally make the Ogres with Ironfists
Samurai Ogres of Nippon

So, keep the 6 Ogre Bulls I have, and use the 4 spare bodies in the battalion to build 3 Maneaters and maybe a Bruiser / BSB?

Or use the 4 bodies to make a horde of Bulls?
I would make 1 BSB and 3 normal Ogres personally. Then purchase a Firebelly/Butcher
Samurai Ogres of Nippon

Id take the ironfists over the AHW personally. No benefit for 2nd rankers (max 3 supporting attacks) so only the front rank gain. Ogres dont have many guys in a rank typically. The extra armour point and parry save are more beneficial imo.

Everything else I agree with, TT or SH is just down to your play style and preference. I believe the Stonehorn generally gets more use from what Ive seen of others lists on here.
When's dinner?

I have played in various gaming groups, local one day tournaments and GT's.  I have yet to have anyone call me on this.  I am not talking about 3 Ironguts and 9 Ogres behind them.  Im talking about a 8/2 split or 10/3.  And honestly if someone cried to me about not having every model WYSIWYG id probably point them over to the 40k tables and not play them.  I think it adds variety to how the unit looks.

Not wanting to play someone because they might not have all the models they need, or want to test before they buy, or font have the immediate funds to drop 600 $ on an army is messed up in my book.
Regardless, front rank wysiwyg is generally considered good etiquette so that your opponent doesn't forget what stuff is. Try to remind them often too, so as to not have them make some rather inconvenient mistakes.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?

Mournfang: build 2 regular Mournfang, 1 Musician and 1 Standard.  All with Ironfists. Use the GW bits for conversions to make more Ironguts from the batalion box.

I wouldnt have a musician and standard if I just had 2 Mournfang. The musician dies first and if the standard fails the panic test it is removed! If you have a unit of 2 you either need no command at all or champ and standard I'd say
He said he had 2 boxes of Mournfang which is why I suggested 1 std, 1 musician, and 2 regular
Ahh I read that as one box, so just the 2 Mournfang, my apologies
Just the 2 Mournfang at the moment - but I've got my eye on another box already....

Started working out all the bodies last few nights, as well as building up my Leadbelchers to start with, thanks for all the advice guys - going to try and get the first 1000 points built and painted in the next week or so and get playing :D

On an unrelated note - my 10 year old has decided to go 40k Space Marines, does anyone know of a suitable support group I can go to?
Imperial Guard?
