How many Gorgers could a Slaughterer Gorge if a Skrag list took some Gorgers?

original thread ↗

Evenin' all,

Apologies for the silly title, but I was here to ask the eternal question:

How many Gorgers for Skrag? I will be running him in a 2400 point tourney, with some rather serious comping going on. So only 1 Ironblaster, but I get a plus point for running Skrag.

The comp seems to heavily favour MSU Ogres for some reason, so I'm thinking of running a couple of 6 strong Irongut blocks, and 2 units of 2 Mournfang. Obligatory level 2 with scroll (another -1 to comp) and a BSB too.

The comp really hurts a lot of our conventional setups though, so I'm also debating an Undeath Firebelly and a unit or two of Leadbelchers.

The comp rules are here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9LJUgA9z29KQkdWZXZqZWFnNEU/view?pli=1

So if anyone sees any interesting ideas, shout out! I'm also having to work out what kinds of lists I'll be seeing from other armies too - the 'second best' armies, as it were. So I'm bouncing around ideas a lot at the moment. I do want to run Skrag however!

It says in scrags rules that u ignore the duplicate choice restriction on Gorgers, also, you can take two to a unit, I had a nice 2000 match and it was glorious with just 3 Gorgers....

Well, lessee here...

2400 points means 1200 points allotted for Special choices... Gorgers are 90 points apiece, so...

13 Gorgers. All in separate packs (no doubles, makes them less mobile and gives no added benefits that a double charge brings).

at 1170 points, it would be quite fun, and fluffy. Just add a unit of Ironguts to give Skrag a place to hang out in, and maybe some Ironblasters; you could even still take 1 Sabretusk and be within the 50% limit! :P

Just imagine the look on your opponent's face after you get your first kill with Skrag. The swarm gathers...

Personally I'd take around 6 lone Gorgers which gives some breathing room for MFC or Maneaters and of course those ever precious Sabretusks.
After a quick scroll through the comp pack I threw this list together:

Skrag
BSB
Flyerbelly
Hunter

8 Ironguts, FC, banner of swiftness

8 Ogres, FC, IF

6 Gorgers

10 Sabretusks

2 single sabretusks

You get positive comp points for skrag, the flyerbelly, the hunter, and the sabretusk pack. Two blocks of 8+ MI prevent negative comp points from the characters, and there are no other negatives. The lack of ranged damage is a concern to me, but with everyone running full tilt into combat it should be manageable.

Hmm, I don't think I could give up an Ironblaster. I'm also very wary of the 10 Sabretusk pack since even with a Hunter I'm not seeing it perform too well...

I'm contemplating Leadbelchers over the Sabretusks however. And possibly swapping out the Bulls for more Ironguts (I'm not sure if I'll NEED Bulls, which is the thing).

Genuinely never thought of the Hunter though! I'll have to consider how to use the guy. Some sort of lone unit running around flanks, perhaps....

A hunter with one lone sabre, vanguarded up on a flank. Hunter with shield of Ptolos to get rid of some nasty shooting. Give him a magic weapon and you have yourself a nice fast cruisemissle...
If you search the site for "hunter" you will turn up several good threads on hunter tactics and loadouts.

I would go with more gorgers, but as mentioned above... NEVER PUT YOUR GORGERS IN UNITS OF 2!!!!!!  They are harder to maneuver, but most importantly, wounds will carry from shooting if 1 dies.  If they have a unit of 30 DE crossbows and they put in 10 wounds because of poison or something, than it would transfer to the second if they were grouped.  If they aren't grouped, 6 wounds wasted.  :D  And since gorgers are ItP, they don't need to worry about panic or anything like that.  There is literally NO benefit to running 2 gorgers as 1 unit.

I used to run a Skrag list for events like Ard Boyz with gorgers. I had as many as 8 in one list... that was nutty.

I found 4 to be a good number. 6 might be nice too. Of course this was before the OK special choices were as good.

I was just concerned with having them survive a single round of combat - a unit of two could hold up something much longer. Me course, there's not much difference between them and two units of one actually, good point!

I'm also liking the lone tusk with Hunter, though am debating cramming in a hex scroll wizard of some kind. But I did also want to test out an undeath flyerbelly too (me and the lore of fire don't get on)... And technically I don't lose points for taking a dispel scroll... Gah! Choices!

That is true that 2 can stand longer, but think about it.  If you charge 2 separate gorgers, they will have to divide attacks just the same as dividing shots.  wounds would not carry over to the next gorger.  Just make the charge with 2 different units and you have a better result.

Two separate units are also more survivable against shooting for the same reasons
Even for charging and stand and shoot reactions only 1 of your gorgers will take shoots if they are seperate.  There's very little reason not to have them seperate.
