Stomping mad

original thread ↗

Got home from a match tonight and remembered I forgot to stomp. I didn't crush a single elf underfoot! Does anyone have any good tips or tricks to remembering impact hits and stomps?
Stomp markers are a good help.  Just putting down an icon of a foot at the start of each combat, and remembering to take it away at the end.

Or just have a good opponent who'll remind you.

A tattoo on the back of your dice-rolling hand helps, too :P

I just committed it to memory, just like the rules. Also, just keep playing, it'll become more natural as you play Ogres more. If need be, though, make a note-sheet that has a quick list of all your units and their special stuff, and then put "Stomp Attack" as one of the notes; that way, when you read through your notes, you'll remember it more easily. But, again, the more you play, the more it'll sink in eventually.

New book WLD: 21/11/3 - Got trounced by one of the "Khaine" elf armies... Stupid new rules...

Its mostly a matter of habit - remind yourself of each check/phase even in combat when it matters - given ogres almost always swing last, you can also sometimes just throw them in with your normal hits (assuming no great weapons) or do them before you swing just to get them out of the way.

Same thing with fear checks, I tend to say 'fear check' at the start of every combat, often followed by 'oh wait, immune to pysch' or 'also causes fear, nevermind'.

I'll second the markers. I have a whole set of markers I made (just empty bases with "stomp", "fear" and "impact hits" on them). When I started playing ogres I'd put them behind my units in the hope I'd remember. I still forgot a lot. Eventually I got it off pat and now it's pretty routine.

You just need to get into the habit of running through the combat steps in the right order. You can always print yourself off a list and try and remember to refer to it in every combat. Useful for any army but especially ogres.

1) Fear tests
2) Make ways
3) Impact Hits
4) Issue challenges
5) Normal attacks
6) Stomps & great weapons. (Remember these are simultaneous!)

I'll second the fear check thing. I always forget them, as I mainly play my brothers fear causing, immune to psychology Vampire Counts army. I have to really make a point of reminding myself my ogres cause fear. I usually only remember when I'm meant to take a fear test and realise I don't actually need too....
When's dinner?
I always tend to forget due to my usual opponent playing cavalry heavy armies.  On the rare occasion that there is an infantry block, by the time I get into combat with them, I've completely forgotten that I have stomps after plowing through the innumerable horsey units.
lots of good advice here - thank you! I think I'll try some markers and see how that impacts my memory.

Make Way....then Impacts?
I thought impacts then make way

Nope, read the section on make way, specifically says before impacts hits, Means you can get your firebelly up there for a possible flaming impact hit:)
Yep, the order isn't all in one place but if you look up each rule the rulebook is actually unambiguous about the order.
When i played vampires i always forgot my stupidity test. So i put a large cardboard sign in front of me that said "dont forget stupidity!"

Roc, your math is correct, but bereft of tactical considerations

yep that sums how i play =)
Heh, I would have written "Don't forget stupidity, stupid!"

See, I got over this after yelling 'FEAR TEST' became a running joke for my Tomb King friend, who would occasionally declare it even when it didn't matter, like with my ogres and against another friend's Daemons.... Really drilled it into our heads!
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
