Finding Games

original thread ↗

I've been having trouble finding WHFB players. There used to be more at my local club but these days it seems like Warmahordes has taken over and there are only a few Warhammer Fantasy players left.  I am still hopeful that we will have the Fantasy Campaign  that I enjoyed the last two years, and maybe that will bring some of the veterans back. However that is starting to seem less likely with GW games on the wane.

First off if any one wants to play a game in Boston, MA, let me know!

How do you find games in your area? It is possible I need to network more and start driving to sotres in other parts of New England. That's tricky with me as I have two young kids, but it could work every now and then. Maybe I should be reading up on tournaments more, so I can get a bunch of games at once every 6 months or so. Is there a good site you know of that lists all the tournaments geographically?

I'm a little frustrated, I love planning my list and working on my tribe, but more games would make it a lot more interesting :). I get an X-Wing game sometimes which I enjoy, but it is just not the same when the models come pre-painted.
This seems to be happening the world over. GW  inability to balance the game and the newest army allways being the flavor of the month along with their 9 year waits between books gets ppl pissed off. where as warmachine releases add ons for every race periodicaly it is a less investment to start up and less of a job to maintain and your units dont get irrelivant between books. i hear you man i love the warhammer universe but i hate the company behind this sometime back in the day they sold out and thats what is killing them now. i heard from a press ganger that the best thing to happen to warmachine was the release of 8th edition. and now with the additional titants and flyers in 40k they are reqruiting from that camp too. GW needs to change their practises the yearly price hike the delays between books the new stuff is the best stuff all this makes them unfavorable in an envirioment with competition and now they have that. RANT ENDS.
Yes - I have some of the same thoughts. But I wasn't so much trying to rant as get advice on how to play games in this new world. There are a lot fewer 40k players as well. I fled 40K myself, except I fled to Fantasy :).

I don't really want to play Warmahordes - the settings are not nearly as appealing to me as the GW settings. WHFB maybe an amalgamation of established Fantasy stories (Tolkein, King Arthur, D&D, etc )but that is kind of what makes it awesome.

Anyway, any advice on getting more game in?
Well, you can always try Universal Battle. I haven't done it myself, but it's an online version of the tabletop game. I think there's a small community here in the Stronghold that play on there. I'd say it'd not be a bad way to get a game in, if you're willing to fuss around with the small details of setting up the list and figuring out how it works ;)

Other than that, you could always try to set up a small "gaming club" using your nearest hobby shop as a beacon to other players. Basically, make some signs, post to Craigslist or some other "yellow-pages"-esque website, and then ask permission of your local hobby shop owner if you could post a sign or two; then, just set up a time and a place, offer free beer (:P), and you're good to go! Hopefully...

Or, worse comes to worse, you could always just start a second army and play games against yourself... But, I find that to be rather boring, personally :P

I live on the opposite coast, otherwise I'd totally try to come over and play a game or two! :P

And last note, if you want to drive 7 1/2 hours west into Canada, Miniwargaming.com is just over the border in Ontario, and they're a pretty awesome company to doing games and stuff :P
37 Gnobs! Almost on my 4th Pack of Trappers! Exciting
Gibblet, Nibblet, Crunchybit, Snorti, Lullzee, Wakezee (source unknown, named since I'm getting pet gnobs again lol) and Wardler (for the 2++regen/2++fireward discussion)!

New book WLD: 21/11/3 - Got trounced by one of the "Khaine" elf armies... Stupid new rules...

sorry about the rant. i just get so angry and i also had so much coffee.
Thanks, Sazel. I would love pit the the Slaughterstone Awakening agains EverBruise one day. I actually am in a gaming club that meets as a store, it might be that I should volunteer to do some more out reach and try to fine some WHFB players out there to come by and play.He club has been around for years and relies on word of mouth, it might be good to market the club a bit more.

I can't see playing on the computer, the whole beauty of the game is that it is NOT on a computer :).

I've got a game of X-Wing planned for later this evening so there's that at least! I will just imagine my TIE Defenders are piloted by man eaters. Hey... Star Wars man-eaters.... there might be something to that.

Ha, I approve! :P

I'm in exactly the same boat. I enjoyed 40K for its run, but eventually 5th edition burned me. I turned to fantasy because I love Ogres and Fantasy rules appealed to me more.

I have no interest in warmachine or it's sibling games; the models look tacky and the small portion of the fluff I know is... I have even harsher feelings towards Infinity. GW has burned all it's consumer base, and honestly I'm thinking that if more people converted models and played Necromunda... It would be a fun intermission from the mainstream GW games and if it took off as a trend it might catch GW's attention enough to make updates upon Necromunda.

But that might be a bit too optimistic.
