Hi guys

I like the look of Hunters and Gorgers for my Ogre kingdoms army, but I would like a little more information on how to use them. I would rather use the Hunter on foot. I just wanted a bit of tactical information. I would like to use the Hunter and Gorgers in a 2k army with a Slaughtermaster in it.

I can think of three ways to run a foot hunter, there are probably others.
On a flying carpet. Doesn't allow for much protection but it is a T5 flying nuisance. I think you get better mileage out of a flying firebelly, there is a topic about the "flyerbelly" that will give you all kinds of good info on that strategy.
With a sabretusk sidecar. Hunter is deployed with a single sabretusk, they vanguard, the hunter splits and does the back field/flanking thing while the sabretusk goes about it's chaff duties. Someone won a major GT this year with a list featuring a hunter used like this, but I can't recall which one. Crossroads maybe?
As a combat unit. Hunter goes in a big pack of sabretusks and takes advantage of vanguard and swiftstride to zoom around the field. I've tried it in a game or two and like most ogre units they lack in the durability department but with the right matchups they absolutely smash face.
Gorgers tend to perform better the more of them you have. I've not used them myself with the new book but having two or three increases the odds you will get them to show up soon enough to do any good.
Alternatively take skragg and a core unit or two and a pile of gorgers. Nothing quite like rolling to see if ten gorgers are going to make an appearance.
Hunters and gorgers are considered sub-optimal choices, but they both have their uses. Take them if you like them, but points get tight really fast at 2K and it can be difficult to make it all fit in without making compromises.

Gorgers are great to block warmachine and other shooting from high priority targets.
I used to run a solo Hunter near my Giant and some Leadies on a flank - makes folks have to put priority on something and they typically can't kill it all.

I bring a solitary Gorger every time I have a game. I tend to play against Elves, and I've found that forcing them to deal with the Gorger is great for the rest of my units. If he doesn't become magic missile/arrow-bait, he's not shabby at all vs T3 elves- he's even killing blow'd a mage for me! I bring a Thundertusk, and I find that my Gorger sometimes forces them to bring squishy units closer to its sphere of icy stone throwing. Hopefully that makes sense. Plus the ambush factor is good for psyching some opponents out (at least for the first couple of games, haha.)
I also bring a Hunter with 1-2 Sabretusks for the vanguard. He's expensive, but quick. I've had mixed results with him (often he ends up as pricey chaff) but he's great at clearing VC Spirit Hosts with a cheap sword. I've had him hunt war machines once or twice, too. Good or no, he's fun to use, and I recommend giving it a shot.
To Mega Therion.

The Side-Car Hunter is far-and-away the most effective way to run a hunter. Give him the shield of ptolos (or whatever the 1+ save vs shooting shield is called) and a Hunter becomes the absolute bane of any kind of Elf (especially woodies). Alternatively, the Trickster's Helm or just the flat-out talisman of Preservation works wonders. IMO a Side-Car hunter is our best non-ranged war machine hunter (pun

), and is still reasonably cheap.

Do Wood Elves really have trouble with the shield of Ptolos? Waywatchers will completely ignore it.

Waywatchers ignore the armor, but that is only 10 str 3 shots. They are wounding on 6s.
The hunter is safe enough, and if they are shooting the hunter with waywatchers, they aren't shooting mournfang.

Plus the Hunter has vanguarded up in their face. Heck, keep the kitty in the side car and you have a hunter with swift-stride, making him that much more of a threat. The kitty is protected by shot randomization, and is still wounded on a 5+.
Besides, someone has to shoot at him once to find out that he's a 1+ armor (and seriously, when do Ogres have a 1+?). Against light armor and shield, most WE players will opt to double-tap the first time.

Don't forget the Silversteel Armour too. It's better than the Talisman of Preservation in certain scenarios for many heroes.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
