Smokeeye tribe and other rusty painting skills

original thread ↗

Welcome to the smokeeye camp!
This is partly to motivate myself to paint more, as I’m currently suffering from the far too many models and not enough painting syndrome, as well as having returned to Warhammer after 14 years of hiatus. Well that and far too much study related work. The other part is of course to get some critique on my work and hopefully improve on it as I go along.
Now my tribe is of own creation, and in order to stick to the fluff behind it, very light on Ironguts but heavy on the cavalry aspect due to the very nomadic life they live.

**FLUFF**
The smokeeye Tribe were not always known as that, however due to an unfortunate "accident" (Bergolg calls it an attempt on his life by a challenger) with an ancient leadbelcher gun, that destroyed much of the Irongut regiment and left Bergolg with a permanent blackened face. They renamed the tribe after the now cloudy right eye of Bergolg. Bergolg himself has never forgotten about the incident and to this day swears revenge on the ogre who traded him the gun. However, the accident left him unable to remember who it was or if it indeed was an ogre. Therefore, they attack anything in their path, while they search for the perpetrator.

The same accident is the reason the tribe to this day only have a handful of Ironguts, Bergolg doesn't trust anyone enough to rebuild the once proud unit. The tribe have instead specialised in heavy cavalry, which is better suited to their nomadic life. They prefer to do a thunderous charge with a flank of mournfangs and rhinox, supported by the monsters the hunters have managed to prod in the direction of the enemy. After the initial clash of furclad somewhat deranged beasts of burden, they march straight into the enemy and smash whatever is left standing to a bloody pulp. It’s not the most subtle of tactics but it does serve them well and tends to leave nothing but broken bodies in their wake.

Currently they’re engaged in a series of running battles against the forces of Chaos, as Bergolg has announced that he believes the person responsible for his shame is hiding somewhere in the Chaos Wastes. The rest of the tribe does not dispute this, even if they find it somewhat unlikely, as they love a good fight more than anything else and the northerners are more than willing to give them just that. Therefore, they’re contend with smashing whole tribes of marauders and other things that live in the cold north in their tyrants search.
**END OF FLUFF**

Now with the introduction out of the way, what am I working on? And what’s actually finished?

To answer the last question first:

10 Ogres including a command group are completely done along with 2 Mournfangs.

What I’m working on currently:

A half-finished Ironblaster that has been taunting me for the past 3 months and the small unit of Ironguts the tribe have left.

The rest of the to do list is far too long to list I’m afraid, but I’ll add more as I get to it and hopefully get some pictures of the finished units, and the whole army when it gets to that point.

Pictures!

Hi mate a big welcome to the gnoblog community.
Models are looking great really like the mournfang and the bases keep up good work looking forward to seeing more

dtk  :D
Welcome to the gnoblogs section! Hopefully we can provide you with some motivation haha!

It looks fantastic and great pics.

The wip's look tantalising. Once they're done you will have a great force for the battlefield!

I am almost there with my ironblaster as well. Man that thing takes for ever. Looks like a great start. Have you built Bergolg himself?
I got a standard tyrant to represent him for now, along with far too many other things that also needs painting. In the long run, once I got most of the rust beaten off my painting skills (and figure out this magical green stuff), I'm planning on making a more unique model to represent him in games. The Ironblaster is coming along nicely as well, definitely not my best work, but it'll do for now.

Also thanks for the welcome, I'll see about adding some updated pictures later this week, as I seem to have quite a bit of spare time. So hopefully some painting will happen.
I would say stay focused on a few models at a time.... but that would be very hypocritical of me, lol.

That's exactly what I'm doing to keep my sanity intact. The actual to do list looks something like this:

1 Tyrant
1 BSB (homemade, I'll get a picture of him later)
2 Slaughtermasters/butchers
1 Firebelly
13 Bulls
6 Ironguts (as shown in the first post)
2 Mournfang Cavalry
2 Gorgers
6 (homemade) Maneaters
4 Leadbelchers (I have another 4 that's been painting, they could do with a repaint though, the skin is horribly messed up)
3 Rhinox Riders
2 (including the one shown above) Ironblasters
1 Scraplauncher
1 Stonehorn
1 Thundertusk

And far too many gnoblars to count, the buggers seems to multiply when you're looking the other way.
Small but pictureless update:

The Ironblaster is mostly painted, there's some metal bits that still needs painting, but it is a bit more presentable. However the blasted thing failed me again in a game tonight. In an even more impressive display of uselessness, it blew up on its very first shot and then a 1 was rolled.

I've been having some really bad luck with my cannons, usually they either blow up or fail to hit anything at all. Interestingly, in the same game, the other IB first misfired and couldn't fire that and the next turn and when it got to fire again it hit nothing what so ever, with the shot falling an inch or so short of the target.

I think I need to rethink how I use those things, if I use them at all.
Aw man awesome work. I love the paint jobs on the mournfang especially and all the basing is excellent! I'll be painting up my mournfang soon did you have any useful resources to use as I've never painted anything like them before?

I mostly used the ones in the ogre book as inspiration, especially for the 3 coloured one. Other than that, maybe have a look at what big fur covered oxen type animals look like. Like bisons and musk oxes. Or just come up with something you think will look cool. Usually that's the best solution I find.
So the weekend is done with as is the 10k vs 10k battle.

The short version is that the Ogres and Beastmen beat the cowardly rats and greenskins into submission and feasted upon their remains. It was however a close call at times with their quite frankly silly amount of warmachines and shooting being a royal pain in the rear. What I think finally turned the tide to our advantage was my 2 Ironblasters turning 13 boar boyz into a smear on the ground with 2 grapeshots totalling 18 hits and 17 wounds on them, along with a Hellheart detonation in the middle of a group of wizards.

A note on the HH as it was my first use of it in a game. That thing is downright brutal and frankly doesn't belong in most games, I can see a reason to bring it to a high stake tournament but other than that I don't think I'll ever be using it again. It blew up a Greyseer, caused a goblin shaman to go into a feedback loop so all of their remaining wizards took a strength 6 hit and lost them most if not all of their power dice.

A funny - to me at least - note was the amount of time and resources they devoted to my 3 units of 10 Gnoblars with trapper. They took fire from catapults, spells bows and then a few extra warmachines for good measure. 3 Gnoblars kept 50 Black Orcs at bay for 3 turns. They just flatout refused to even consider charging through them and just accept the losses, so they could get to the horde of Bestigors behind them. My partner and I spend a fair amount of time laughing about it and a bit more time being stunning by just how much they devoted to killing them (and failing).

Things I took away from that game:
Mournfang cav = very good if they get to charge. They turned a unit of Savage Orcs into paste on the charge. Think a third of the unit died to the oversized and rather angry pigs.

Doomdivers = massive pain for ogres

Warplightning Cannons = just as big a pain, unless they blow up

Goblins with Spider Banner and the poison attack spell from Skaven hurts a lot, they killed off poor wuffles (stonehorn) with only poison hits.

Now I just need to find some time to paint some more ogres.

Something else I've been tinkering with, a pet project if you will, is a Khorne warband for Warriors of Chaos. I'd appreciate a bit of feedback on my current version of the list:

Daemon Prince of Khorne 425 pts
Chaos armour
Collar of Khorne
Flaming Breath
Daemonic Flight
Sword of Swift Slaying

Exalted Hero of Khorne 223 pts
Battle Standard Bearer
Burning Body
Poisonous Slime
Dragonbane Gem
Enchanted Shield
Sword of Strife

24 Chaos Warriors 520 pts
Full Command
Halberds + shields
Banner of Eternal Flame

24 Chaos Warriors 525 pts
Full Command
Halberds + shields
Standard of Discipline

10 Chosen of Khorne 315 pts
Full Command
Halberds + shields
War Banner

15 Chaos Knights 755 pts
Full Command
Enscrolled Weapons
Wailing Banner

3 Skullcrushers 234 pts
Enscrolled Weapons

Nothing of it has been bought so it's very much subject to change, but I came across the Daemon Prince of Khorne on Forge World the other day and I'm ashamed to say it's one of those things I'm very definitely going to end up buying, it's a wonderful model and the perfect center for a chaos warband.
